Jay did some of the preliminary work - permits, etc. and I did some.  My insurance company and my mortgage company were both troublesome to deal with and he worked with me on that.  Draws didn't come in a timely matter, requests were ignored from both providers, and that was a problem getting subs paid.  As I said, his subs were all top notch except one - and that was the framer.  His work was good, but his attitude was terrible.  I complained and things were straightened out.  I had to have some septic system work done outside of the builder and at the very end we found out that the septic pump was not where it was supposed to be in relation to the slab and house so the expense of fixing this would have been mine.  Jay paid it (and it was over $2,000) and had it inspected. 
The house had to be situated  differently on the lot to accommodate the different shape.  It took an architect to do the drawing along with a lot of planning.  I picked up some of that expense and that was credited to the final cost. 
He is highly ethical and has been a builder in this area for 29 years.  I still call him with questions and find that he stands behind his product and doesn't "blow me off"
