I contacted Quality Refinishing about refinishing an antique jelly cupboard, he was to strip the inside and leave that bare wood, and then he was to faux woodgrain the outer case. He assured me that the graining would be no problem, that he had lots of experience and he promised that I'd love it. Throughout the process he kept me updated via text and I kept directing him to the pictures he had taken of another piece that I had which had the exact faux graining that I wanted to be replicated on the jelly cupboard. The piece looks NOTHING like what he had agreed to do, it now looks like some super glossy, cheap garbage IKEA cupboard. When he delivered it I told him that it was NOT satisfactory and I wanted all of the faux finish removed as per his satisfaction guarantee. His response was that he was too busy, his shop was full and I should just live with it for a month and see if I could learn to like it. He was paid in full, over $600. I have children with chemical sensitivities and asthma and the chemical reek coming from the cupboard is a health hazard, the lacquer was just slapped on and then he delivered it with no time for the fumes to even dissipate. We had to move it out onto the porch and begin removing the finish ourselves since it's a piece we use daily and we have no replacement for the next month. Upon beginning the stripping process we discovered that he didn't even strip the inside of the door, just "faux woodgrained" right over it. I told him all of this and he was unconcerned. He also wanted to charge me additional money to build a base for the cupboard that was already included in the price. We've gone from "I guarantee you'll love it" to "even though I am paid in full I'm too busy to fix my shoddy work so learn to live with it" in less than 2 weeks. Less than a month later he's using examples of the cupboard on Yahoo to promote his business and there's an open dispute with the BBB over this.
Response from Quality Refinishing
"I am replying to this complaint as respectfully as possible but I will be honest. We all know someone that wants something for nothing and unfortunately that it exactly what’s happening here. I have 15+ years of experience and recently opened my own business. You will see that this is my FIRST and ONLY negative review as this is the first customer I’ve had in 15 years that any issue could not simply be resolved. I strive to ensure my customers are happy! Mrs. [Member Name Removed] and I discussed estimate for stripping cabinet, painting, and glazing it. When she asked about the base I advised her that it would be additional due to me having to purchase the materials, and then build the base from scratch, and attach it. She said she understood that and confirmed that she definitely wanted [Member Information Removed] base. I didn’t write the base on the ticket which was my mistake and she took advantage of that. Very valuable lesson learned by me! I had to just lose the $300 charge for the base. When I delivered the finished cabinet her exact words were “this is too nice for my house”. She didn’t like the “faux graining” which is about the only true part of her review! I offered to strip it back off to correct the issue but that it would be 2 weeks. She agreed that she was happy with that idea and this would be no problem. I would never tell [Member Information Removed] customer to “just live with it” The next day however I get messages from her asking for [Member Information Removed] refund and pictures of damage that Mrs. [Member Name Removed] and her husband made by “rubbing really ho*** ** the finish”. I told her I was still willing to strip the finish back off and that I stand behind “normal wear and tear” but not deliberate damage. After I refused [Member Information Removed] refund she then brought up that her children have allergies and threatened me with legal action. That is when I realized that we could not come to [Member Information Removed] reasonable resolution. She contacted the bbb and is now leaving bad reviews on all of my social media platforms and trying to ruin my name and business!"

He completely restored the item. I love it. I can’t believe he was able to make it look like it had never been damaged. I will use them again.
