We just moved to Austin, Steiner ranch and had the most horrible unprofessional experience with Boatright Hardwood Floors! They took the contract to install hardwood in our house which started in April and continued to stretch it. On Friday, September 2, I was promised by the owner Sam Boatright over the phone that they would be back the following week on Tuesday (after Labor day) to continue work and finish sanding that week downstairs. They never turned up nor did we hear from them. We had to call them yesterday and they turned up for 3 hours. This morning while they were sanding the living area, one of the employee told me that they were instructed that if any one was in the way that they should walkout by the owner of the company. The painters turned up and I immediately told them to clear the area that they had their things, as asked by the floor guys which was in a nook away from where the floor work was going on. The flooring guys decided to quit since they were instructed by the owner even though the painters was not anywhere in their vicinity. They took the money for the job that they barely started, and walked out of the job. I have never come across such unprofessional and dishonorable behavior in all my dealings as this is not my first home renovation. Be very wary of this company BOATRIGHT HARDWOOD FOORS!

Boatright was extremely responsive. I contacted Greg on Friday and met with him Monday morning. Boatright was able to schedule my work for the Thursday of that week! I was impressed by how quickly they could do the work. They went out of their way to meet my schedule. The results were great, the oak floor looked virtually new. This was done without the need to sand the floor-- just a stripping of the existing finish, a reapplication of the stain/oil, and a buff. Very nice job.

It went pretty well.  They weren't super responsive, but it is my understanding that they had a lot of work going on (Austin is booming, so a lot of contractors have this very same issue).  They did a great job though, and when there was communication it was good.  I would use them again.
Response from Boatright Hardwood Floors
"Although this rating is overall good, we would like to address the two D Grades. As for responsiveness, We were given 3 points of contact for communication. We feel we communicated well with the person with questions at any given time, but they weren't communicating amongst themselves. There was a contractor out of Las Vegas, who was hired by the owners early on the project, that wanted to move the project at a fast pace, disregarding the need to handle the water damage situation sequentially. We feel this was part of the communication issues early on, as the contractor was not present during the final stages of this project. As for punctuality, we were dealing with a water damage project. There are many variables on projects of this nature. The dry out took longer than expected due to the owner/contractor doing his own dry out, which caused us delays. When they said it was dry, we came back to find it was not dry and needed further dry out, which caused us another delay. The next time we came back, it just happened to be raining and we discovered that the water leak had not been fixed and we were asked to hold off again, creating another delay for us. These delays on the owner/contractors end were continuously backing us up into a fully booked schedule. In situations like this, we feel a little leeway needs to be given on scheduling when dealing with unknowns in a water damage situation. We are very surprised to see this rating from this customer especially when we were very patient with them with all their delays interrupting our schedule."

The project was done in two phases.  In the first phase, Boatright did not finish on schedule and the floors were not as level as anticipated.  Sam Boatright said that his crews were spread too thin and assured me that the second phase would go more smoothly.  They even gave me a partial credit due to the floors not being level.
The second phase was even worse.  It took Boatright over one month to finish the second phase.  They used the wrong color wood filler than what was used in the rest of the house.  They also used a black shiny epoxy too fill in knots.  And, the stairs squeak.  I asked Mr. Boatright to personally inspect the floors and he has refused.  My general contractor said that Boatright was the best in Austin.  He was wrong!
Response from Boatright Hardwood Floors
"This is hard to respond to without pointing fingers at this person, he asked for a $5,000.00 credit on the first phase for a small item that was in tolerance with the NWFA specification for leveling, he did not want it fixed just the money in my opinion, we gave him the $5,000.00 credit. Same thing on Phase 2, he asked for another $3,000.000 credit because we were not finished on time and some punch list items that had been signed off on by his wife., our schedule was late due to the incompetence of his Builder not being on time. We are usually one of the last trades to finish on a job so we get squeezed hard to make up the lost time. After we finished his punch list for phase 2 this job was walked and signed off on by this owners wife. In my opinion the owner was just looking to avoid paying his bill in full like he did on Phase 1and he has not paid his bill in full to date.."

I'm very happy with the result. Having my floors refinished was one of the best decisions I made, and Boatright did a great job. No complaints.

Overall excellent experience.  A very knowledgeable staff person did the estimate, which was complex because there were several different projects.  The work was done exactly according to the specifications and schedule and price.

I just bought a house and needed to have the floors refinished. The people we bought the house from had renovated the kitchen and installed new hand-scraped hardwood floors that were darker than the original hardwood floors in the rest of the house. I wanted the floors to be the same color even though the wood type was very different. Jose was on the job and he did an amazing job of matching the color -- he personally showed me all of the options and he personally did all of the work. He knew what he was doing and loves matching colors, it's his thing apparently. Anyway, my floors look AMAZING. I couldn't be happier. Boatright Floors deserves an A+ (especially Jose!)

Everything was done expertly and considerately.  For example, they took care in taping off the rest of the house so that NO dust leaked in from the sander.  They told me ahead of time what type of inconvenience to expect, and for how long.  It cost a lot, but I suspect their prices are right in line with the going rate.  (I only got one other bid, and it was even higher.)  After the job was complete, I went by their Alameda store with more questions about how to care for the floor, and they were again polite and informative.  I highly recommend this company, based on my experience

I had water damage to a reclaimed hardwood floor. I called them because they had refinished this floor in 2005. The area of proposed repair was determined by observation and I gave them a deposit check for $3000 ( 50% ). Started the work ripping out damage and the damage was more extensive than thought. They did not have the test device to tell how far damage went. Because the cost was looking like it would exceed my insurance deductible , I contacted my carrier for a claim and let them handle it from there on. They did not have an ongoing relationship with Boatright and turned the repairs over to a general contractor. I told the Boatright supervisor that the insurance adjuster was going in a different direction and pulled them off the job. I knew I would need to pay Boatright for the partial work they had done, which was nowhere near the deposit, and the supervisor told me they would adjust and get back to me. I have tried numerous times over the last 8 months to get a response and have been ignored to date.

Boatright installed subfloor and wood, then due to builder delays almost a year went by before they were able to complete the floors. Install managers for Boatright along with Sam and others very thoroughly inspected all the boards in detail and took it upon themselves to replace a good number of the boards prior to any final sanding and staining. Worked with builder and myself (home owner) on stain color samples, direction boards should be laid, etc. The floors turned out PERFECT!

It went very well. Work done on time and on budget. Work done while we were out of town. Upon return all work was completed. The workers inadvertently cut a low voltage wire and Sam Boatright accepted all responsibility without question or protest. An exemplary display of professionalism.

I chose this company because I have been in the Austin area for thirty years and I am familiar with this company's reputation. I gave them a call and they gave me a bid. We accepted it. They started the job when we needed them to start and they finished the job when we needed them done. It was easy to deal with them.
