Work went excellent. Karl came out within a couple days of us contacting him to go through what we had in mind for the remodeling effort. He listened patiently and even made some great suggestions. The work itself went very quickly; one of our major concerns was staying on cost, and H&H managed not only to stay within a cost ceiling but maintain schedule and quality.

It went very well.  The bid was competitive.  The team came (with agreement) to start the job sooner than planned and completed it as expected.  Very happy with the results - the counters and new tile back splash look great!

I had already purchased a new replacement Proline vent fan hood on the internet, and simply needed to replace the old vent fan hood with a better working model.  Proline had a new interesting model, with a much stronger venting capability, plus the older model had stopped working.  The replacement job took about an hour and a half, and everything went smoothly.  The new range hood works great!

We did have a little trouble communicating. There was an issue about a job, being so rural and out here. He had family problems. But at the end of it all, when it was all said and done he made good on his part. I wouldn't hire him again. Even if I tried, I don't think he would accept the job because he had no idea being so far out what that was going to mean for his company. It's a big chunk to come that far out. I have seen him in a grocery store, we're very friendly. We left on good terms. The job he said he would do, he did finally get done but we had issues. I have recently been widowed and I have 10 miniature dachshunds. I'm not young. So a lot of times I have to leave for funerals and I have to go overnight. I needed a room that was dog proof and climate controlled so that I'd know that they could get in and out and still be cared for while I was gone. So that's what he was building. When I first talked to him, he said, "Oh Yeah. We can do that. We can do that. We can do that." When it came time to order these things he was going, "I don't think you want to pay for that." So the quality of the materials deteriorated from my original view. He was forthcoming in all of his invoices and receipts and showed me. It was kind of misleading at the first, but I think I got what I paid for. What he did for me is working beautifully. It's just that it didn't quite work out well during the process, but at the end he made good on it. I didn't get what I envisioned but I got something functional. I think he could have done a better job doing the job.

A friend referred us to Hand H Design and Build and I cannot say enough good things. Our last experience with a contractor was awful so we were extremely hesitant to take the plunge again. What a night and day difference. The Hand H team team was very understanding and did a great job of communicating with us throughout the entire project. So thankful. Not a day went by that we didn't know what was going on. There were a few delays however we always knew in advance what caused the delay and when work would resume. Their quality of work and attention to detail is impeccable. I highly recommend H and H Design and Build.

Really well. Workers coped well with my annoying dogs. New paint, floors and master bath are beautiful. They will be coming back soon to do final stage including one more bathroom. Karl's a super-nice guy and totally trustworthy.

We were not pleased with him. It would take forever for him to come and start the job. He would just supposed to sit there every single day and wondering if somebody is going to show up. He didn't say, “Okay the painter is going to come this day.” On the work, the grouting is cracking. It looks terrible and he said he will fix it. We send them an email and also made bad reviews on Angie's List, that's the only time he showed up after a month or two. When he showed up, he doesn't have a wrench with him and said he would come back, but didn't come back.

Workers were prompt and very neat, cleaning up each day before leaving. Karl came by each day to check progress. It was a relatively small job, but Hand H has previously done major work to this house that was extremely well done. I recommend them without reservation.

Hand H gutted an old bathroom on the second floor of our 1940 house. This involved removing a very heavy cast iron tub and the original heavy tile which had been painted over numerous times. That alone was a big job, executed in a timely way with great care. They then installed a new tub/shower, retiled the shower area complete with a nifty inset shelf for shampoo. The tile work was especially well done. They put in new flooring, sink, toilet, medicine cabinet, lighting, and towel bars, and painted the walls and cabinetry (which was original). The job was done extremely well and, after 2 years, I am still quite pleased. Their sub-contractors were people they knew well and worked with often. The estimate they gave me ($6500) came extremely close to the final bill, except that I made several choices along the way that ran my costs up. I was completely aware that my choices were more expensive. There were no surprises along the way. One aspect of the job that I especially liked was that we worked together on all decisions and they were quite helpful in pointing out my options as we went along. I felt that Hand H was professional, helpful, pleasant to work with, and reliable. I would definitely call on them again for a future project.

Overall it was great. We liked it. They explained everything. They did find the best deal what they could for us. They kept the schedule very responsive to the project because it changed a little bit as we needed a little bit more work. I didn't ever feel like they were just making things up or anything like that. I would recommend them whole heartedly. We will definitely use their services again in the future.

We did a lot with him and he was great. It was great and we had no complaints. He was very honest. I've known his wife for years. We were not living in the house at the time. We are planning on using him again in the spring.

Carl arrived on time to assess what needed doing. Is professional and friendly. He listened to my concerns and made suggestions on how to approach various issues. His bid was competitive and sounded informed and gave confidence that he and his crew could do the job. The work progressed pretty quickly as soon as we gave them the job. His crew was good about keeping things neat as they went...carrying off any discards each day. Carl was responsive to requests and would give good advice on the variety of jobs that they were doing. For example we wanted the trim painted white, but there are a thousand whites to choose from - he assured us that white would be pretty much white once applied as it would seem lighter to the eye when applied on the exterior...it was right on. He had a contact at Sherwin Williams (our choice because of a discount my husband's company has there) that advised on the correct type of paint for trim and the front door. We supplied the paint, caulk, varnish, and paper for painting. Two jobs seemed to give his guys a challenge...one was a step on the back deck that had a cement base, but it was resolved with a bit more labor than it could have been and the other was in replacing rotten wood on the front porch support then dimensions of the hardie board made the two columns uneven on the bottom and part was sloppy and covered up with caulk...looks ok now and Carl guaranted that he would come back and repair it if it failed. Overall the job was done well and in a timely fashion. The house looks great and should be good for years to come. We would hire again.

Very poor experience. Would not recommend. 1. H&H did not complete the job and left us high and dry with the Powder Bath work unfinished. 2. H&H works on a flat labor rate of $30/hour - cash only. They bill every Friday and expect payment immediately (not on milestones). 3. On several occasions H&H attempted to cover up mistakes. e.g. a) installed wood floors in two places over damp subfloor - had to rip them up b) insisted that pantry ceiling was dry until we pulled it down - it was in fact soaking wet as was the insulation c) initially covered and took care of furniture that had to be moved. After the first week, however, this changed and on several occasions we found glue/paint/heavy equipment resting on delicate furnishings d) H&H workers tend to take two hour lunches - while we pay $30/hour e) at one point there was 1/2 day spent by at least two people ripping up damaged floors and relaying them after they scratched them when moving furniture. We were charged for that labor and materials. After complaining, the materials were refunded. f) several scuffs, scratches and glue marks on the installed "finished" wood floor. But the worst part was that H&H left us with a powder bathroom without baseboards, shoe moulding, vanity, and fixtures after being handed a check for $20K. This comment from Karl at H&H really says it all about this company - this was from a conversation on the phone when we were asking him if he could come and finish the job..... "It isn't about you, it's all about Karl". Sometimes you can pay a lot of money and get nothing. My recommendation is to stay WELL AWAY.

The overall project was remarkably painless. The work was done with efficiency and it cost exactly what they estimated. I picked out fixtures and paid for them myself, using their professional discount. The two owners have different strengths and the job was divided accordingly. John gave me the initial advice about remodeling, and oversaw the demolition part of the job which was complex and extensive since the house was built in 1940. The workers were extremely careful, clean, and competent. David then came in to oversee the installation of new fixtures, the painting, and the finishing. When a shower rod that I special ordered did not come in on time and we had to leave town for an extended period, David told me to call when we returned and he would have it installed. Three months later, when we returned to town, I gave him a call and the shower rod was put in in a matter of days. They're very nice people and I enjoyed the project! The bathroom looks beautiful.

Karl came to my home to assess what I specifically wanted. He offered valuable information on painting contrasts for the master bedroom, bathroom, and closet doors, trim, and baseboards. Karl also helped formalize what my options were in re-designing my master bathroom. His input allowed me to make a sound decision in how I wanted to proceed. Next, Karl promptly provided a bid via email but followed up with a phone call to ensure I had received his proposal and asked if I had any questions. I explained my complicated work schedule and he expertly worked with me to accomplish EVERYTHING timely. On the day tasks were scheduled Karl took the time to introduce me and allowed me to help communicate what I wanted. Karl was in contact throughout the day with his crew and his crew knew (and did) ask me questions. For example when it came time to hang the towel rods Hector wanted to know about centering with the wall or with the tub's marble backsplashes. Also, he hung them a bit higher when I said my cat loves to pull towels to the floor. Ok, now let me tell you about clean up. First they made a runner from the old carpet to be removed so that they could put it in a heavy traffic walkway while they worked and carried in tile, grout, et al. Each day they had intended to roll up the runner but I insisted they just leave it down, after all they'd be back the next day.....Also, when they removed the master bedroom carpet getting ready for the tile installation I did not find one loose carpet tack or piece of dirt!! Meaning that the floor was absolutely ready for a smooth tile install. Karl and his crew were polite and courteous. Completely trustworthy. I gave my garage code and left the entire house doors unlocked. Each day the crew ensured my garage door was shut and Karl drove by to double check that my house was secured. Payment. Karl periodically billed for materials and labor completed. He provided expense receipts and a detailed invoice. I personally know many of Karl's other satisfied customers. For example, remodeled a 20yr old kitchen/ eating area for a customer from his own design and custom cabinetry. Gorgeous. Karl personally took that client to the granite supplier and ensured that they selected a top quality product.

Karl worked with us every step of the way. He talked with us about what we wanted and made some very good suggestions about what would look good. Once the work started he left our kitchen in tact as much as possible while they made measured and built the cabinets. This helped us retain some normalcy while undergoing a major remodel. He went with us to pick out our slab of granite and provided valuable input on tile and color selection. The crew cleaned up every day. He was able to adapt to changes along the way to help provide the look we were going for. Karl was attentive and accessible during the entire process. We are now planning on a room addition and plan on having H&H do the work for us.

H & H Design & Build Inc did a good job. It went fine but there was a communication problem between us. It was my first remodeling experience so I did not know many things. The person who came to work was not very effective at communicating the timetable to me at first but once it was resolved, then the work was finished a bit fast. I guess I had lots of expectation because it was my first experience.

Very good experience. We wanted to replace our non-working sliding glass doors and a couple of windows, but the real challange was our backyard. It had been neglected for years and we wanted to "just do it over!" I gave H & H a landscape plan and they essentially ran with it, making adjustments as needed. The goal was to get it done by the time we were leaving out of town for the Christmas holidays. H & H worked very hard to get all the projects done in a timely manner, Rain or shine, they were working !We are very pleased with the work in the backyard. We now have additional outdoor living space that is very low maintenance and we are enjoying it inmensly. The exterior paint work was excellent. H & H replaced the facia throughout and seemed to caulk every nook and cranny of the house. In replacing the doors, the interior trim work was impressive because it just blended in with the rest of the wood work. I was especially pleased with the overall clean up of the crew. Every bit of scrap material and trash was removed from my property. Also, H & H was very sensitive to our budget limits and always made an effort to keep the job within those limits.

Excellent! I couldn't be happier with the end result. Karl was very easy to work with. He made some suggestions that I never would have thought of and he was very open to any suggestions that I made. His employees were there when they said they would be and were very polite and courteous. Everything was always cleaned up at the end of the day. The work was finished on schedule. I am planning on using H&H again to do some more remodelling work. I find Karl and his employees to be totally trustworthy and have no qualms about using them again.

They were very professional, did the job in 6 days total. Karl Hansen, the owner/director gave me updates frequently throughout the process. The price above doesn't include the cost of supplies (tub, tiles, grout, granite vanity), which we provided. Karl would go out and buy small things he needed and saved the receipts.
