Good news first- The contractor was pleasant and professional.
Bad news- multiple cancellations and reschedules. I'm incredibly busy (just because of travel) and have very little discretionary time. First appointment- no show; resched- several calls from several people- confusing and annoying and late. couldn't finish the job and had to come back. 3rd appointment cancelled by contractor (claimed to have called me but there is no phone record. He offered to show me phone records but did not; 4th appointment- work was completed, but some of the work time was used to correct previous mistake. Contractor really wants to get the work done (great!) and will do well to consult with homeowner to confirm decision.
The backoffice- ugh. Tried to make it right by comping an hour (cool) and I paid for the job, with the contingent that there was follow-up work. Got into a tussle with Ed (?). Never, EVER, spit in the eye of someone who has paid you out of good will. E.V.E.R.
Net- if you have a lot of extra time, don't mind getting tons of Abbot and Costello calls, these are your guys.
.When he arrived, he did not have the right tools for the job (which he had been told of in advance). We had to go to Home Depot and buy a masonry drill bit and a drill bit that would cut through metal. His drill was not fully charged and would die every 20 minutes. After 2 hours of drilling, he told me that that there was a metal plate behind the brick that the couldn't punch through with the metal drill bit. He guessed (but didn't fully know) that the metal was cast iron and that it would be impossible to drill through. He suggested getting a blow torch to melt though the metal plate and then filling the hole up with fire suppressant materials once the TV was hung. I declined this option. After 3 hours, he left to go think on this problem and said he would come back the next day.
The next day, he returned and told me that the only way to hang the television was to go back to Home Depot and buy a pneumatic tool that would fire a shot at the brick using PSI. This would punch the bolts through the brick, but the mount would never come down once it was up. After calling several other contractors for a second opinion, I determined this was a bad idea and decided to go no further. I asked him if I owed him or Done.com anything expecting not to owe anything. He told me that I owed him $134.00. I asked him should I make the check out to his company (Looc Painting) or to Done.com; he told me to his company.
This was on a Sunday and there was no one working at Done.com that day to confirm or deny what he was telling me. He was very upset that I was cancelling the job and firing him and I was afraid of what would happen if I refused payment. I wrote him the check. The next day, I called my bank to put a stop payment on the check only to find out he had cashed it already.
I contacted Done.com and they told me that I shouldn't have payed him and that if I did, I should have made the check out to Done.com. (This contradicted what the contractor--a representative of this company--had told me.) They refused to reimburse me, but offered to send a contractor out to mount my television. The only issue with this was the only contractor they had in my area to mount televisions was the one I had fired the day before and had no trust in.
As of today, I have been told by Done.com that they refuse to reimburse me. The contractor refused to return the money to me. I am out $134.00, the television still hasn't been hung, and I now have 4 holes in my chimney. This company is a horrible company and their contractors (who Done.com says is background checked) are very inept if not incompetent. I will never use them again and I strong urge other to do the same.
