It turned out to be a catastrophe. He purposely underbid the project by approximately $125,000 in order to get the job. He even told me not to be mad that he underbid because he needed money badly (although he now denies it). Turns out that he was in deep financial trouble and was willing to lie and cheat anyone who came along. In the beginning he was supposed to meet with the architect twice but after setting the time and date he would call about an hour before the scheduled meeting with a flimsy excuse of why he couldn't make it. Now I know it was because the architect would have questioned him on how he could build our 3700 sq. ft house for what he bid for it. In fact I asked the same thing and he told me that prices for materials were down and that due to the poor economy his subcontractors were willing to work for a fraction of costs just for a job. I thought maybe it was possible and he had been in business for some time and there were people whose houses he built some years ago who recommended him. His bid was $315,000. Luckily, I paid for all supplies, permits and subcontractors. Had I not I probably would have lost everything I had. I used my own savings to pay for everything. I took out a small construction loan as a buffer. I thought it was strange that he was constantly asking me to pay him thousands of dollars so early in the construction. He told me he built $35,000 into the price for himself so that it was OK to give him the money he kept begging for. He would cry that his utilities were going to be shut off, that his Bobcat was going to be repossessed and a host of other sob stories which were none of my business. during the first 2-3 months of construction I paid him $30,000 for himself. At this point it was starting to become quite clear that the cost of the house was going to be well over his bid. I told him that I was afraid I could lose everything I had if I couldn't afford to finish the house and repay the construction loan. I asked him what he was going to do about it. He said everybody is worried now days and that he didn't know what to do because he had no money. I told him he wasn't getting another dime since the final cost of the house would be way more than his bid. He came back once after that and that was all we saw of him. My wife and I hired contractors the last several months to get the house finished. I had to dip into my wife's IRA and my IRA to get it done. A number of subcontractors that work with Johnson were either incompetent, thieves or a combination of both. This man is the most dishonest person I have ever come across. I am presently attempting to have his license revoked
