The Floor Mender
About us
The FloorMender has been a family owned business since 2001. We are backed by 35 years experience. We are an A+ member of the Better Business Bureau. We have a $2 million general liability policy and we offer a three year warranty. While installing a new carpet may cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, restretching your current carpet only costs $99 for the first room and $65 for each additional room. Rooms are up to 144 square feet. That's a huge savings! The minimum charge of $150 covers most small repairs, others require an additional cost. Texas resident’s carpets may need repairs or re-stretching if large ripples develop over time. Ripples and bumps in the carpet may become hazardous and are unsightly. Carpet may shift over time due to heavy traffic patterns, moving large pieces of furniture or poor installation. Utilizing professional stretching tools and over 35 years experience, Kevin Benton can remove these by pulling the carpet across the room and trimming the excess before re-tacking the carpet. In some cases the carpet may need to be cut then re-seamed to remove the ripples. Most carpet repairs or re-stretching can be done by TheFloormender without you moving the furniture out. Carpet repairing and re-stretching, may also be needed to finish off the edge if new flooring, such as tile, stone or wood is installed in areas transitioning into carpet. Most hard surface installers do not do this type work properly. TheFloormender can install new tackless strips, stretch and cut the carpet and then use an appropriate transition technique to complete the edge neatly and professionally. TheFloormender also offers : carpet cleaning 3 areas $133.99, 4 areas $178.99, 5 areas $206.99, Air duct cleaning, each thermostat $299.95, Tile cleaning $1.10per sq ft, clean and seal $1.35 sq ft, minimum $150. Upholstery sectional $169.99, sofa$99.99, loveseat $89.99, chair $45.99, Kitchen chair seat only $20, seat and back $30. Ottoman $29.99. Minimum charge $150.

When the Angie's List Magazine came in the mail this past month, I noticed an ad in the back of the book for The Floor Mender. The ad specifically called out "squeaky floorboard" repair, in addition to carpet stretching and repair. I went to Angies List to read this contractor's reviews and then visited the contractor's website. I was satisfied with the information I saw, so I called to book an appointment.
Being a smaller contractor, I was expecting to have to leave a voicemail and have my call returned at the end of the day or during a break in Kevin's schedule. I was pleasantly surprised to have my call answered within 3 rings by Kevin Benton, the owner/contractor. I explained I saw his ad and wanted to schedule an appointment. He asked if he could ring me back in 10 minutes when he finished his current job and could access his schedule. As promised Kevin called back in 10 minutes and answered all my questions. I told him I'd like to book an appointment. He offered me an appointment the next day due to a client reschedule earlier that day. I declined due to my schedule and asked for a date that was a week and a half later. He put me on the books.
Kevin had informed me that he would arrive between 9 and 9:30am the day of the appointment. Although, I forgot to note in my calendar that it was a 30 min start window. So at 9:12am appointment day, I called Kevin. Again much to my pleasure, he answered my call on the 2 ring. He ever so kindly and respectfully reminded me ( I truly mean that!) that it was a 30 minute start window and that he was on his way. He explained his assistant had called out with the flu that morning and was a little delayed. At 9:30am exactly he called me back to notify me that he was only a few minutes away. I told him not to worry and that I appreciated the update.
He arrived moments later. After bringing his tools into the house, we walked the areas of concern. He immediately advised me due to the tight Berber carpet I have and the angle of the doorway there could be a slightly visible seam. I asked if he could explain why and he explained thoroughly the reasons. I agreed to proceed and was happy that a contractor actually took the time to set my expectations upfront versus explaining it away after the work was done. He also reviewed his pricing with me at this point.
As stated in his scope of work, Kevin moves all the furniture. I did offer to help him as his assistant was not there, although he really didn't need me. Kevin proceeded for the next 3 hours to work dliigently, never taking a real break. I think he stopped work one time for 3 minutes or so when he took a phone call which he respectfully stepped outside to take. When he found an unusual sitation in the floorboards which was done by the builder, he called me up to show me what the builder did and offered a possible explanation of why it was done. (I had always wondered what that "bump" I felt under the carpet was!)
Kevin put all the furniture back and vaccummed all the areas he work on. The seam that he had create to do the floorboard work was barely visible. I know that was "price" I had to pay to stop the squeak. I now know I will not select tight Berber in the future. The floorboard pop was resolved to my satisfaction and the wrinkles in the hallway are gone.
The only thing that did not go as planned was that he forgot to work on the floorboard in office. During our initial walk through, I had showed him 2 rooms with a floorboard popping issue - the bedroom, which was the whole reason I called him, and the office. However, when he brought me up to inspect the final work, he had forgotten to work on the office floorboard. He admitted he forgot about it and offered to start working on it right then. I told him not to worry about it. Out of fairness to him and others on his schedule that day, I did not feel it was right for me to take him up on his offer to stay since I did not mention that office when booking my appointment. I knew Kevin might be behind schedule anyways that day without his assistant. I was still very happy that he offered to do it without any hint of making me feel bad or that I would be putting him out to do it. Refreshing!
Kevin presented me with the line item receipt for the day's work along with a 3 year transferable warranty paper. While most smaller contractors warranty their work and it is noted on the receipt, I felt it was a nice touch on his part to present a separate piece of paper calling out his warranty. I definitely will be referring him to friends and clients.
PS - It was wonderful to go to sleep tonight in the master bedroom without hearing the obnoxiously loud pops in the ceiling as my mom walks about upstairs!
The carpet looks very nice now.
The experience with trimming the area rug were not as positive; while the finished product is good, they damaged the underlying hardwood with nail-holes and knife scratches. They did not take any noticable precautions to protect the hardwood; thus the damage.
I would recommend them heartily for their primary service, that of restretching carpet; however, I would be hesitant in using them for any other carpet related needs.
