Our AC system was working well and we were not having any problems. We were contacted by Hanks asking when they could set up a 'spring cleaning' appointment. The technician began 'working' and eventually our system broke down. Not only that, but the electrical system was damaged between the unit and our interior AC control. The technician kept 'trying different things' to see what the problem was. At the end of one day working and breaking our AC unit, he asked us not to tell his boss that he had used some of his own supplies to try to fix the problem, and that he would come back the next day - and would tell his boss that he had some kind of family emergency - in order to perpetuate the lies of trying to cover up that he destroyed our unit and our electrical system. We called several times asking the owner to contact us. He never returned our calls. We were told to wait another day since it was raining. We then decided that we did not want anyone from this company to return to our home or property. We contacted another company who is now fixing the problem that they caused. We need a lot of electrical work done and will like have to replace and pay for a new unit. The company has been informed of all of this every step of the way. We are asking for a full refund and will also ask for them to pay the total damages.

They never showed up. The service window was 1-5, and they didn't show up. I had even called at 4pm, just to ensure someone was coming. I was informed (tersely) that the window was until 5 pm. Its been severaI days, and they haven't even bothered to call me. Oh, I have a warranty through this company. Terrible service. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this company.

I have a rent house of which the heating went out the day before
Christmas. Spoke to Hank and he went right out, let me know the
problems, reasons, alternatives, costs, and it would be replaced in two
days. When he finished, I then had him look at another house, and with
the same fine service, keeping me abreast at all times we have caught
the problems before they became disasters.  Having been stung by old
reputable Heating and A/C businesses over the years that have sold out
to National business that still claim local knowledge, I wanted a local
business to do the work. I have a found one, and have contracted to set
up regular maintenance that is effective.  I highly recommend this fine

Response from Hank's Air Conditioning & Heating Service

"Hank's Service would like to point out that [member name removed] called our office to schedule repairs on her air conditioner. She didn't want to pay what Hank's would charge. This employee offered to do the work for her "on the side". It was reported to us that she choose not to do any repairs. She knew and participated with this employee to do work with him as an individual rather than through Hank's Service. Our company never received any payment for this residence. Unfortunately this particular employee, who was fired immediately choose to steal from our company and [member name removed] willingly participated with the plan. The ex-employee did not complete the work. He stole the new equipment from Hank's Service, and delivered it to her home. We became aware of this situation when the ex-employee never came back to her home to install the stolen equipment, and [member name removed] called our office to complain. Hank's offered to come complete the work, but we would charge her. Some how [member name removed] believed our company was at fault for her choices. Hank's Service is not at fault for these two individuals choices. It is unfortunate, and we offered to help her. She choose not to. She wanted Hank's to refund money she paid the ex employee, and to install the equipment. We are very sorry that [member name removed] was taken advantage of."

I had to cancel my first appointment at the last minute due to suddenly remembering a previous commitment .  They were very kind about rescheduling for the next day.  The technician called ahead of time and showed up promptly.  He immediately located the problem and had the factory part on hand, so replaced it immediately.  This obviously was a simple job but he knew exactly what to do and went right to work fixing the problem.  He also advised me to refrain from "slamming the dryer door" as that may have caused the problem with the switch.  I appreciated the advice and his service. I would consider the charge reasonable only because I have now come to expect that any time a repairman comes to the house and performs any kind of repair, the charge is going to be over $100.  I would definitely use this company again.

We started noticing a gas smell every time we turned on our oven. After a particularly strong smell, I became afraid of fire danger and checked Angie's List for repair services. I wanted someone to come out that day, and Hank's was able to do that. The repairman diagnosed the problem as the ignitor and gave me an estimate of the cost of replacing it. Because the range was over 10 yrs old, I wanted to think about whether to repair it or replace it for a few days. He told me I that the service call fee applied to repairs made within 30 days. I decided to go ahead with the repair, and it was done the same day I requested it. Very nice and professional service person and company.

Use this provider with caution. Apparently there have been reports on a Travis Heights newsgroup, although I haven't seen these. By coincidence, our heater/AC developed serious problems about one week after it was serviced by Hank's. We bought a new unit from them, with promises that all rebates (about $1,000) would be handled by the company. On the plus side, the installation went smoothly, and the installers were a nice bunch of guys. On the very big negative side, the company did nothing (so far) to honor the rebate promises. Worse, they didn't take care of the paperwork that we needed to do it ourselves. (The unit manufacturer just informed me that they can't give the rebate because Hank's never gave them the paperwork.) Phone calls about this issue don't get returned. When we do get someone on the phone, we're told things will be taken care of--but nothing happens. I've left more than one message for the owner: To date, never a call-back to ask questions, get details or otherwise resolve all this.. The problems are still unresolved more than a month later. It's possible that the company will eventually take care of things. We're preparing to file a dispute with our credit-card company, which is not something we do casually. We've also requested a refund of a pre-paid maintenance contract. So far, no word on this either.

Hank's was the company that had installed the central heating and air conditioning company in our house when it was occupied by the previous owner. So, I was not sure that I would continue using the company for my ongoing service and maintenance. But I have used them repeatedly since then and have been very pleased.

This company quoted me a price for a new HVAC unit that was $3000 over what I got the exact same unit for. They also tried to get me to sign on the dotted line that very day, before I had a chance to investigate whether their price was fair. When I said I couldn't do that because it constituted acceptance of a contract, the service person tried to convince me otherwise, even though it clearly states in writing under the line that I would have been bound if I had signed. These people seem shady and desperate.

Family of five...we NEED our clothes dryer working. It had died on Wednesday night during a large load. I called four repair companies Thursday AM (all with 'A' Angie's List ratings), but only Hank's could come out the same day. The Tech (Bernard) arrived as scheduled, diagnosed the problem, gave me an estimate, and replaced the part - all within an hour. He also (at no additional charge) disconnected the dryer's end-of-cycle buzzer which had disturbed our sleep for 15 years. What a relief!

My experience is that they provided decent servicing of the HVAC unit when it worked. But when the stakes were high and the HVAC unit no longer worked, they tried to bamboozle me out of my money and pressured me to spend WAY more than was warranted, assuring me all the while that everything was copacetic. Li'l lady, beware!

On Saturday, June 12, 2010, we received a phone call from Hank, the owner of Hank?s Service, Inc, telling us it is time to perform our annual spring-check of our air-conditioning system. Better late (June) than never, we supposed. The next day we noticed water running down the front of our house from the porch ceiling just above the front door. The air conditioning unit is in the attic, and the water was coming from the backup drain for the a/c. We returned Hank?s call to set up the appointment and were told that a technician would be coming to our house Monday morning. Hank himself showed up, and since we had not yet used our prepaid spring system checkup, he did that, and also said that he had cleaned out whatever was stopping up our primary drain line, and that if the secondary drain didn't stop dripping down the front of our house, to call him and he would come back and take care of it. He blamed it on the "high humidity," which we thought was strange, since Austin ALWAYS has high humidity in the summer. We have lived in this house for 15 years and this is the first time we?ve had an air conditioning system leak. The leak got much worse, flooding our front porch, so the next morning we called Hanks' Service to report that, and to ask that Hank or someone come out and take care of the problem as Hank had said he would. We were told that someone would stop by. No one did, despite repeated phone calls, and finally the office manager told us we were on the schedule for Wednesday morning. By nine A.M. Weds, June 16, no one had called us, so we called the office yet again and were told that we were definitely on the morning schedule. By 2PM no one had shown up or called, again despite repeated phone calls from us. Then around 3PM, a technician called to say that Hank had told him to call us and tell us that if he came over to do the "repair" he would charge us $159. We pointed out that Hank had committed to coming back to fix the problem, but the technician just said that's what he had been told to say. We told him that we were not going to pay that kind of money for a process that would probably take less than a half an hour. In retrospect, it seemed like he made the problem worse on purpose, just so he could return and collect money this time, over and above the bi-annual maintenance charge we paid him last year. Once we gave up on Hank?s, we called Delfino Torres of Del's Heating and A/C service around 3:30. He showed up when he said he would (exactly one hour later) and fixed the problem in less than ten minutes for less than half the charge that Hank had quoted. Del explained what the problem really was (major water leak from a secondary drain after the primary drain had clogged up, requiring a simple and fast blowout). Hank is clearly in need of money and we suspected from the very beginning of our follow-up phone calls that he wouldn't come back unless he could make more money from us, aside from the money already paid for his seasonal maintenance. He also gave us a really hard hustle to do something to the A/C system in our attic in January, 2010, that would have totaled over $700. Since he came across as a desperate con man, we decided that we would not use him again for any service, maintenance or otherwise. And we still haven?t needed to have the work done that he hustled us for back in January.

I have dealt with Hank's several times before, so I was not surprised when the visit went well. But I chose them as a result of consulting Angie's List comments on several similar service providers. I refer to the breakdown of a washing machine as a "domestic crisis". While waiting for the repair service to arrive I researched Consumer Reports for recommended brands, models, etc so I could compare repair cost vs replacement cost. This was NOT a good time for me to be spending a lot of money, so I was in a mind set to repair, even if it was kind of pricey. The service man arrived within about 20 minutes of the start of the estimated "window" of time. He got to the problem without fan fare, in record time as far as I was concerned. He was able to answer all my questions and never made me feel like I was bothering him or was in the way. As the consumer, you might expect that attitude would go without saying, but I had lots of experience in the past with a different kind of attitude. By giving me full information, he helped me make the decision to replace the machine, in spite of the cost. And the cost of the service call seemed most reasonable to me.

They came out several times as the air conditioning unit was not cooling enough because I did not let it go long enough for it to cool down. Despite that, they came out promptly whenever I called. The quality of their work was good and I was satisfied with their service.

Quick response ; called Monday ; got Tuesday appointment ; worked around our schedules ; 30 minute call ahead ; didn't have part but obtained part in 20 mins ; talked to "mom" to schedule in the morning ; talked to "pop" in the afternoon to ask about working around schedule. "Pop" was very friendly "mom" was a little gruff.
