"Hi Angieslist members, We enjoyed doing this project which included re-finishing the client's front door, fence, and deck. I thought our work turned out fantastic, and we were disappointed to months later hear of 2 spots on the deck with slight flaking. We were glad to get it sanded and touched up very quickly for her and we expect it will last for years. Once in a while we get wood that's run through the kiln a bit longer than normal. The kiln drying process is intended to bring the moisture content of wood down to 10 - 16%. If it is brought lower the wood becomes harder, less accepting of stain, and the stain that is applied takes longer to dry. Also, after application the stain will sometimes flake in a spot or two, require just a little sanding and touch up, then be good for a couple years. That was the case with this client's deck, and we did try our best to explain the situation and remedy it expeditiously. Best Regards, Todd"
"Hi Angieslist members, There are several inaccurate statements in this review, and we won't address them all for brevity's sake. Just to paint a full picture, at one point this client was trying to get my worker to do several things that were not on the estimate. I had to place a phone call (she quickly remembered the actual work items on the estimate) to her which in hindsight should have ended with me saying we respectfully remove ourselves from this job. We do stand by our work on this job, and we even came by after 6 months to touch up the decks at the client's request. However, this was not a matter of us doing a subpar stain job, but rather a client who did not seem to absorb the expectations I laid out for 2 decks that had been badly neglected. The problem with these decks is that the wood is so dry from lack of regular maintenance that fibers of the wood flake off if anything touches and rubs even slightly against the grain. Using a broom to sweep off the deck or scooting chair legs would be good examples of actions that would potentially knock off some wood fibers. Unfortunately these wood fibers bring with them the stain that we applied to the decks, and suddenly the deck is left with no stain in a small spot. I certainly tried my best to explain this to the client, and her response was to attempt to badger us into re-staining both decks after a full year had passed since we did the work. She was aggressive and threatening, we chose to refuse based on her behavior and our strong feeling that the poor state of the wood caused the issues the client had, not our re-staining process. Best regards, Todd"
"Hi [Member Name Removed], Your point has been made, if you are able to delete this review I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Todd"
Todd was very responsive and took time to explain how they would avoid potential problems. We had multiple postponements due to weather, but he always gave me reasonable notices and expectations. Dustin did all of the labor, which came out well. There were only 2 overspray spots that he quickly cleaned. I would have expected dozens of oversprays and so I was pleasantly surprised. Overall, I would recommend them and use them again.
Within a few hours of seeking a services company on Angie's List to stain our new fence, Todd was one of the very first to reply with his interest in bidding. We scheduled immediately for Todd to come out to the house to provide us a quote. Todd showed up just as he said on time (as scheduled) even though his drive was at least an hour. Being on time is a very big pet peeve of mine! Anyway Todd was very friendly and professional and was able to provide some recommendations, which were very helpful since this is not something a homeowner does often at all. Todd arrived again as expected when he was to work the job. What impressed me immediately with Todd was that he took the time to cover plants, trees, and side of our house along with taping areas of the fence. The effort he put into the prep work before certainly made a difference and there was almost no area in our yard or house that had stain where it was not supposed to be. Anyway, the same day (which was about 98 degrees by the way); Todd started the application portion of the project. By the end of this very hot day day he had completed the work. This was nice to have it done in a day! The outcome was better than I expected and we are very happy that our new fence will be protected and looks great for years to come. It's also great to have our neighbors comment on how good our fence looks! In fact, my new neighbors had Todd over within the next week to stain their new fence since they had just completed construction on the new house. I watched Todd that day as well and again impressed on his effort to prep the fence prior to staining. I did not know that a pressure washer could be so handy! Anyway - I got sidetracked with that. Todd is very professional and does great work. I would highly recommend Custom Deck and Stain anytime.
On time, courteous and easy to talk with, I would highly recommend Todd. As I said previously, he was as conscientious a worker as I have seen. It was refreshing to know there are people who still take pride in their work. We have full confidence he will have the same fastidiousness with the stain as he did with the power washing. The fence looks great. Now we wait for the staining.
