The technician came out and changed all eight of our AFCI breakers. The owner of A-One, Karen, determined that our breakers were on warranty, which meant that we were charged nothing for parts. This saved us a significant amount of money.
I was pleased with the service this company provided, and would recommend them.
We called back several times that day asking where the Electrician went. We didn't get an answer until the next day. Karen called us back the following morning. One would assume she would be apologetic for a job incomplete. Boy were we wrong. She called back to let us know we did not pay the $125 service fee. While I was speaking with her to let her know the job was incomplete, she hung up on me during the conversation. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. I called her back and she still remained hostile. As an owner of a service business myself, I am shocked at the level of Karen's lack of respect and empathy towards this situation.
Even with the job still remains incomplete, I agreed to pay the $125 Service Fee, which I did, but let her know in return, I would be posting this message to warn others to avoid A-One at all costs.
Regards,
Mohib
"Thank you for a great review. We try our hardest to take care of everyone and do it quickly and neatly. Good and bad news. We take credit cards now but we have to charge a processing fee of 3%. The credit card company charges us a percentage of what we charge you every time. Have a good day Karen"
"Thank You for a nice review. We will work on making the quality even better next time. Take care and have a great week Karen"
"I am sorry that I was not able to get to Round Rock quickly. I did call and go out there when you said someone would be home but no one was there. It is hard to get from Oak Hill in ways southwest Austin to Round Rock due to traffic. I always try to put several jobs together so I don't have to spend an hour driving each was for a 2 hour job. Because of the drive time I have to increase the charge a little which I explained and you didn't seem to have a problem with that. I also recommended calling someone closer to you to help with the time factor. It was nice talking to you and meeting your family. I hope all is good and everything is working. Karen Phaup"
"Thank you for giving me a chance to help you out. It was a pleasure meeting you and working with you Karen"
The only "hold up" in the process was due to the city taking up to 3 days to turn off service to allow work to be done. When she was waiting on the city, she was at our house doing preliminary steps to get ahead. She was constantly following up with the city to check status and also kept us informed every step of the way. So we played the waiting game here and there but when Karen was allowed, she was ready to work.
We asked her a ton of questions about the work she was currently doing and work we could do ourselves to update other aspects of the electrical system. She was always willing to give us advice and helpful insight with every question. She would also describe instances where things went wrong and how we could prevent problems from causing major damage.
She was very quick in replying to texts, calls, or emails. All said and done, we didn't just get work done by an electrician, we have found our electrician! We highly recommend Karen at A One Electric for your electric needs.
First I provided the home inspection directly to Karen and it specifically outlined that the hous had no ground. The inspection was provided before Karen arrived to the home that I was putting a bid in on, I ultimately purchased the property. Karen supposedly did a separate electrical inspection and said all looked fine other than what had already been noted on the regular home inspection.
After closing on the home I had time to look at Karen's bid and I noticed that the ground installation had not been included. Karen admitted that she had not noticed that there was no ground and that was why it was not included. I am okay with mistakes, but the problem was zero apology for missing the ground, followed immediately by a demand for payment for the electrical inspection. Personally I would have thought she would be so embarrassed by missing an item in a bid that she had been pre-notified of in a supplied home inspection report and during her alleged electrical inspection of the home that I thought she would have dropped it all together, but alas I give people too much credit. By the way the ground installation doubled the bid.
Next she told me I would probably need to remind her of the appointment to do the bid work????..I pause here to let that sink in, she asked me to remind her of the appointment to complete the bid work. Amazingly though she had no problem remembering to follow-up on the inspection fee. I was so appalled by her brazen arrogance that I blew her off, but she continued to ask for payment for the inspection so in the end I finally had to suck it up and deal with her to get her to stop contacting me.
In the meantime I looked at the bid again and she wanted $16 per socket change. Let me break this down for everyone, I have basic experience on job sites from following my dad around when I was kid. After the first couple of outlets, that cost 50 cents each (yes 1/2 a dollar) in a builders pack from Lowes, I was doing the outlets myself in about 4 minutes from start to finish. Talking to a contractor friend, he told me he does them in about 2 minutes from start to finish and that any experienced electrician or contractor can do it about the same speed and he freaked at the bid, unfortunately he does not live near or I would just have him do the work. So at my speed at replacing the outlets that is $240 an hour, or for some perspective, Karen charges more than my attorney per billable hour; which frankly, I think sums it up.
Mind blowing, zero embarrassment about asking me to remind her about the appointment or missing that there was no ground on the house. I figured why bother cancelling the appointment if I need to remind her, but she actually remembered it, I guess it was a slow week. I did cancel at that point.
When I talked to my roommate who was at the house when she did "the electrical inspection" he said she took off maybe three switch plates and called it done. She missed the buzzing switches in the garage and in the living room. He knew I would blow a gasket and with not seeing her penciled on the calendar he figured I had realized she was useless so there was no point in giving me more reasons to be upset.
Did I bother spelling out why I cancelled to Karen, no. I figure if she is so arrogant to ask the paying customer to remind her of an appointment, so incompetent to miss no ground that she was pre-notified of, so oblivious to not apologize for missing no ground, and so dishonest to check three outlets and call it an electrical inspection and charge a $100 that talking to the wall would be more productive and less frustrating.
Yes, I did pay her for the inspection in order to cut ties.
Sad really, I gave her a break thinking I was probably just super stressed during the home purchase and move only to find I could have saved someone else the headache and hassle, sorry fellow Angie's List members for not leaving this review sooner.
"I hope everything has been working out for you since I've been there. With this cold fronts we've been having I am so glad we got your heater in the greenhouse up and running. I wanted to say thank you for the great review and that it was a real please getting to meet you. I really do care about my customers and you are the type that makes it easy to care. Thank you for hiring me and being so easy to work with. You are greatly appreciated. Have a wonderful year and holler if I can ever help you again. Karen Phaup"
"Hi (removed member name) Glad to hear that you are finally in your house and able to enjoy it a little before the summer is up. Thank you for the work and the positive review. You have been a great guy to work for and if you ever need anything feel free to give me a shout. Have a great winter. Karen"
Please note that Karen DOES do quality work and we've never had to have her come back due to any errors on her part.
"Hi [member name removed], I am confused on how you can write such a negative and positive review at the same time which could possibly bring my rating down. We have worked together hanging these same chandeliers many times over the years and each time we hang them we have to find out what height you want them, take out links of chain, shorten the wire, and find the parts to hang them with. A couple of your chandeliers are bigger then I am height wise and twice the width of me. These are not that simple to hang because of all the adjustments and the need for 2 people to be on 1 ladder just to get them hung. New construction is always easier. With your lights It took 2 people to hang them and what makes you think that my helper is not an apprentice, his age? He has been working with me for almost 2 years. He was a carpenter in the past but is now an electrical apprentice. Besides, I would never put anyone on a job that I didn't think would do a good job. That is why you have kept hiring me I thought. In reference to the scheduling, you told me before you went back to Hawaii that you had bought a house and you needed these things done. I told you to call me when you got back which you did. I told you I have been very busy and that I needed to finish up some jobs because school was getting ready to start and people had to get these things done before then. You told me that was no problem that you were not in a hurry. I tried to keep you informed but maybe I didn't do a good enough job. For that I am sorry. I will make it a point to do better for my future customers. Just remember, I always put emergencies first in front of non emergency jobs. Last but not least, the bill. We worked 4 1/2 hrs. I did not charge a trip charge or the $165 / hr that most companies do. I showed up when I said I would when a lot of the companies these days don't and whether or not you thought my helper was licensed should not make a difference. When I go to the doctor and only get to see a nurse practitioner, I get charged the same. As long as the job is done properly it shouldn't matter. In reference to being a long time customer, this is true and I thank you for all the business. This doesn't mean that I am worth less just because I have known you for a while. You don't charge your long term patients less do you? I didn't get a break when I saw you professionally either even though I have known you for a long time. I wouldn't expect to pay less either. Business is business and we all have bills to pay. I am sorry that you feel ripped off. That's the last thing I would want to do. I really have enjoyed getting to know you and think your family is great. I wish you all the best and hope your and your family get settled back into Austin quickly. If I can help you in any way please feel free to call. I hope there are no hard feelings. Sincerely Karen"
"Hi [removed member name], I'm so glad you were able to get it fixed and not have to go broke doing it. I know that I get into situations that I wish someone would just give me suggestions to help me out and I am always grateful for the advise. I figure if some helps me out, I should return the favor and if we all would just give a little then the world would be a happier place. I am here if you ever need me. Thank you for calling me to begin with and thank you for such a nice review. Have a great rest of the summer. Karen"
Two years ago when every day was at least 100 degrees, Karen installed the wiring for our new swimming pool as well as added outlets to our deck. We have had no problems with them. We also had her look at our old chandelier that was made in Czechoslovakia. Other electricians said that they could not find the parts that they needed to fix it due its age and where it was made. The sockets where some of the lights screwed in were broken. Karen asked if she could take it home to work on it and we gladly let her. A week later, she brought it over and it looked brand new. It was all polished and all of the lights worked. She said that she contacted antique stores and was able to cheaply purchase the needed sockets. Karen even gave us 2 extra sockets if we ever need them. She only charged 50 dollars. We were thrilled! We thought that it could never be fixed.
We recommend Karen to anyone that needs an electrician. She is personable, knowledgeable, efficient and has reasonable rates.

"Merry Christmas. Thank you for a great review, I'm really glad you got it out. I believe that someone who is willing and able to do simple things shouldn't have to pay for something that simple. We should all be willing to teach and learn from others to make life easier. Have a great New Year and I'm hear if you ever need me again. Thanks for calling and trusting in me to help. Karen - A-One Electric"
"Hi Member, I hope your fans are stilling working out for you. Thank you for the great recommendation. The appreciation for the work I do is a big plus in the job. The biggest thrill I get from doing electrical work is seeing the joy on peoples face when they finally get what they want. Thank you for all that and I hope you had a Merry Christmas. Karen"
