Wansley techs installed a new HVAC system for a two floor house measuring approximately 3200 square feet in the fall of 2009. The house was greenbuilt and was eventually certified five stars by Austin's greenbuilding program. It has been over three years since the installation and I now have the ability to fairly assess the good and bad parts about Wansley's installation. First the good:
1. Price.
Wansley's bid was quite competitive. I required installation of an American Standard Heritage 16 heat pump system, along with an air cleaner (the allergy kit) and an Energy Recovery Ventilator. Their bid wasn't the lowest, but it was toward the lower end of the four bids I received.
2. Professionalism.
Getting somebody on the phone was generally not a problem, although one could see that their techs were not necessarily familiar with the details of how to perform such an installation.
Now the bad:
1. Lack of basic knowledge.
A certified HVAC technician should know how to install dampers within ducting and should
also know when and where by-pass dampers are required. Proper by-pass dampers were not installed.
2. Incompetence
The American Standard Heritage 16 is a two-stage heat pump. Wansley's techs never installed the wiring for the second stage. As a consequence the system never cooled correctly and used more energy than necessary.
3. Failure to follow instructions.
I specified R-8 flex ducts for the entire installation. This was mostly done. But when installing the ERV, Wansley's installers used R-6 ducting instead.
4. Poor quality installation.
Because this was a greenbuilt house, an energy auditor came in and performed a duct blaster test to determine the amount of leakage in the ducts Wansley installed. In order to pass the City of Austin's greenbuilding standard, there can be no greater than 10% duct leakage. My first result was over twice that. Wansley eventually fixed the problem and paid for the new energy audit, but that should not have been necessary.
Overall I cannot recommend this company for HVAC work. As for refrigeration, I cannot speak to that.
