That was NOT My Universal Movers.
They were scheduled to come at 10 am. At 9:30 they called and said due to technical difficulties with a truck from the night before, they couldn?t make it until 12 or 1 pm.
We had lined up a half-dozen friends/family to help us on the front and back end, disassembling beds and tables and such at the old house, then unpacking at the new house. Based on our move time, we got commitments for the time period from 8 am until noon. And now the Universal crew won?t even arrive until after our helpers are gone.
At 1 they called and said it would be 3 or 3:30, which then got moved to 6 pm. They finally arrived to load the van EIGHT HOURS AFTER THE SCHEDULED START TIME! Our helpers had been gone for six hours.
They arrived in an unmarked white moving van with scratches and gashes down the sides. The right front headlight was held on with plastic wrap. The front of the truck above the cab was open, meaning air would blow in as they drove.
They did a quick walkthrough, pointing out that they couldn?t load any unsealed boxes, and then waived the $10 stair charge on each end as a concession for our inconvenience (being 8 hours late).
Although they said they had plenty of blankets, they didn?t wrap anything before loading it. They took frequent smoke brakes out by the truck. They were less careful and at the same time slower than the company we used the week before. When we asked if they knew how to get to the new house, they said they would follow us, evidently not prepared to find the place in the event we got separated.
Because of them being 8 hours late, they had to unload in the dark and of course the truck had no interior lights. Because they had brought no lights themselves, we had to provide them with a lantern so they could see into their own truck to unload.
Obviously in a hurry to be gone, they stuck boxes willy nilly into the most convenient room, not according to how it was labeled. When it came time to settle the bill, they claimed a start time of 30 minutes earlier than the actual time in an attempt to add another hour, but backed down when we pointed out the real start time.
Now it was after 9 pm and we were exhausted, but had to assemble our bed before we could go to sleep, and then face the next day of unpacking without the help we had lined up specifically for that purpose.
As an added bonus, the next day discovered the implications of the blow-through truck. Our furniture, which had been uncovered during the drive, was coated with grit and grime. Drawers had dirt, twigs and leaves in them. Everything had to be fully wiped down before we could use it.
In the gift that keeps on giving, four days later when we were waiting in the house and got a call from the service person from his truck to find out why we weren't home for a scheduled appointment, we discovered that they somehow broke the doorbell during the move, knocking the faceplate off and replacing it without saying anything. We discovered it because it was replaced upside down.
We can?t imagine a more unprofessional, painful experience. We will definitely NOT use them the next time we move.
