again because I was completely blown away by the quality of service and
the desire to deliver a quality product. I can't say enough about how
much I appreciate Derek and his team for his open honesty, his
integrity, and his persistence in checking to be sure that all is well. They were considerate of where they placed their supplies before starting the job and cleaned completely when it was done. He has earned every penny I've paid him on all three jobs!
On roofing day, today, the crew showed up promptly at 7am and began to work. They were fast and efficient. The entire job, 21 squares plus 4 replaced decking sheets and the radiant barrier, took only about 5 hours. They also did work on my neighbor's roof (Derek had noticed some problems while inspecting my roof and went to talk with him about it that same evening). When done with both, the roofing crew cleaned up the entire site, including sweeping the lawn with a magnet for fallen nails and blowing clean the walkways. Derek even had them leave a partial bundle of leftover shingles in my storage shed for future use, if needed. Derek came by when his crew finished my roof to go over the final inspection. Everything was well-done. He came by again later this afternoon after his crew was done with the other roof to check on the clean-up. The crew did a wonderful job in from start to finish.
I am deeply impressed by Derek's professionalism, expertise and knowledge of the insurance claims process. Had I not called Masada Roofing, I have no doubt that I would have had to pay for all of the repairs and just accept the initial denial of my claim. Derek was courteous and diligent throughout the last week or so, since I first called him. He usually answered the phone, when I called with a question, and returned every call promptly on the very rare occasions when he was not able to answer immediately. I can't say the same about any other contractor I have ever encountered. Derek Foley and Masada Roofing, Inc. are definitely a cut above the rest.
"Thank you for taking the time to review Masada Roofing! It was a pleasure to serve you."
They came out, very friendly, seemed very knowledgeable. We walked over the roof and looked at the problem areas. He found some minor repairs that he could do while up there, added some screws to the skylight and used a bit of sealant. I then said we would like to talk about the porch extension of the roofline... He said that was beyond what they do and he couldn't help us with that at all. Great, so out $150 for some screws and sealant and I am going to have to have someone else out anyway!
I wasn't very happy about that but as he was leaving he told me he would have the flat roof repair estimate to me in "a few days". Two weeks later I had heard nothing for my $150 estimate that was only half of what I had discussed over the phone. I called and was told Derek was out and I needed to wait until the next day. Called the next day and was told that I was calling too much and that since they had been out they had gotten a ton of calls. Great, but shouldn't you take care of your existing customers first? Finally got the estimate. It was high but professional with samples of the material and a detailed breakdown. Unfortunately I am not going to do a repair on a roof that I might replace completely if we ad a porch... which is why I wanted both estimates.
So, feel like I paid $150 to have someone put a couple screws in my skylight and add some sealant to a vent.
"We appreciate the homeowner taking the time to share her frustration, giving us the opportunity to respond. Although perceived as just a few screws and sealant, I fixed a leak that was of immediate concern for the homeowner. Once she explained exactly what she was wanting in the porch addition I advised that it was outside the scope of services we could provide at this time but I would give her an estimate on repairing the flat roof as requested. - Derek Foley, Owner"
We agreed on all the particulars of the contract, signed, and he scheduled the materials to be delivered. Because of the low pitch and load-bearing capability of the house, he had the bales of shingles stacked on the ground next to the house, not on the roof. It rained the next two days, so his guys showed up on Thursday and by Friday were done.
This was the first time we had an insurance check made out to us and the mortgage company. There was some confusion about who was supposed to endorse the check first, and Derek was patient and worked with us the mortgate company to get that all ironed out.
Derek proposed taking the insurance estimate to remove and reinstall 14 plastic roof vents and use it to install full patches and ridge vents. We did and the house temperature seems to be more controllable. We also didn't have to remove and reinstall the rain gutters, so we used some of the insurance money to have the reflective sheeting installed and to have additional sealant sheeting installed we the edge of the house meets the cover to the back porch.
All-in-all, I am very pleased with the experience and the work of Masada.

"Thank you Member for taking the time to review us. It was a pleasure to work with you and we appreciate your business."
However as time wore on during that almost-a-year time period the relationship I had with the owner digressed. Part of the issue was that I grew quite tired of the attempts to sell me various products and/or services. And his occasionally gruff demeanor during our communication certainly didn't help the situation. The latter appeared most notably when I needed an updated estimate to submit to my attorney during the legal battle with the insurance company, as he didn't want to provide it to me unless I guaranteed him that I would give their company the business. I told him that if he didn't get me an updated estimate that I would have to find a new roofing contractor because my attorney couldn't proceed with the negotiations until a new estimate was submitted, and so he relented, begrudgingly. In ways I had to "work with" the owner (to put it politely) to get what I wanted/needed done for my roof. I always felt like that should have just been a given, but it wasn't. Unfortunately. So many times I just felt like I was dealing with a used car salesman instead of a roofing contractor, and by the end that had become annoying. I never will forget the final review sheet: it was supposed to have been completed by me, but the owner filled it in, quite quickly I might add, while stating what he was doing in one long, continuous sentence! "Wha-?!", I thought to myself, but elected to just let it go ... I had a new roof and that was the primary concern. Don't sweat the small stuff, right? Yeah. Sheesh.
Now. Regarding the actual work performed, I must give Masada's crew the highest marks for effort, quality and their willingness to answer my questions/address the issues that I raised. They arrived at the agreed on start time and commenced work straight away. By mid-morning the previous roof had been removed and they were ready to begin installing the new one. By 4:30 or 5 they had finished. They cleaned the associated debris and to their credit, we walked around the house and a portion of the property as a whole to complete the cleanup. As a whole the work crew itself did a fantastic job, which I suppose is all that really matters. In a way. Kinda. Eh, whichever.
In the final analysis I think that if I could have just worked with the crew and not the owner, then I would give Masada an A+. As it is, I will have to go with a B+ or A-. And I give that because of the work crew. They have purportedly been together as a team for several years and it seemed to show: their work was outstanding.
"Member thank you for your in-depth review of your experience with our company. We appreciate your honest perspective in all areas of the process and work that we performed for you, as well as the time it took you to put your thoughts in writing. As the Office Manager and Marketing Personnel for our company, I have intimate inside knowledge of what was happening behind the scenes on our end during that year long process. I understand how stressful it must have been for you during your year-long ordeal with your insurance company and the lawsuit against them. During this year Derek provided you with the initial roof inspection; and when your insurance company denied your claim, he gave you professional counsel and advice on how you might want to proceed and which agencies to contact. He continued to encourage you in subsequent telephone conversations over the months...all at no charge. I know that Derek also did his best to respond to your calls and requests for help in a timely manner. I apologize for any pressure you may have felt to give us your business. We certainly don't want to gain someone's business by pressure, as there is no element of trust and loyalty developed that way. Our company was built on trust and customer referrals...we never even had to advertise for the first seven years we were in business. As a 25-year sales and sales management veteran, I have learned that a successful salesperson (and business owner) is one who is persistent in asking for the business. There is a fine line between being persistent and being pushy. I apologize if our approach came off as the latter, and continue to strive to make the whole experience with Masada Roofing one that you would then recommend us to your friends. I suspect that it wasn't so much Derek's asking for your business that was the problem as much as his tone and what most likely seemed, from your perspective, to be his pushiness or sense of urgency. Again, we hope you will accept our heartfelt apologies for crossing that fine line. We truly appreciate your time and honesty in reviewing Masada Roofing, Inc. and also for mentioning your pleasure with the work of our crew. We value our relationships with our crew and our clients and are constantly looking for ways to improve on both ends. - Diana Foley"
