The second project did not get beyond the design phase because I paid a few thousand dollars for designs, went to meet with Mr. Halbert and the landscape architect to see the designs, and took them home--thinking that they were for review and there would be an opportunity to make any needed changes. I had been asked to pay 50% of the proposed fee in advance, as I had for the landscape project. The project proposal (for the designs) included a list of things Mincheys would do, and all of them had not been done, but when I returned from my meeting I discovered a final invoice for the remainder of the entire amount in my email inbox. Even more disappointing, after I had time to really take a good look at the designs, I realized that no one had really listened to what I needed/wanted, because the whole idea was to add to my driveway at the garage area and give me, UPS and FedEx drivers, and others room to turn around without driving over my yard. When I got home and looked at the plans and measurements, it was clear that before anyone could get to that area they'd have to drive over some expensive landscaping that had been proposed in the plan. The and quot;parking areaand quot; had been moved about 20 feet from the front corner of my garage, with the intervening area being proposed for landscaping. My privacy fence was supposed to be removed--at least in the area near the garage--and replaced with a wrought-iron fence. But in doing so, the design called for a set-back area in the middle of that fence for my garbage can. The net effect was that the first thing anyone would see when driving down my driveway would be the garbage can. I reviewed the planting design, and realized that many of the bushes and plants that had been proposed for the area near the front of the house were shade-loving plants, but that area gets so much afternoon sun that I haven't been able to grow anything there unless it really loves the sun. On paper, it looked really nice--but it wasn't practical, and it didn't address the needs that it was intended to address. There was no proposal for how the grading would be done, nothing to show me how drainage had been taken into consideration. I thought that was coming, until I received that invoice and realized that Mincheys considered the job done. Ultimately, I didn't pay the additional fee because I didn't get a completed project. I didn't get a refund of the money I had already paid, either (which actually amounted to well more than 50% because I had adjusted the scope of the project and left out the covered back deck after I paid 50% of the original proposed price for the whole thing), and I can't use the designs because so many changes would need to be made. I've hesitated to contact someone else, because I thought Mincheys was one of the best in the area and I don't relish going through this again--but in a few weeks I'll try again, and hopefully I can find someone who will do this right.
Their crews do a nice job of basic landscaping, and if I hadn't had the bad experience with the design project, I would very likely have called them again for landscaping projects.
An evergreen bush they planted had some damaged branches. I asked Wally about this. When he came out to get the last check he agreed that the bush had been damaged. He offered to come back and trim it, which he never did. I trimmed it, but I think he should have replaced it.
To me, this was expensive work, but we did get three other bids. Minchey's was very close to the other two.
Walt was very nice to work with, but I do think they should have gladly replaced the damaged bush and we should not have had to call them to get the work started. I would use them again, but they would not be the first place I would call, or the only place I would call.
