First of all, I read many reviews and a lot of customers said Rustic Fencing was pricey. Not in my case. Actually, they were within $100 of the bids of three competitors. I took bids from five companies and narrowed it to Rustic and MNG. MNG was wonderfully responsive, answering my questions in full detail with rapid-fire responses. Rustic Fencing wasn't as interactive, but they didn't ignore me, either. I just don't like having to wait a couple of days for a call to be returned. I felt the differences between them might be as close as a coin flip, but there were several things that broke the tie. Rustic has been in the business a very, VERY long time. The man who dug the post holes has worked for them for DECADES. The crew that knocked out my job in dreary weather in a single day? You guessed it, they also have DECADES of work with Rustic. Rustic uses No. 1 cedar, something only MNG considered. Instead of spraying on the stain, Rustic soaks the wooden planks in the stain. (I would think that, as the planks get nicked up over the years, the wood should retain a more finished look with the color having soaked into the planks.) Note, future customers, that they only have one color they use for the stain (because there wasn't enough call for the others they once offered), but don't let that be a factor; Rustic quickly accommodated me on unique needs I had for the project. Two more things that really set Rustic apart: 1) their warranty (one bidder offered 90 days, which pales to 5-7 years, depending on what you have done), and 2) the way they made the gate for me. Rustic didn't put up the typical wooden gate. They made a steel frame. Even after the wood rots away, the steel gate can just be resurfaced with new planks. It's rock-solid. Rustic even made it with adjustable parts on the hinged area to accommodate future swelling, settling, or whatever would get in the way of smooth movement. Like so many other reviewers noted, the actual craftsmanship by Rustic is first-class. It's almost 'art' if you add some of the ornamentation, not just a 'fence.' Rustic's agent who worked with me designed the entire thing--right down to keeping the fence level on the top despite a hard slope in the yard--and came to my house before and after the project to make sure neither I nor they had any 'hidden surprises.' I'd liken the experience somewhat to buying tires: you might get plenty of mileage off a cheap set of tires but, if you want to be safe, get the good stuff because the money isn't going to matter in the long run...it's the quality of life the investment offers you in safety.

We had a problem with the fence after installation. Rustic used brackets with bolts that point straight out, past the post itself. Rustic didn't mention any difference or give us a safety warning. Our dog Marshall was chasing a squirrel when he brushed against a fence post. One of the bolts cut him down the side and we rushed him to the animal hospital for emergency surgery. A company officer later told me this is their standard way of building fences. I highly recommend picking a fence company that uses brackets with the bolt sideways behind the post.

I wasn't as happy with them. I called an left a message, he called me back, and then he was going to call me back to get more information. He never called me back, I finally sent a email to the manager, and I had a hard time staying in touch with him. After he said that he was done, I went out there and they weren't. They had to get somebody back which, they did. The work got done, but I felt like the contractor on that job. I had so much trouble trying to get a hold of him and getting it scheduled. It was around the holiday, I talked with him once and he was supposed to call me back. I tried calling him back and then when he finally got in touch with me, he wanted to put it off until after the holidays. I told him that I had wasted three weeks trying to get a hold of him, in his defense, he did turn around and get it scheduled. I found out that part of the fence that I was getting fixed, they had done before. I've already had problems with it.

They did it in a timely manner with a reasonable price.  They met the specific standards that I wanted.  They do a lot of types of fencing in my area.  It was their ability to match and exceed my expectation for the wrought iron fence.

Bottom line - fence looks great, we do recommend them.  When I reviewed Angie's List previous reviews I was concerned and called the owners.  They are locally owned and have been in business for years.  The quality of the fence is outstanding, do check for split boards and they will replace them.  The stain had to be done twice but they did come back and do it, no questions asked.  If we had the time we would have done the staining ourself because I believe applying with a paint brush is better than spraying and cost saving.  As with any contractor you need to be there or at least be checking in during the day. Several of our neighbors also used them and all seem to be happy. I'm waiting for them to come back to the neighborhood to cover some of the post in our driveway and to leave some stain for us. Our sales person is a little slow in responding (a little annoying) but he knows what he is doing which was more important than his speed.

Good quality.

I searched Angie's List for the fencing repair I had done. Those people were crazy. It was crazy expensive. They were really expensive. This was not an Angie's List retailer. The quality of the materials that they used was good. The sales guy didn’t fully explain to me how they were going to go about replacing the fencing. It was really important, because it was a portion of the fence that I thought was getting replaced and it wasn’t. With regard to responsiveness, I asked him questions about stuff and he didn’t call. With regard to professionalism, he didn’t communicate real well. The quality of work was excellent.

Bob Erwin provided profession service.  We had a cement wall, entire wood on wood cedar fence along with a wrought iron fence on one side  installed.  The work was excellent and the installers were good at their crafts. The installers were professional, timely and polite.   We have received numerous compliments on our new fence. 

Rustic Fence was awesome! We were very happy with our salesman Bob's professionalism. The crew that installed the fence was very friendly and sensitive to our privacy. We had several quotes and found Rustic to be very reasonable. Rustic also worked with our neighbors to make the payment splitting process easier for us. They were all able to call Rustic directly to pay for their portion of the fence by credit card. The quality of the work is exceptional. We have already had several friends request their information after seeing the finished product! I would recommend them for anyone looking for a high quality, fairly priced fence.

The service went very well. The technicians were able to execute the plan pretty much exactly the way we needed, even though it was not a very common style. As they were building the fence, they were able to accommodate our needs and minor changes along the way. I had no issues with scheduling. I am planning on using them again to have them finish the fence.
