Overall experience was terrible. Company gave estimate far above stated budget and seemed to lose interest when declined more expensive options. Took over 3 months to finally get plants and several of them were dying. Took several more weeks to get replacement after calling multiple times. Tried to get company to honor their "guarantee" of replacing plants within year and that was a sham. Was told by new ownership that they were working to repair poor work but found that it was just as bad. They finally replaced part of the plants 12 weeks later after calling frequently but they put in wrong plant. Now can't even get a response. Reviews at the time were good on Angie's list but my experience was horrible and a waste of good money.

A year ago, when I first contacted them, they were relatively prompt in responding and informative in discussing our yard and garden.  They connected me to a landscape architect who was also prompt, courteous, and professional.  Before engaging the architect, though, we asked Grassy Roots for a rough estimate of the cost of the project; they responded that it would likely be closer to $10K, and certainly not in the $20K range.  However, the final estimate, based on the plans was between $20-25,000.  We then had to discuss how to approach the project a bit at a time and engaged them in treating our yard.  It later turned out that their plan for the yard was not going to be effective, so we cancelled that.  We were able to have them plant some monkey grass in the front.  I then tried to contact them in the spring about mowing our yard and weeding the monkey grass patch, with little response.  Their answer was that it was a busy time of year.  I finally gave up and hired someone else for the lawn maintenance.
One of their staff was reliable and he came out to evaluate the trees for trimming and sent the subcontractors out for that part of the project.  As the summer went on and I was trying to decide what to do about our project, he reached out to me for a meeting, and that's when I learned that there had been a big change in leadership and staffing.  He was much more prompt and responsive in communication, so I was willing to give them another chance.  He provided me with a new plan for our yard and we discussed the next steps.  As it was summer, though, we were waiting until the weather cooled off to do any more planting.
Unfortunately, by the time it got to be October, and time to do more planting, Marshall, the reliable person, was gone.  When I reached out again, I received the same kind of communication as before--slow responses to emails--promises to follow through which didn't happen.  I have learned from previous experience and have hired someone else.  Grassy Roots may have been a good provider in the past, but certainly not in my experience.

The project started well when Rice Pierce and his point man Bruce were running the show. Very professional and responsive.
The project dragged, but weather played a role in much of that, and our job was relatively small compared with the company's  other responsibilities. Any threat of rain meant that no work would be done that day.
Apparently, Rice sold his interest in the company, and new management took over. I won't belabor the details, but that's when phone calls were not returned, appointment times to detail what remained to complete were not kept, and, ultimately, our job was never finished. Many plants and flowers were never placed. Soaker hoses did not work properly, and several plants died. These were supposed to be replaced if they died within one year of planting, but, of course that never happened. Ultimately, the representatives for Grassy Roots simply ignored my calls for resolution for all these outstanding issues. We are left within an unfinished yard that is little improved $40,000.00 later. We will always regret that Grassy Root's reviews on Angie's List were so favorable.

We have used this service happily for a couple of years, but at some point this summer they brought on an entirely new crew that did not do good work for us.  Ran over our neighbor's plants as well as our own, left the gate open so that the dog got out (twice), left bald spots on the lawn.  Last year's crew was better.  Management was quick to apologize when I complained and explained that they were training a new crew but problems persisted.  After they left the gate open a second time and I had to chase our new dog around the neighborhood I decided to find another service.

We appreciated Grassy Roots' willingness to take on our relatively small job that was passed over by many other hardscape companies. They offered a detailed estimate, and were accessible for updates as we waited for the job to be done. Once started, the job was completed in good time. We were very impressed with the quality of the work, their professionalism, and how they went "above and beyond" to do the job right. Even when it became apparent that the initial estimate did not account for necessary drainage, etc, they were willing to honor the initial estimate and did a fair bit of extra work without additional charge. We were very impressed, and will definitely use them again.

A landscape architect provided a draft landscaping plan for our small back yard. It took a month or two for the plan to be completed. it had some good ideas but we were not in a position to execute all of them.

mowing is fine.  I had to ask them to switch to use the push mower over the riding mower to minimize the grass getting into the flower beds.  The weed eaters/strimmers have chewed up parts of my siding near the foundation.

They were terrible. I started the job way back in March and I am still not done with it. They are so ignorant about plants. They sent me some wrong plants and I sent them back. They are nice people but incompetent. They have not turned back to receive the last payment since the work is not completed. They don’t switch nurseries to get the right plants. They stick to ones which they like and delay the whole job.

There were some delays in getting started due to weather and confirming
our property line, but they maintained contact and kept us up to date on
the progress while the main job was in progress. However, they told us
the job was finished and invoiced us for the final payment despite
several plants being missing.  They did tell us that they would install
the plants once they got them in.  However, I have had to continually
call and email them to find out what was happening with the installation
of the missing plant material.  I have had them tell me a few times
that they would install the plants as they come in, but they have yet to
install the original plants they promised or replace the plants that
their guarantee promised to replace.  We were also hoping to work with
them to solve a drainage problem that didn't get resolved with the
original design, but since they are not responsive to installing the
plants we have already paid for, we do not want to pay them to do any
more work. They started out being very responsive and professional,
however, they took our money and have not finished the work.  Our yard
looks much better, but almost 8 months after paying for it, it is still
incomplete.

"This was a brief period of management transition in which communication was lacking. However, I corrected the issue with the customer in a one on one meeting. I explained to her that we could not replace any plant material that perished due to acts of nature or failure to properly maintain. I was asked to provide an estimate for additional work. I did so and after the initial contact, I never heard back from the customer."

.They did some fall bargaining clean up.  They were very good. They were pretty responsive. They are more natural and don't use too many chemicals to kill weeds

As above.  All done by friendly professionals.  We are still getting used to service prices in Nashville - much higher than our previous home in Texas - which is the reason I awarded Grassy Roots a "B" instead of "A."  They are great, very responsive and do good work.  I'll recommend them to friends.

They were adequate. Whenever I pay someone to do lawn services, I would usually expect that trimming the bushes would come along with that but they didn't include the trimming part. They gave a separate work quote other than the lawn maintenance quote. The bush trimming and the hedge cleanup alone was $100. Otherwise, $45 every two weeks is good.

Waste of money and time.  Could've already had landscaping finished by the time they finally got back to us with the design.   $31K quote poorly presented and executed.

I am extremely pleased with Grassy Roots Lawn Service. There was a time when they had neglected to weedeat the weeds that had gron through cracks in the patio but as soon as I brought it to their attention the problem was corrected and was never overlooked again. They invoice via email and accept electronic payments. I highly recommend them.

He was very nice and very informative but I didn't end up buying the package. I think it's an excellent value for what they did but if I had follow through and done the things they suggested, it was just far more expensive than I would have wanted to do. He contacted me almost immediately and he works in conjunction with a landscape designer and Grassy Roots is actually a nursery, he plant stuff but he works with a separate guy who is a designer. He came out not long after I purchased the deal and then a week later he came up with a nice design but then when I got the estimate, on planting things that he talked about, it was more than I'd like to pay. It was a good deal, I would have wanted to tweak the design, I would have wanted to use the exactly as he drew it but there's nothing strange about that, I mean the design is something new and you don't actually get it right the first time but it was a very nice design and a very good value. For the $99, I got more than my money's worth. He was courteous, prompt and everything was exactly what I paid for. Actually I didn't pay as much as what he did is worth and he's probably losing money on the deal because I didn't choose to go any further with it, but it's of no reflection on him. It is difficult because it's not a finished deal when he comes out and talks to you. If you signed up for a photograph or a maid service or something like that, they come out, do the job and then they leave but this, he came out and did the job that I paid for but the plan is not done. The price for what he did was excellent. I think the quality of what he did for me was excellent and if I wanted to do that again, I would definitely use him again.

We appreciate the quality of the design and the detail included.  This was a preliminary plan only but came with a breakdown of each phase of the plan.  The professional plan was going to cost us $350 if we decided to go forward with the work.  Implementation of the plan would cost us $62K+, much to high for the value of our property.  We will look for a less expensive landscape company to do the work or discuss ways to reduce the price significantly with Grassyroots.  They were both courteous and professional.
Response from Grassy Roots Landscapes LLC
"We are grateful to receive nice words about our work. The plan we created for this customer was amazing!  It included a custom pergola made from Western Red Cedar and built on custom stone pillars which are stunning!  There was a new patio with a custom sitting wall and a custom fire pit.  There are new planting beds in both the front and back yards, and lots of new plant material.  Planting beds were all upgraded with loads of great mushroom compost to make future fertilizing unnecessary and to ensure the long-term health and beauty of the plants.  The yard and all beds and plant material are protected with a new irrigation system. Truly, this is a plan for a memorable yard and landscape! Preliminary plans are designed to allow a client to imagine everything they might want for their yard and landscape. In a normal situation, a client would take the preliminary plan and then make changes to fit their budget and desires. A final plan is then produced that represents exactly what a customer wants within their budget. We complete our work in accordance with the final plan. Considering the preliminary plan for this client, there are numerous ways to minimize cost. For example, using wooden posts versus custom pillars on the pergola saves plenty of money; eliminating compost from the beds saves money; modifying the patio/fire pit/and sitting wall saves money. There is always a way to achieve what someone wants while maintaining quality in a way that ensures the long-term viability of a landscape investment."
