I employed their services at the recommendation of TVA for a blower door test and to have them install knee wall insulation in my attic (also TVA recommended). They wouldn't give me any pricing information on improvements until I paid for the test and stated that the money paid for the test could go towards improvements. A week after my test they gave me the results and the recommendations. However, I was surprised to find that items were grouped into packages starting around $3,000 and up to $25,000. The rest showed that my home was pretty air tight but that they could do some improvements by installing better knee wall insulation, a ventilation fan in the bathroom, sealing the attic door, and other attic sealing. Having obtained other bids for the knee wall insulation, I was surprised to learn from Erik that they would not do individual improvements but only packages--it was all or nothing. The package pricing is ambiguous and as I glanced over the basic package, the only two items of significant value were the knee wall insulation and installing the bathroom fan. Other things like "printed color invoice" and "basic air sealing package" don't carry much weight for me especially when I was told my home was already pretty tight.
In the end I couldn't use them for any actual work since their minimum was close to $3000. Even with money I put down for the test, they were simply too expensive. In the end, I ended up hiring another TVA recommended company to do the knee wall insulation for $500. If I could roll back the clock, I wouldn't have paid almost $400 for a test that took less than hour--especially when I found out that other TVA-approved companies will do the blower door test for $100-$150.
Again, they were friendly and pleasant to deal with but their prices are as high as the sky.
"Hi [Member name removed], We greatly appreciate the feedback about our services and are happy to hear that you found us to be professional, friendly and timely. We also appreciate you letting us know that our pricing structure was a bit confusing and that the value of our services or the scope of our recommendations may not have been communicated clearly. Feedback like this helps our company continue to improve and we plan to use it as we review our proposal structure. As to why we don’t offer piecemeal pricing on individual services, such as your kneewall insulation, we have found after almost a decade in this business that spot-repairing insulation in a home offers very little help in the way of energy savings and is often a waste of money for homeowners. We have our customers’ best interests in mind when we run our in-depth tests of homes to determine the best plan for lowering energy consumption and increasing home comfort. This is almost always a mix of various services, including air sealing, (one of the most effective energy-saving upgrades), where the whole of the services is greater than the sum of their parts. We apologize for having not done a better job of explaining this to you. Thanks again for your feedback. We strive to be the best company we can, and hope to be able to serve you in the future. Thanks! E3 INNOVATE"
A walk-through of the house was the first thing done, locating HVAC vents, return air grills, etc. Then the front door opening was fitted with a canvas cover that had a fan in it and electronic measuring equipment attached to it. A similar device was fitted over the downstairs HVAC return grill and all the vents were taped off with easily removable tape to isolate the duct system. They performed two main tests with this equipment to determine the leakage from the whole house and also from the duct system. This test was repeated for the upstairs system as well. A radon test kit was left at my house which I returned through the mail after it had been in my house the required time - about five days.
A thermal camera was employed to spot leaks of air from the outside to inside; these leaks showed up clearly. Many of the things that can be improved are able to be performed by a handy homeowner, but more complicated improvements will require professionals.
Erik and Stephan answered all my questions and spent the time necessary to do so. They are very well informed and educated in the energy conservation business. I received a report in the mail plus Erik and another technician came back about a week later to go over various possible improvements that could be made to improve the performance of my house as it relates to energy consumption and comfort. E3 Innovate LLC, honored the Angie's List Coupon for an additional HVAC system to be measured. I am very satisfied with the value of this service.
Clearly this wasn't an inexpensive project and we went with E3 because of the recommendation of others who have used them in the past and been happy with their work and service. We also consulted with a family member who is a structural engineer and were able to pick and choose the items of the plan which were most important to us at this time.
We would absolutely use E3 Innovate for future work and recommend them to others.
"Thank you, {removed member name}. We appreciate your insight and enjoyed working with you tremendously. Please don't hesitate to reach out if we can be of any further assistance."
The only negative is that when they were carting stuff up into my attic and down, they didn't put anything under the ladder and scratched the living h*** out of my wood floor where the ladder pulls down. Boys will be boys I suppose, but next time throw a rubber pad under those things for the next homeowner.
Hopefully we'll get a chance to work together again. The plan I put together is a 5 year plan, so there you go. :)
"Dear [member name removed], Thank you for your honest feedback. We have used this information to ensure that our field team provides even better care and protection. We trust you are enjoying the home performance upgrades we have provided. We look forward to hearing from you in the future."
They are prompt, professional, and do not try to sell you on things that will not provide long term benefit. I would recommend them without reservation. Even moreso if you are looking for an ethical, environmentally friendly company.
I selected the services I wanted performed and they scheduled a crew to take two days to complete the jobs. This company used their own employees. For my work, they did not sub-contract anything. The person who did the original testing stopped by several times and was available by phone at all times. However, the crew was so competent and quality-minded they required little supervision. The spray foaming and blown-in insulation were pretty straightforward and the results were as I expected. The crawl space drainage system, however, was much more involved than we originally thought. Despite the extra work required to complete the project, at no time did I feel like they were cutting corners to get done with such an unpleasant job.
The entire crew was courteous, competent, and hard-working. They were also well-educated and articulate. It was a pleasure having them work on my home. I would not hesitate to call on them again.
If I had to come up with a complaint, it would be that they were not as careful with my carpet as I would have wished. They could have worn booties over their shoes, for example. Even though they put down plastic runners to protect the carpet, they managed to get some dirt in a couple of spots that did not immediately come up when they vacuumed before they left. So I spent about 5 minutes doing a little extra cleaning, but that was it. Not a real complaint for me, but I realize that would bother some people.
All in all, I was very happy with the services I got from E3.
