It was told that the work will start in two weeks after signing the contract and expected to be completed in two weeks. The work did start after a month since signing the contract and completed in six months.

They did a great job and I was very pleased with them. I even referred them to a few friends.

Rick Riikola provided estimate and oversaw installation of skylight. During installation I made some modifications to the job and additional charges for changes were reasonable. (I added drywall and stamping around inside of finished skylight). Installation was professionally done, workers were courteous and cleanup after installation was performed. Final results was terrific and final price was as agreed. This is second job Riikola Construction has performed for us (they built a shed in 2013). Based on their work to date, I would not hesitate to recommend them.

After receiving several estimates by other companies on Angieslist, my wife told me that Riikola had done some work on a house across the street. I remembered the work he had done and was impressed, so I made the call. His estimate was as about the same as the lowest estimate I had previously received. Since I had seen his work, I made the choice.
The task at hand was to build a slightly larger deck than with a new, additional (reinforced) section for a hot tub, stain the deck, and run the electrical service for the tub. I'm mechanically inclined, but I'm not much of an designer. Rick explained to me what we needed to do and quickly gained my trust. He offered me several options on design, such as not angling corners, how to align the hot tub, and the types of lighting to use. He offered pictures of other jobs to reinforce his suggestions.
Considering it was February, I wasn't in a hurry to get the work done. I told Rick they could do the work at their convenience. But then I bought the hot tub and everything changed. With the hot tub coming, all of a sudden I had to give them pretty aggressive deadlines. Rick organized the framers, painters, and the electricians and (somehow) got everything finished before the tub arrived.
The framers: The framers completed the construction and it looked great... or so I thought. The crew lead explained to me that he was not happy with the alignment of some of the boards they had installed. I would have NEVER noticed this. They spent several hours realigning the boards so they would look perfect.
The electrician: did what I needed. He ran a 240 service for the tub and a 120 standard outlet for whatever I need to plug in. He knew what he was doing and the job looks great. There's not much else to say.
The painters: It turns out that they are my cousins...who I'd never met before. I made their lives most miserable. Due to the hot tub deadline and the weather, they had to come out and stain only the portion of the deck where the tub was to be installed. Then when the weather cleared up, they finished the job. I appreciate the scheduling that they and Riikola did in order to meet my surprise deadlines.
The contractor - Rick Riikola: He's a perfectionist. If he notices something that he doesn't like, he either gets it fixed, or fixes it himself. One thing he did was pick up a pile trash that the framer's helper missed when he came to load up after the job. Another thing was the he (Rick) was not happy with the handrails (again, I didn't notice). He had some additional boards cut and either installed them himself or had the framers come back out and install them. He reviewed every inch of the deck to make sure it was perfect.
I gave Rick my overall plans, but didn't really address the cosmetic features. Considering he is the expert, I just told him to do it right. The lights he picked were awesome (and not the most expensive ones). He also suggested that I pick aluminum balusters instead of wood. That makes a huge difference in the appearance of the deck. I'm glad he recommended them.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the deck. The amount I paid matched the estimate and there were no surprises.
We haven't used our previous deck for years because it was old and in bad shape. Right now, I'm happier with my deck than the rest of my house. I can't wait for warmer weather.
I plan to build a front porch on my house at some future point. Rick will be the first (and probably only) contractor I call.

We liked that they are local. Our neighbor referred them. They were easy to get a hold of and came quickly. The experience didn't start to great. They didn't say when they were coming. The roofer showed up and started throwing material off of the roof. They didn't put down anything. After we brought up our problems, they corrected it. I have two teenage girls that found extremely uncomfortable. The guys were always leering at them. I think it's more than the owner of the company could handle. He can't control the workers. We like that they finished the roof in a timely manner. They did leave a pile of stuff on top of our roof. The father of the owner came out and made sure that everything was finished. I pointed out the pile and he had it taken care of. They didn't mind working with us without knowing what the insurance was going to pay. We really appreciated that.

I met with Riikola to have repairs and improvements made to my front porch. After receiving an estimate for the work, I authorized Riikola to proceed to pump up the concrete slab, fill cracks, stain the concrete, and install a front step. An approximate date for the work was provided. The subcontractor who was to pump up the slab had an unexpected opening and that work was done quickly. Pumping up the concrete slab was done successfully and it was a good job. Since this part was completed early, Riikola asked for partial payment, which I provided. Then Riikola had concerns about how to best stain the concrete and wanted to talk to a Sherwin Williams representative and show him the job. I think he had trouble scheduling discussions the the stain representative. I wanted a quality job and appreciated Riikola's attitude of wanting to resolve any concerns before proceeding with the work. Then nothing -- Riikola stopped responding to my phone messages and my e-mails. I never heard from him again and quit trying to contact him. On the plus side, I was pleased with the work that was done and only paid for work that was completed.
Response from RIIKOLA CONSTRUCTION COMPANY
"My goal is for all to be satisfied at completion of job. After the concrete was raised there were a few more cracks. I was concerned about the appearance of the stain/concrete fill or caulk after completion. I thought we had discussed. It is difficult for me to do something that I feel improper, it always backfires. I believe I had suggested removing/replacing concrete sidewalk which would cost a little more but the owner would have been entirely satisfied. I apologize for the misunderstanding, it was not intentional."

Work began when promised and was completed as promised. Some items specified in a written specification were ignored and the contractor had to be reminded to include them and a couple items were never included. Other than that, he had ideas to save money and helped us stay under budget while not compromising quality or ascetics. The subcontractors he uses are very good and were very easy to work with.
Response from RIIKOLA CONSTRUCTION COMPANY
"Your compliments are wonderful. I try very hard to make all happy and it feels good when I do. Thank you very much."
