I would hire him again and would recommend him to others.
Following is a letter to the contractor that I included in the envelope with the final payment. In my experience, anyone with any pride at all in his work would have been back the very next day to try to provide some sort of customer satisfaction. But not this guy! I have not heard a single word from him.
and quot;Your final check is enclosed, not including the bogus charge for the restocking fees. The pave stones
were returned because they were the wrong style, NOT because they were the wrong color. Even if they had been the
“right” color they would still have had to have been returned because of the style. You and you alone were
responsible for ordering the wrong style. You verbally acknowledged this fact to me and told me unequivocally that
you had accepted responsibility for the restocking fees. Now you want to renege on that statement and
try to bill me for something that was NOT my responsibility. Shame on you!
As I indicated, your final check is enclosed, though, very frankly, reluctantly so. Your
workmanship on this project is shoddy, amateurish and unprofessional. I list the following issues:
1. The flat stones you laid are uneven and irregular. The foundation for the stones, especially under the walkway to the Gazebo, was improperly prepared and the stones will certainly settle. In fact it looks to me like they have already begun to do so.
2. The raised beds are uneven, crooked and unlevel. The first bed is the worst of the three and the most visible.
3. There are unsightly cement and mortar stains all over many of the pre-existing pave stones, some as much as ten feet away from the actual work area.
4. There are unsightly mortar stains on the face of many (if not most) of the stones in the raised beds.
5. So far I have found at least 4 breaks in my irrigation system, all of which appear to be due to careless demolition
work. And this is in addition to the break in the water line (a water line that I pointed out to you before the work
ever began) at the beginning of the job.
Your overall lack of supervision of this job and especially of your hard working but inexperienced and largely incompetent helper is, in my opinion, inexcusable. And even more so when he was left without the proper tools with which to work. You assured me at the beginning that you worked only one job at a time -- something that clearly turned out to be a
blatant untruth. Furthermore, your eye for the aesthetics of a job was a severe disappointment. Had I not “interfered” fairly regularly the job would have looked even shoddier than it currently does.
You were NOT the low bidder on this job. You were only a couple hundred dollars lower than the high bidder and quite a bit higher than the low bidder. I chose you for this work because of the very high rating you had on Angie’s List. In retrospect, it is a mystery to me how you got such a high rating. You certainly will not get such a rating from me, nor will I be able to recommend your work to anyone I know.and quot;
The above letter only outlines the most egregious of the problems with the final work. There were many other issues too numerous to list here -- some of which I caught and made him redo and many of which I clearly did not catch before it was too late.
I will never do business with this company again and I strongly advise others to do likewise.
