We should have known there was a problem when a few weeks into the project, Jeff came to us and stated that the basement framing and drywall was not included in the bid, even though his bid clearly stated it was. Knowing that he was well below what the job should cost, we agreed to sign off on the change order and pay an additional approx $4500. This was a mistake on our part to fall for the bait and switch pricing when we should have fired him at that time.Jeff frustrated our other trade contractors by working on items such as cabinets and deck early on when he should have been framing and prepping for electric and plumbing. Jeff later blamed those other trades for his being behind. As stated above, Jeff was given a 25 page document detailing every piece of work to be done at this property down to the fixtures and paint to be used. All was to be completed to code and required to pass inspection. The deck stairs that Jeff built did not pass inspection which we have had to fix after he was let go from the job. Drywall in the garage and basement were not completed to code. Only 2 of the 4 windows were replaced. The scope of work document specified an eggshell finish paint. Not only was the wrong color used but much of the house was painted with a flat finish and then had touch up areas done with eggshell. This meant that after Jeff was asked to leave, we had to repaint 2/3 of a 3000sf house. Jeff had his assistant do a roof patch which then had to be redone as the patched area leaked. He had 2 doors hung on new rooms that had large gaps on the side when the door was closed. There were multiple large holes on the ceiling. Jeff fixed 2 but left 3 others. Jeff hung about 3/4 of the needed drywall in the garage then quit and moved on to another task. Jeff sealed the wet side of the basement walls but missed areas which left of with continued leaking. When hanging drywall, Jeff covered outlets and the main water shut off for the house. He removed light fixtures which were to stay. We ended up purchasing lots of materials for use at this property. Some of those materials were used and other were taken off site by Jeff assuming to be used on other jobs. Jeff was to create a wine rack in the space above the microwave. It was so ugly and he did nothing to cover the wiring in that space that we had to remove it and build cabinet doors. One of the early things that Jeff completed was to refinish the wood stair case. Unfortunately with all of the construction happening on the second floor, you would never know that it was done and they now have to be refinished again. This is only a partial list of the problems left by Jeff's poor quality.
He has very bad time management and does not work through tasks in a manner that makes any logical sense. He would arrive at the jobsite most days mid-morning between 10-11am and often left around 4pm. Jeff would often tell us in the afternoon when he was leaving that he was going for dinner and would be back to work a few more hours later in the day. Since we live 5 minutes away from this house, we would go by in the evening and not once that he said he would be back was he ever there. Around mid Nov, because of the lateness of the project, my husband started doing work at the site. He was there to monitor progress and help get things done which were being neglected. Jeff spent a great deal of his time blaming others for his poor management or quality.
We have a policy to pay as work is finished. Jeff knew we were short on time as this house needed to be listed with our realtor. He demanded to be paid some of his final draw in advance of work in order to have his helper there working on the weekend. So when Jeff was asked to leave the job, he was actually by our account paid ahead of work by about $1000. When he was asked to leave, he threaten to place a lien on the property and take us to court for breach of contract. He demanded and additional $284.00 before they would sign a lien waiver. We agreed just to get him to go away. When he came for the check, Amanda demanded we sign a statement that all work was done satisfactorily or again they would take us to court. I told her it was not and I would not sign and offered to walk her around and show her why. She then brought Jeff in who again threatened court. My husband signed under duress just to get rid of them so we could move on and fix this mess with honest professional contractors. It left me feeling as though we were extorted since they knew we needed to sell this house and could not have delays due to court or liens.
We have spent thousands of extra dollars fixing and redoing this company's work. We share this info so other homeowners are not taken like we were. We have since heard from a friend who also hired Jeff for a small bathroom job, that the job was done poorly and that he would not respond to requested to have problems fixed. I feel bad since Jeff would not have done that job if it weren't for him working for us.
"Thank you valued customer, It was a pleasure doing buisness with you, and look forward to hearing from you again!"
