The contractor's final quote was steep, much more than his initial estimates. I decided to call Mike Bedwell after all and he came the same evening. When I told him about shortening the wall, Mike said all we needed to do is build the kitchen out to the length of the wall - one of the many advantages of custom cabinets. He gave us a quote on the spot. Instead of getting an anticipated 'sticker shock' figure, it was quite reasonable, especially for what he was offering: a custom-designed kitchen (with no unnecessary structural alteration) complete with installation, and the cabinets would be built out of cherry wood, too. It was a no-brainer - we signed Mike on to do the job.
Our move-in date was looming, so Mike and his crew had a tight turn-around. In spite of this, Mike built a gorgeous kitchen that we are thrilled with. I've been using my kitchen for almost a year now and love everything about it. - the functional design which Mike drew up by hand, and the beautiful cabinets built from high-quality materials, expertly hand-stained by his wife, extending to the ceiling with matching crown molding. The knobs and handles Mike helped us select are well-made and go perfectly with the cabinets; the interior cabinet hardware, hinges and such, are of the same high quality. Mike never cut any corners by using mediocre materials for any part of the project.
Mike designed and built for us all the amenities a modern kitchen can have: a pantry, a spice cabinet, a cookie sheet drawer, two Lazy Susans, an extra wide, two-tiered 'gadget' drawer (which I especially love) for spatulas, vegetable peeler, etc; a microwave cabinet, a broom closet with an outlet inside it for recharging batteries, base cabinets with pull-out shelves and wall cabinets with half-shelves for easy access and deep storage, pull-out garbage can cabinet, matching paneling on the dishwasher, a fridge cabinet, under-cabinet lighting (Mike recommended the electrician who did the work), and gorgeous granite countertops. (Again, Mike recommended the company to use for this feature who did a terrific job using quality granite at a very reasonable price.) Mike even designed and built a cabinet specifically for my big, bulky dehydrator. And, unlike prefab cabinets where an installer strings together a bunch of single boxes, Mike's custom building involves constructing in one piece an entire section of cabinets - much harder to do and requires real skill and craftsmanship. (Please note the first photo. The man pictured is Mike.)
In addition to his artisan craftsmanship, Mike was great to work with. He was very flexible and responsive to whatever requests we had; he worked on weekends in order to make the tight deadline (which impressed us a lot); he promptly returned calls; and he just made things easier for us. For instance, since we didn't have a truck to haul our newly-ordered dishwasher from the warehouse, Mike graciously picked it up for us, saving us a delivery fee. Mike may not have come to work exactly at the time he said he would every single time, but he and his hard-working crew always showed up and would sometimes worked late in order to finish the task of the day to stay on schedule.
Coincidentally, the original contractor we were about to sign a contract with installed a kitchen at my husband's place of work. It's nice enough - the prefab cabinets seem to be of fairly decent quality, but, really, its nothing special. On the other hand, everything about our kitchen is special: beautiful custom-designed, hand-built and stained cabinets of superior craftsmanship with high quality hardware; and its very functional and efficient. Mike is truly an artisan, and we would definitely hire him again. In fact, we plan on doing so for other remodeling projects in our house.
We liked this company so much we had some additional work we wanted an estimate on but they never got back to us with a price or time frame.
These guys do fantastic work, but communication can be an issue.
I would hire Mike again, but only if I had no deadline to have the work finished and if the job did not involve painting.
"The refund has been sent out I would like to thank you for the time that was spent with me I am very sorry we could not work together a lot of things have happened and that is why the work could not be started and the refund was rendered hope all goes well in the future thanks again."
The job was a nightmare.
We found him at a homeshow. We will never trust homeshows again. They do not screen companies."I would like to start by saying that we are a very reliable company that try to do the best we can to plaese every customer we do work for we have tried to please these customers as best we can they are trying to get a free kitchen out of us I'm sorry that we can't afford to do that for them I dont know any company that can I guess we are a small company and some people think we don't count but we have a name to uphold and have worked hard to do so that being said we have already been out to fix a problem that the puppy they had at the time chewed the cabinets and they did have a chip in a door by the sink we didnt question anything came out fixed the problem free of charge. now they are saying the job was done wrong and the specialist they are claiming that we did it wrong I have done this for yrs in other cabinet shops and use the same finish they do I also use same finish on all my jobs in the bathroom and kitchen never have a problem they have been the only ones but never did I refuse to fix it they refuze to allow me to do so, first it was just some doors and they want all money back but we did much more then just paint they had lots of work done so now they want to claim more to see what else they can get (the grout in tile) this is first time we have heard of that. The time they are saying the job was done we were not even intown it has been over a year since job was completed and last fix was made they are saying that it was this year but never the less we will work with people that are willing to work with us on things severel times they have said that the doors need to be fixed we said ok they refused us to look at them and see the problem and want a total refund for the whole job we built all new doors tore out tile retiled countertops, new door nobs, refinished cabinets and any modifications that we did to the existing cabinets I realy dont know how they want all the money back.I would ask that people not think of homeshows in a bad way they have been doing homeshows for yrs can't please everyone.we are a small family business that try to do our best we are human and things happen I would never try to screw or scamm anyone I have a family and company to handle thats not what I'm hear to do I think it is a shame to try to down grade people for money like I said we have never refused to work with them. our business is repeat customers that we have used the same finish on the jobs. Thanks for everything."
"Thanks for the work it was great to work with you all and hope you injoy the new bathroom"
"thanks for the response we hope you love the new look to your already beautiful home."
We did not hear from him so we finally called to find out when he would have the rendering for us. We made an appointment.
He did not show up for this appointment. We called and left a message wondering where he was. He returned the call and we re-scheduled the appointment. Once again he arrived on time.
The rendering was a huge disappointment and not worth $49.00. It did not include any measurements of the cabinets either
height or width. He included a hamper cabinet and drawer combination that could not possibly fit where he put it. He did not bring any photos or a sample of his cabinet doors for us to see. We had told him what wood/finish we were looking for so it would have been very helpful for him to do so.
Again, he quite probably builds beautiful cabinets and for reasonable prices. He seems to be busy with other jobs.
Mike was pleasant.
We would want to speak with other homeowners who have used his services and to see his cabinetry before we would
order his cabinets and ask him to install.
We obtained quotes from other company's based in Williamson County and found them to be as much as three times Mike's price!
We also hired an interior designer to assist with the project that included the kitchen, dining room, and living areas. Mike worked very well with the designer to make changes as we moved along. Mike builds all wood cabinets in his shop and performs most all of the on-site construction. He uses a licensed electrician who is very efficient. The demo and remodel went as planned. Mike was always easy to reach and responsive. Mike worked with the granite folks and plumber to keep the project on time. At the end of the project Mike met all of our expectations and we are very happy with his work.
The best part of this project was the value of the final product. Mike is a small business guy working to make a name and build his business. While the "Handy Mike" name may not impress your Williamson County neighbors, I can assure you his work and price will!
