"i did this member's job during the holiday season ... i had several members including this member ......because i was so backed up ..i hired on a couple of other painters in hopes of catching up. unfortunately it wasn't working out.. i kept looking in on this job and i saw what this member saw. i went and pulled my son chris off another job and he and i fixed everything... in the world of painting it is very hard to find good help and i'm still looking.. but since this member's job those painters have been let go and will not be hired again. i apologize for this incident... but i will always make it right. winston"

"i would like to thank this member for their positive report ... however i don't understand the not hiring me back part. i feel there must have been some confusion .. these members built this house from the ground up and it was a nightmare for them. a job that should have been completed between 3-5 months at most extended over a period of 2 years...twice their general contractors were fired..i came in and completed interior and exterior painting altho other painters were in and out..it was a mess but the final project was beautiful.. i enjoyed working for these members and would not hesitate to do so again. i truly believe that if a painting project comes up on their behalf .,... they will remember me best . winston"

Before I could even pick out the paints, they were helping me fit into their work schedule. Their crew was just amazing. Very knowledgeable and helpful. Mr Kirby gave suggestions and provided information when
needed. They were also good at working with my odd schedule. I never felt uncomfortable having them
at my house. It is definitely a family business and I felt like family had come over to help with the house.
(just not my family :) ) I have already asked them about another project and recommended them to a friend
at work.
"thank you for your positive report...it was a pleasure doing business with you thank you, regina"
Pricewise Mr. Kirby's bid was not the cheapest and was not the most expensive. Taking into account the man-hours spent on the project the price is very reasonable. We chose Mr. Kirby because of the Angie's list reputation, reasonable price and because he is a neighbor.
We chose to buy our own paint and at the start day we still have not decided on one color solution, debating between Option 1 and Option 2. We discussed that with Mr. Kirby and he suggested Option 3 that we liked.
Our challenges were that (1) we needed quickly repaint the whole house interior before we unpack the boxes to be ready for our baby to be born; (2) the doors and trims at our houses were oil-painted, therefore, we could not put latex over it but needed to put an oil and, because of the smell and kids in the house we needed to be out of house for several days; (3) I work from home (could not leave the house) and my family could not leave the house because it was too hot outside, so we and the crew had to "share" spaces while they were working; (4) my toddler needed her naps from 1 to 3.
For the challenge #2 we decided to try to put a hybrid paint over oil as it was expected the pain would stick over the latex. This way we would not have to leave the house. Unfortunately the paint did not stick over the latex and Mr. Kirby called the paint shop and had them take the paint back and issue us a refund. Because it meant that we needed to get out of the house during the oil-painting phase, Mr. Kirby was able to break the whole job in two parts (non-oil and oil). This allowed us to book a corporate apartment nearby at a reasonable price for 4 days that were needed for oil fumes to disappear.
The crew, Chris, Martine, Jose, were respectful to us and our property and were working quickly and efficiently with very good quality. We like the result. They were as least intrusive as possible (I hope that we did not drive the team crazy) and were able to accommodate my daughter's nap schedule by not doing loud work during that time.
It was pretty big and expensive project for us to undertake and all in all we glad that we hired Mr. Kirby. Thank you Mr. Kirby for helping us out.

"these members turned out to be really good people to work for. I would not hesitate to work for them again. thank you so much for your positive report. best, winston kirby"
Kirby Painting's bid was several thousand dollars less than those of regionally affiliated Carnival Painting and another nationally affiliated firm. We accepted the bid and were scheduled to start approximately four weeks later, on September 3; delays due to rainfall and to unexpected requirements and changes in earlier jobs meant that the actual start date was September 10. We were advised in timely manner of these delays.
At the job's start Kirby Painting provided a three-man crew; one of the painters was unable to come after the sixth day due to a family emergency. All painters were conscientious, careful, helpful and honest. They covered all furniture and left no spills or marks. Painting and repairs were of high quality. We were able to remain in the residence throughout the painting job.
The job had been estimated as requiring a single coat of paint and five work days; in fact, it became clear that a second coat was required throughout the house. The actual time required was twelve and a half workdays. There were no cost suprises due to the second coat, for we had earlier requested and received from Mr. Kirby a contingency estimate for that additional painting.
Mr. Kirby was professional, informative and gregarious throughout the process. Although the job caused much more of a disruption in our daily activities than we'd anticipated, we are very satisfied with the result. We commend Mr. Kirby and highly recommend his firm.
"these members were really great to work for. they were understanding and polite about every situation. they were a pleasure to work for and i would not hesistate to work for them again. it would be my pleasure. thank you for your positive report, winston kirby"
On the first day of the project, Mr Kirby explained that there would be no working supervisor, and, consequently only a 3 man crew, but that he would stand in for the missing supervisor. Mr Kirby, however, did not spend much time at the job supervising or in planning the job. At the end of the first day, I was informed that no bedrooms were available for occupancy and that I would need to find elsewhere to sleep. I ended by sleeping two nights on a camp cot in a bathroom not included in the project. Fortunately, my wife was out of town.
The three (3) person crew included two competent young men and one relative that frequently disappeared. However, on 3 days there were only one worker and the relative that showed up. In brief, the job was falling behind. Discussions with Mr Kirby led to promises that he would personally step in and paint and that he would get more painters that he knew. Mr Kirby painted 2 1/2 hours and left. The other painters never showed. It was clear that the job would not be finished as scheduled (not a problem for me) and that a Kirby job scheduled after my project was being threatened.
More problematic was the initial quality of painting. I found more than 30 areas in the first ceiling beams painted by the relative that needed rework. These areas included uneven filling and sanding where the popcorn had been removed, areas totally unpainted, and extremely uneven lines where two surfaces and colors met. I had to request Mr Kirby to come by and ensure that the painting was corrected.
It was corrected by the young workers to very high quality.
The coverings of all items in the house were removed before ceiling sanding was completed. Sanding continued for 2 days after the uncovering. Furniture in the rooms being sanded was recovered but not furniture or items elsewhere. Doors were open and dust covered the entire house including all fabric covered furniture. At this point I requested a meeting with Mr. Kirby and suggested that, if he could not provide on-site supervision, we terminate the project. He insisted that he would be on the site from 8 until 5 each day and that he would get additional workers from his office staff to clean items that were covered in dust. He did neither. His relative shop vacuumed and moped the floor leaving fabric furniture and a whole room of stored items untouched.
Mr Kirby left that day at 3pm, showed up the next day at 9:30 and left at 11:30 and failed to show up the next day at 8 as promised. A three man crew was here that day and he was on the phone with his relative discussing trim paints that had not been purchased when I left for an appointment. I refused to talk to Mr Kirby by phone and insisted that he live up to the commitments to be on site and supervise the project.
When I returned from my appointment, Mr Kirby had loaded all equipment and the paint and crew and was leaving the drive.
Had Mr Kirby left the paint and/or proposed some financial termination, I would have been less put out. Clearly, the two young workers Kirby employed were capable of quality and efficient work and, as regards to the painting that they accomplished, I am very satisfied. The absence of supervision and an incompetent crew member led to rework and needless cleaning expense (assuming the fabric can be cleaned) and, perhaps, legal expenses in the future. Broken commitments by Mr Kirby led to my mistrust of Mr Kirby.
I cannot recommend Kirby Painting.
"This member did not dismiss us..I loaded up and walked off the job. This member was extremely rude and was actually wanting to contract the job himself. This was causing problems because it was not allowing us to do the job effiecently and in the order that we know to do the job properly to complete it on time. When I tried to talk to him about this he claimed that we had no common sense. (more of his rudedness) when I asked him how so??? His example was so bizarre i'm not even going to go there. During the sanding, some dust escaped to the upper level. When we arrived the next morning the word shit had been written in the areas where the dust was. It was light dust and this was not necessary at all. All he had to do was just talk to me. And if he would have done what i asked him to do at the beggining of the job which was shut the a/c off this wouldn't have happened. He had a return vent down stairs that went to the upstairs. One of my crew members also told him about this and he still left the a/c on. But we went ahead and cleaned it up and even told this member that if he wasn't satisfied with our cleaning job that he could hire a maid service and I would pay the bill but nothing was good enough for this member and many times he used vulgarity and that's just not appropiate for any reason. And the final straw was him demanding that I be there from 8;00 to 5;00 every day . this is just not possible... I am there the biggest part of the time but sometimes I have to go do bids for other members but I always come back to the job. And unlike most contractors I only do one job at a time but he basically told me that other members would just have to wait but that's not his call to make and it was wrong for him to assume it was. I would like to point out that these are only a few of the things we had to endure. He made the work environment so uncomfortable and stressful and to the point that we couldn't complete the work. The morning I walked off the job I knew that we were running low on trim paint so I was going to home depot and benjamin moore in 8;00 am austin traffic so I called to get a number off one of the paint cans and when he found out it was me on the phone..he started yelling at the crew member I was talking to about me not being there at 8;00 am. my worker was trying to explain to him that I was picking up more paint but he kept yelling at him so I asked my worker to put the member on the phone so I could explain and he wouldn't even talk to me. I knew at this point that we just couldn't do this anymore. I blew off the paint and turned around and went straight to the job and told my crew to load up and let's go. He came out and gave us a few choice words of his intentions and went back into his house. Now I don't know what job he was on ..there was never one complaint about our work..only how we went about it. Now if he wanted to be the contractor and run the job , he should have told me This at the beginning and I would have politely let him know that I wasn't the guy for the job and as far as for leaving things uncovered...that just did not happen. At the contract signing this member's wife wanted to ask me some questions related to the job and he cut her off rudely telling her that this wasn't the appropiate time. This was red flag and I just missed it or perhaps it wasn't enough for me to judge by it at that time. But now I wish I would have , however this member still owes me out of the remaining balance but sometimes it just isn't worth it. and this is one of those times...... live and learn. winston kirby"
