I am a 62 year old widow who can be very naive at times. I think Gayla and Diane realized this and took advantage of me. Before giving me a bid on the work, Gayla wanted to know the amount of money I was prepared to spend. I told her. I paid half of the money before the renovation started. On June 6th Gayla wanted the rest of the money. She wanted the money before she took a vacation to Hawaii. I paid her the money, but she lost my check. I had to cancel the check for over $10,000. Afterwords I decided not to give her all the money until the work was finished. On another occasion she wanted me to pay an additional $1000. I had already paid her $15000, and I refused to pay her any more until the work was done. During the renovation, I felt like I had to fight with Gayla to have things done right. Three of her contractors pointed out to me below quality work that I would have never noticed on my own. The tile workers walked through my house with muddy boots and made my carpet look worse. Gayla would call to say someone was coming, and the worker would not show up. On Aug. 22th 2008, Gayla and Diane came to my house to collect the rest of the money. I told them that I was very disappointed in the work and no longer trusted them. They made no response to my comment. I had asked to see the receipts for the work done. According to them I owed an additional $1323.44. I know that I had some additional work done, but I was also supposed to have been given credit for some things that were not done right. Gayla showed me a receipt for a bathroom fan, but everything else was presented to me on a spread sheet that she made up. She told me that she did everything on computer and didn't have actual receipts for any of the work or materials. On Sept. 9th, I submitted a complaint to BBB. Diane responded that I wasn't "right" and needed meds. She also accused me of verbally abusing the workers. I never did anything like that. I hold Gayla and Diane responsible for the poor quality of the work, not the workers. I think they hired workers without the skills required to do the work properly.
Description of Work: On May 23, 2008, I signed a contract with Urban Decor (Gayla Nakamura) to renovate my bathrooms. After 3 months of mishaps, I made the final payment to Diane Hissam and Gayla Nakamura on Aug 22th. The quality of the tile work is very poor. The shower has 2 different colors of grout. The grout between the tile is different widths, and the tile by the shower drain is jagged. The shower door does not line up with the side panel. I can't put a water glass on the marble counters because it will leave a ring that I can't get off. The toilet paper holder has fallen off the wall. The wall behind one of the toilets has never been painted. The tub hardware was intended for sinks, and it takes a long time for the tub to fill. The workers did not even replace all the screws in the light switches.

Response from URBAN DECOR
I am very sorry that this member is unhappy with her remodel that Gayla Nakamura contracted with her on. I would never want a client of mine to be unhappy. Her designer, my ex-business partner, Gayla, left Urban Decor immediately after the bathroom remodels were finished. I, Diane Hissam, had no control over this project; it was solely Gayla's. She hired and had all control over her own sub-contractors for the entirety of the remodel. I was with Gayla at her final meeting with the member to go over the final payment and credits issued to her. I wanted to be there so that I knew that if there were any issues, I would be on board and be able to work with Gayla to resolve the issue or issues immediately. While we were there, we all looked at the work done and commented on how beautiful it turned out. She never complained about anything or pointed out any issues. At that time, she should have said something so that any issue could have been taken care of. Instead, she looked at the final detailed bill and made the final payment, agreeing that everything was done to her expectations. She did request to me through email, shortly after Gayla left the company, to tighten a loose toilet paper holder and paint behind a toilet. At this time, Gayla would have resolved the issues but she chose to ignore my email that I sent her which stated that I was willing to work with Gayla to resolve the issues. She never mentioned the other issues to me that were listed in her complaint to Angie's list. In the email that she sent to me requesting to fix the toilet paper holder and paint behind the toilet she stated "I know Gayla now works for Garner and Associates. I am going to report her to BBB. I'd like to know her business address. I had it, but lost it when I deleted her emails. I don't want to report Urban Decor because I don't think that you are responsible." In this statement, she admits that myself/Urban Decor are not responsible and yet she is falsely reporting me. She was unhappy with me that I was unable to supply her with Gayla's new business address, so she seeks revenge in an ill mannered way. However, I am still willing to resolve issues for her as I was before.
