My wife and I were building a flagstone patio in the back yard, and had essentially no idea what we were doing. We already had the flagstone in the back yard given to us by a friend, but we needed the gravel and sand for the base. I added up how much gravel and sand I was going to need, and started shopping around. It was going to be over $600.00 to purchase individual bags of sand and gravel at Lowes or Home Depot, and those are individual 0.5 Cu. Ft. bags. That's almost 200 bags at 40 pounds each.
(That's about 4 tons...)
I had no idea how I was going to get it home. I don't own a pickup, and my SUV was going to take 15 trips or more to get it all home. Plus, I'd kill myself lifting all of those bags in and out of the car. I really needed to get it in bulk and get it delivered.
I started calling around to sand and gravel companies in the area, and no one wanted to deliver such a "small" amount to a residential neighborhood. They wanted almost as much as Lowes after the charge for the material and the extra charge for a small load. Then I spotted Blanco Sand & Gravel's listing in Google maps, as the owner lives not far from me - and I called. He had no website, no facebook listing, no email - I was skeptical.
Todd White (the owner), was extremely helpful. I told him what we were doing, and what I thought we needed, and he actually suggested an entirely different product. Rather than using 4" of gravel and 2" of sand, he suggested I do the entire 6" base in what he called, "manufactured gravel" - which is crushed limestone. He said that as the pieces are small, but very angular as opposed to rounded, it would provide both a good solid base, and also help to lock in the flagstone without easy blowing out from in between the stones as sand would.
Todd almost sounded embarassed when he told me that he'd have to charge a small extra fee because he had to go to a supplier on the other side of Dallas to get it, but even with that - the total charge for 3 Yards of material (7800 pounds), was going to be only $225.00, delivered to my driveway.
At 9:00AM the next morning, there was big dump truck rumbling down the street. The delivery driver backed up to a tarp I laid out in the driveway, and dumped it right there. I don't think he was here 10 minutes. BAM - simple. Done! And LESS than HALF the cost of what it would have cost me at Lowes, and I didn't lift a finger.
Todd White at Blanco Sand & Gravel answered all of my questions, spotted that I needed some help deciding what to get, made honest suggestions based on his own experience, gave me a more than fair price, and delivered it the next day. Absolutely highly recommended for whatever project you're doing.
