Mr Meeks' love for stone and what he can do with it was immediately apparent when he looked the job over at bid time. His bid was on a par with his competitors', but it was the look in his eye when surveying the arts-and-crafts exterior that won him the job -- you could tell he wanted to match the 1924 craftsmen at their trade. And he did. The teardown phase had to be coordinated with the concrete workers (a separate company) and several onslaughts of rainy weather. He preserved all the old stone in neat piles in out-of-the-way parts of the yard and was careful to minimize damage to the landscaping. But for the rain the process would have been completed within the estimated two days. The real fun began after the concrete had been poured. The stones were of varied sizes and shapes but Mr Meeks more than met the challenge of fitting them together to match the original style and dimensions, and even the original mortar thickness and tooling (see photos). Again, rain forced several postponements of the work -- what had been estimated at 2-1/2 weeks stretched to almost 4 weeks. He worked diligently and efficiently but it was clear that he was more interested in doing quality work than in slapping things together quickly. Both of us were quite happy with the result of his efforts. Neighbors who had watched the process told me, "It looks like nothing has changed except that the porch floor's not broken now."
