During contract negotiations he led me to believe he had a quality professional crew he regularly worked with that would work on my site. Most of the time what he actually delivered were people he just hired from Craig's List the following day. I had people showing up in flip flops. When people didn't show up for the day (it occurred on seven occasions) Dan would say "It's a misfire and another person will come tomorrow". Dan's reasoning for this was simple, since this wasn’t a big contract he couldn’t get the same people consistently. He should not sell what he doesn't have. He should have monitored their progress more closely to insure proper quality and install techniques were being used.
My biggest a-ha moment about Paragon Homes came early on in the project. When Dan came by to receive his second check we walked the site and I said there was no insulation above the converted garage. He said he didn't have that in the contract as it wasn’t standard practice to put insulation in the attic. He said I could put in a Change Order and he would have it installed at my cost. I couldn't believe he a supposed general contractor for 23 years would say insulation was not standard practice in the attic. So I had to put the insulation and radiant barrier in myself over the weekend.
For my money I received warped and poorly hung sheetrock, cracked tile, discolored and ruined grout(Dan did that himself). He and his wife actually tried to say the grout was fine and was installed properly. I had to call TileLab (who owns the sealant that he applied improperly), Home Depot, Lowes and Ace Hardware to verify the proper way to do it then convince Dan he was wrong. He took a week to say he would fix it, but his crew was of course a no show. This was 11 days past the contract with two minor changes costing 4 days. He was paid in full for the entire project.
I now have a house that has a floor that needs repair(if not replacement), an outer wall with no brick, a doorway without siding and the contract was twelve days past the contract deadline.
So if you are looking for a high cost, low quality, slow moving workforce then I guess you could use them. I wouldn't!!
"I have just found this posting by the customer and am very surprised by the comments and description of our work that she posts. The project went past the scheduled time because they doubled the original amount of work after we started the project. We provide a scope of work with each project that details the materials to be used and the work to be done. As an example, after a whirlpool tub was installed and the marble top installed around it, the customer decided that she wanted a larger tub. Most tubs have a 3-4 week lead time to order, but we were able to find one that met her criteria within a few days and had the marble cut again to fit. This is one example of many where she changed the project scope after we had started and agreed to it. Regarding the timeliness of our management, we were there throughout the day and night, Monday thru Sunday in an effort to do the project as quickly as possible. All the while we were there, care to their furnishings and cleaning up, was of the upmost importance. We did protect all the furniture with plastic covers and we did roll up rugs, etc. The type of work that was done was extremely dust creating. We vacuumed and dusted daily. Yes, there was a leak that happened one day around 5pm, but it was a drip from a water line under a sink that was contained very quickly. We had missed the customers that day before they came home and had gone to another meeting when they called about it. Dan responded promptly by going over to correct the drip. At not time was their home left unlocked. We secured the property at all times and took care of their home as if it were ours. Again, I am puzzeled to the passionate listing here in Angie's list and we care a great deal about what our customer think and feel about our work. We have never in the history of doing remodel's been faced with a response such as this. In my opinion, I believe the customer added more to the remodel than she expected and when faced with having to pay for it, she got mad and made us the problem. We got along great with the customers to the point where they invited us to go for dinner with them on Congress. We had a wonderful time with them and got along great. At the time, we thought we'd continue the friendship long after the project. We went out with them for dinner about half way thru the project. I think it's also important to note that I went beyond our normal working relationship by giving Danielle my builder's discount for many things to help her get the look she wanted at a lower cost. For instance, all the tile and lighting she paid for were at builder's cost. I also spent about 5-6 days shopping with her for material selections, not to mention many days on my own trying to find just the right tile for her etc The project ended with what I'm sure she would agree to as a beautilful remodel and quality work. Unfortunately the break-outs of charges were something the customer didn't want to pay and that's where we became the bad guys. This is my impression of what happened at the the customers' and I am very sorry that she has felt the need to write what she did. I don't think it was a fair interpretation of the events. She had never had a home remodeled before. She's a very clean person and I think the process was overwhelming for her. After all was said and done, I reached out to the customer to see if we could mend the friendship, but she was unresponsive."
