Josh came out to give me an estimate for moving. We were only moving 2 blocks, but I have a lot of stuff, and I can't lift the objects by myself. So, Josh comes out, looks through my entire house, and estimates it will take 8-12 hours to move (at $159/hr for 4 men + a truck), and offers additional packing help (if needed) at $39/hr. I think this is fair. So, Tuesday comes and I ask for 2 men to help us pack. They spend about 10 hours packing, which we believe will enable us to move in 1 day (8-12 hours). Wednesday they loaded and unloaded the truck twice, but they only took about 1/2 of our stuff. Plus, they only had 3 people most of hte day, the fourth guy only worked a few hours, and we ended the day with only 2 people. With it being packed, I expect to get much more done. They say they'll finish it the next day (Thursday). Thursday they only moved one truckload, and it took all day. They only had 3 people, and one of them apparently was sleeping part of the time (more on that later!). After 2 full days, my house still had a lot of stuff inside, PLUS my entire garage (which was stuffed with packed boxes). Even worse, the placement of furniture and boxes made my new house unliveable. Boxes weren't marked, were in the wrong rooms, and the rooms were blocked by the placement of everything. I had to spend hours just moving the stuff in my new house just to get into some of the rooms! I spent Friday figuring out what they did wrong. They should've loaded the furniture into the new house FIRST, then placed boxes on/around the furniture, so we'd have a way to unpack stuff. Saturday they come over for day four. We get the truck loaded, and we get everything to the new house (except for garbage, unused boxes, etc.). I get notified that he thinks he's performed $4500 worth of work, but I remind him that we only have 4 guys briefly (maybe 4 hours or so), so he lowers his price to $3500. I then remind him that one of his "packers" broke 3 of my lamps while "packing", and then broke some other smaller things. So, Josh settles for $3250 (about double what he estimated, and I planned on). This week my wife goes looking for her pain pills (related to kidney stones), and notices a full bottle of pills was emptied. Now we know why they were moving so slowly on Thursday! I tried to reach Josh, but he didn't return my call. So, I'm going to the police department to file a complaint, in hopes that I can get the bottle of pills replaced to help my poor wife! Another note: One of the movers confided in me that he gets these guys from Craigslist. He told me he had a regular crew of guys that he uses, not hired help off the Internet! I hope I never move again, but if I do, I will use someone else. Also, one of the movers left 2 shirts in my dryer. Ugh.
Description of Work: They did 1 day of packing (quote rate: $39/hr for 2 guys), and 3 days of moving (quoted rate was $159 for 4 guys plus the truck). Original estimate was for 8-12 hours of moving. Actual time charged was about 30 hours. We never had a full day with 4 guys. People either left early, never showed, or slept (more on that later).
