About us

Contact Roofing by RLI at (865) 670-7663 in Knoxville, TN, for a roofing contractor handling shingles, gutters, sky lights, roof replacements and repairs. Roofing By RLI is committed to providing the best products and workmanship to our customers. We back all of our roofs with a written warranty, not just a line on a website that says we stand behind our work. Because we have factory trained and manufacturer authorized installers, we can even offer extended manufacturer warranties. Ask about the warranty on the products you’re offered before you make a decision on the type of roof you want. Be sure you understand how each warranty works for you and against you. Understand the difference in a “true” warranty and “prorated” warranty from the manufacturer and don’t be fooled by a so called “Lifetime Warranty.” A true “Lifetime Warranty” is not “prorated” at any time during the warranty period.

Since my last review of this company on 10/3/18 I was contacted by Steve, the owner of RLI, and they immediately started to address my work and concerns. I wanted to update that review. They have now completed all the work and I am basing my latest review solely on the recent work they did for me and not my experience over the last several months. Whatever the previous issue, Steve made sure it was resolved. They completed the work in the manner in which I had previously come to expect, and I gave them an A in all categories. Many companies jump right to replacing everything, but RLI has always been good to help us find ways to save money as exampled in adding the gutter miters instead of replacing all the guttering. They approach the job and the price in a fair and professional manner and they always stay with their original quote even when the job ends up requiring more time than originally anticipated. Any revisions or changes are those I have requested as work progressed. I once again look forward to a long relationship with RLI as they can also provide many construction services other than roofing. They have done other excellent jobs for us in the past and with excellent attention to detail.

Beginning in October 2011, just three months after the roof was put on, we began having leaks and the guttering pulling loose from the house.  Since then, there has been two to three leaks a year in the roof (the first bedroom, the foyer [twice], the kitchen multiple times and the dining room multiple times).  The gutter has come loose from the house twice before and has again now.  Last year was the first year there was only one leak.  This morning, 12/29/15, I awoke to yet another, new leak in the roof in my dining room.

Since the warranty is held by a second party, and has been sold since the original work was done, finding who I am supposed to call to report these leaks takes days.  The last person I talked to at RSA said NONE of the prior work/complaints had transferred over to their company so there is no record with the current warranty company concerning the issues I've had.

On 12/29, I spoke to someone at RSA and they are trying to get a contractor to my home to look a the leak and repair.  I also called RLI and left a message concerning the leak.  The owner, Steve Holley, came to my home the afternoon of 12/29 and fixed the gutters and sent a crew the next day to reinforce what he had done.  He also came back and worked on the area that was leaking.  He has been responsive and helpful and that has made this episode much easier for me.  I finally feel like someone genuinely wants this fixed .  It will be a while before we know for certain the repair has fixed the leak (need more rain) but I am hopeful this will correct all the problems I've had.

We were very pleased with the quality and professionalism of Save Haley and his crew. They were able to solve a leaking chimney problem that have eluded three other companies.

The experience, professionalism, of David the salesmen, Chris the superintendent and the men who did the work where far above all the other bids that I have received. RLI worked around my schedule and all the rain days that we had. There priceing was competitive, but what sold me was David the salesmen. He answered all my questions with very prompt responces, he explained and described how they where going to perform the work. Such as how they where going to protect my plants and use of a blower. They covered all my plants and movied my outside furniture. My roof was a 2 day job but how they performed and quality of ther workmanship was over the top. They swept with a magnet on wheels to pick up loose nails that have fallen. Not only once but at lease 5 times. They went around the house and checked all plants of any debris that wasn't caught by there plastic. Rich and David both came out to check on the progress and asked me if I had any concerns that I might have. To me, this is what makes a first class company, I can see and tell there methods and there concerns about my concerns because I have just retired after 40 years from the construction industry. Price is important but how they performed, there quality of work and there follow up was very important to me. All my concers where meet and I felt at ease.

Steve came to give an estimate on the roof in a timely manner. We weren't quite ready to have the work done then, we had just wanted an idea of how much it would be. When we called back 6 months later when we had a leak, he came back immediately and put plastic sheeting over the area without charging us.
When they did the roof, the foreman found several things that had been done incorrectly before and they were very patient in waiting for me to decide what to do about it. very patient.....because it took me a while.
They worked quickly and I was impressed with the workers and felt very safe around them.
When they did the gutters, we had to replace some of the fascia (?) board and they let us do that ourselves to save money and they were willing to come back a different day to finish up to give us time to get that completed.
They worked with our insurance company by submitting all claims, and when the mortgage company insisted on signatures and paperwork from them and us, they took care of all of that for us.
I loved working with them and would hire them again if I need to.

They did a good job. We had a hail storm which is what caused the problem and also made all the roofing companies in the area very busy. All things considered it was a really tough time for everyone in this trade of work and I believe they did a great job.

Showed up when they said they would . Owner came to our home 3 times, which I was impressed with. They also came back after the job was finished to correct a flashing issue that cosmetically did not please me.
It was nice that they allowed me to pay with a credit card.

We were very satisfied with them. I liked the team spirit. They all seemed to know what to do. They worked quickly and efficiently. I think their price was reasonable. We are happy with the quality of work and we have a warranty. They were here when they said they would and they walked out when the job was done. They kept in touch with us and we were very satisfied.

I will never do work with this company again. On two occasions the president told me that before they replace the gutters hey would replace some of the fascia board that needed work. Told me it would only cost a few hundred dollars extra. That was in May. When they finally replaced the roof in October between the roof and the gutter work he sent a subcontractor out to price the fascia board. The subcontractor wanted $1800. This was never put into the insurance estimate. When I talked to Steve Holly about it and our discussions he called me a liar and said he never would have agreed to do the fascia work. He told me he was loosing roofers left and right and to take the time to do the fascia work would not be profitable. I told him not to come back to do the gutters and that I would find someone else. Completely disgusted with their response to my concerns.

I was certainly not pleased with them. They put smaller gutters on and they just didn't do a good job. I asked them to call back and someone came out and he was supposed to return and he never did return. I was just disappointed with them. They sent me a warranty for the roofing and they had the name and address wrong. The second guy that came out took the paperwork with him so he could change the information and I never got the paperwork back so I have no warranty on the roof. I called them and I waited and waited. I finally called and asked for someone else because the first man wasn't going to do anything. That's when he discovered the warranty had the wrong name. I don't know if the price was fair or not since every insurance company is different. I don't know how to judge but they took the money. In all fairness I can't give you a true rating about the roof because I don't know anything about roofs. I was very disappointed about the gutters because if it rains really hard, it overshoots the gutter; that's my main concern about that. I'm concerned that it's going to rot the house because it's not hitting the gutter correctly. I don't know if it was their own people they used or if they used a subcontractor for the gutters. I called the second man out because I wasn't getting anything done; as it turns out, I still didn't get anything done. They did come out pretty quickly to do the work but they're not reliable and I still don't have the warranty. When I sell the house, I won't be able to prove there is a new roof. I don't think they were very professional or they would have followed through with all that and they would have corrected the gutter. I would not use them again.

Things went very well thru the roof and gutter replacement work that began in the fall of 2011. I worked with Jim Blair, a project manager for RLI who was courteous and responsive, at least initially. He assured me there was no problem with RLI completing all the work items shown on the Insurance Company adjuster's list which I provided him or with his obtaining any additional funds from the Company needed to complete all the work. He advised me that he would handle the communications with my insurance company concerning all supplemental claims and obtain additional amounts of funds necessary to complete all the work that was listed on the adjuster's statement that included not only roof and gutter replacement, but also the replacement of window screens, painting of damaged window shutters, and front door. ( I had filed the initial hail damage claim with the insurance company and had already received one check from the company). In addition to the items listed by the adjuster, he said that he would alsoobtain addtional money from the insurance company that was needed to replace the damaged garage doors and to pressure wash the side of the house where the paint was marred by hailstones.
After the roof and gutter replacement work was finished, Jim Blair contacted me and said he would like to close out this aspect of the work before the end of the calendar year 2011. We met and I agreed to pay him for this portion of the work. He accepted a check on 12/15/11 and said that RLI would complete the remainder of the work aforedescribed after January 1, 2012, as the weather permitted. The statement from RLI that he gave me also contained the statement at the bottom that and quot; These amounts are for workcompleted thru 12/15/11. The balance of the work to be completed in the Spring.and quot;
Since the time I made th 12/15/11 payment to RLI, none of the afore described additional work has been done. After repeatedattempts to to contact Jim Blair by phone without success, I finally reached him one time on his cell phone in late February when he told me he would be out the next week to schedule completion of the work. He didn't show up and I have not heard another word from him or anyone at RLI, despite repeated calls to both him and the RLI office. I have numerous left messages requesting a return call on Jim Blair's cell phone and have also left messages with his office asking that he contact me. As of this date (May 24,2012) I have not received the courtesy of one call from anyone, nor has anyone begun the additional work. This has to be the worst example of customer service that one can experience.

I think we the price we paid was in the neighborhood of $16,000, but we are not sure. We liked everything about them. We actually had two roofs put on by them and the first one was in March 2009. We got them off the list. We had several roofers come out and they were the ones we liked the best, so they were the ones that put the roof on for most of the house. We had some damage from a limb that came down on the house and we had to at least repair that part, but we decided to reroof the entire original roof at the time. We had a huge hailstorm last year and the whole roof had to be done again, 100% of it. The timing was not great, but everybody needed a roof then, so we totally understood why we had to wait as long as we did, but we wanted to work with them again because we knew that they would be around if there was a continuing issues.

I had received a couple of other estimates, but I used them because I found them on Angie's List. I got the work done before the storm. I was really pleased with them. Their price was in the ballpark. After the storm, they did not come out because they had some internal problems. I would not penalize them because they did do a nice job.

The roof overall seems good; the major problem was follow up for me and my daughter.
Response from Roofing by RLI
"The customer had several shrubs that were unfortunately damaged by our installation. We replaced all the shrubs he requested with shrubs he chose at the local nursery at no expense to him. We also compensated the customer for his inconvenience by installing new gutter guards on his entire house at no charge. He did have a leak at his roof that we responded to. We went to the customer's immediately and called the day we came out to inspect for his leak. The customer was not home at the time of the inspection. The leak was caused by split cedar siding where the garage roof meets the main house wall. We repaired the siding for him at no charge and have not heard from him since the occurrence. Unfortunately, the customer's daughter may have been missed in the estimate process due to the high call volume. We apologize for the inconvenience."
