They are actually supposed to come on Wednesday for one of the six months cleaning inspections and replace the filter. My air conditioner went out this weekend so I called them this morning to ask if they want to do it then or send somebody separate today and they said that the person I requested will get here this afternoon sometime so they'll shuffle their schedule to see if they can help me out. So they are pretty good like that. They've been good over the years.

They ignored my complaints concerning motor noise- belt slipping, heat not getting up to 62, air handler extreme noise- even thought they said it was the type of ducts I had and changed a few of them out. They knocked a huge hole in the inside cement wall for a very small wire and left the mess; they also tore down and left a tremendous amount of insulation in the crawl space (still there becaue of the snakes)- this is probably where all the snakes are coming in. I sent them e-mails but they didn't respond past the first one on why they didn't install a filter unit gage (would just break and the thermostat took care of it) I felt the thermostat didn't work properly. I asked where all the measuring equipment was to check the freon, etc., but was told it wasn't needed as everything was factory set. They baically just took my money and blew me off. I haven't used the system since that first month of winter when it didn't work, they wouldn't/didn't come out to try to fix it. I was told I was just cold natured. Yes, my old bones need at least 72 degrees. After the first electric bill and being extremely cold, I bought six electric oil heaters to at least heat one area of the house. I was told I needed to expect the change in house temperatures since I was changing over from geo-thermal (no one could work on 35 year old system after husband died) so I decided to get a new system that could be worked on by HVAC techs. Ha-Ha. However, I think I have found an HVAC service tech who can figure out why this unit doen't work better, and this spring he is going to work on it. I asked for a Trane and was told American Standard was the same thing??

"[Member name removed] problems started when we found the unit was damaged from the factory! The service valve had been over torqued and couldn't be opened. We had the system installed before we found the problem! I wish we had replaced it with a new unit but there wasn't one available in town. We were able to start-up her system and get it running until we could get repair parts. We ordered the parts and the factory paid us to make repairs. This required removing all the refrigerant from the system, replacing the damaged parts, installing new filter driers and recharging the system. In December (unit was installed in August) [Member name removed] contacted us about a heating problem. We sent a technician to check the system but everything seemed to be working fine. We did not hear from her again and in February we called about doing her 6 month inspection and she informed us she did not want her unit checked. She did not give any explanation to our service dispatcher. To my knowledge we did not receive any emails or phone calls from [Member name removed] about any service problems. Much later, after she had given us a bad review, that we found out that she was continuing to have problems. We immediately gave her a call and offered to check her unit and make repairs if necessary. She has refused all attempts for us to help her. I would be glad to make any necessary repairs even today several years later."

During install, the owner came by and determined I needed a condensate pump - even though the existing gravity-fed system had nothing wrong with it. I caught the t-stat installer looking into my bedroom - hmmm? System turned on at 4 pm. At 8 pm, I called the salesman - his excuse was that the t-stat had to acclimate to my house & that it had been in a hot truck all day - lie. At 9:20 pm, I called the company because the unit had not shut off. Mark, a technician, told me to turn off the disconnect on the air handler (a/h). I also noticed there were 2 pigtail bundles of wires sticking out of the a/h.
(8/3/11) Mark came by the next morning; checked wires; found nothing wrong. He told me, because I had turned off the a/h (because he told me to), it had to reset itself back to new installation (lie!). I told Mark the condensate pump was leaking; he moved the pump off the floor (to reduce noise) and repaired leak.
This same day, late in the day, the service manager - J.R. - came by to check the a/h wiring. He found a wire had been installed wrong. He said the wiring was feeding back into the a/h, preventing it from shutting off. There was no repair order for me to sign, and I received nothing indicating there had been a service call. Either J.R. or Mark told me it was drawing only about 1 amp (I haven't found them to be paying my electric bills - of course they didn't think anything of it).
(8/4/11) The next day, the installers returned to do finish work; one of them admitted he was the one who did the wiring incorrectly.
Incorrect model numbers were provided to the manufacturer, so the SEER told me by the salesman was incorrect. The unit isn't as efficient as I was lead to believe.
I found out, belatedly, the company was to have pulled a city permit before starting the job. This is when they began to give me trouble. When the salesman came by (8/11/11), he took pictures of the pigtails, and where the truck had been parked that broke the cap off my driveway. Salesman said they could put a box around the pigtails (this would be a 1900 box), and he would sit down with the owner and talk about what needed to be done (admission that driveway & pigtails needed attention). When the salesman was leaving, he said he would have one of the installers come by to do the pigtail repair - this was his attempt to get around purchasing a permit. THEN, the installer called & wanted to come by & take care of the wires - another attempt at avoiding the permit.
8/12/11 permit issued; 8/16/11 notified by salesman that inspector was coming by that day - this is opposite of how the system is to be used.
(8/16/11) Prior to inspector's arrival, salesman installed a float switch (required by code) & left another pigtail. He knew this because inspector told him, so job would pass inspection. I doubt salesman had permit to do that job. And, aren't the installers supposed to know the electrical/mechanical/building codes???) I told salesman condensate pump had to go (50' of condensation would stay in that line over-winter & grow mold - not in my house). Of course, pigtails passed inspection - minimal compliance.
(8/18/11) Spoke w/salesman about things needing to be done. He said he'd talk to Pete the next day.
(8/29/11) No word from salesman or owner - interesting.
Got in touch w/professional hvac forum. Pigtail wiring needs to go in 1900 box. I found circuit breakers had been removed from breaker box & left blank. This is a safety violation of electrical code. Maintenance Technologies (MT) denies its installers were inside the breaker box. One of the installers had told me the new system would be at least 1/3 more efficient, as one of the circuit breakers was no longer needed.
I called city electrical inspector's office. An inspector came out & wrote up the company for leaving breaker openings blank. This really made MT mad!
(9/8/11) JR & assistant came by w/form w/all the SEER & EER info on it - which was wrong, so I questioned it. JR told the owner I was "angry", so I was written up w/BBB that way. The condensate pump & line were removed. He stuffed the wire pigtails inside the a/h - the t-stat wire is not rated to be enclosed w/high voltage wiring. They left the gravity-fed condensate line leaking
(9/15/11) JR & assistant returned & "repaired" condensate line leak. I found it to be leaking at yet another elbow, which I sealed myself.
Some time in October, I noticed a spot of mold growing on the paneling, inside the house, opposite to where the heat pump was installed. Since the condensate line ran across the dropped ceiling & exited the house at the heat pump, at the time the line was removed, condensate water was spilled inside the wall, causing mold to grow.
(1/19/12) As of this date, there is quite a bit of mold growing on the paneling inside the house.
Although a complaint was filed w/BBB, and MT has agreed to mediation w/BBB, the owner walked away from all these problems, using the excuse that "I feel we have bent over backwards to satisfy her..."
Run as far away from these crooks as you can. The money that I used for this system was all I had for retirement, and they were at least $1,000 more than other companies, which, for various important reasons, I did not hire.
Addendum to 01-19-12 report: The tape holding the insulation in place around the air handler has completely come loose. The insulation and tape are merely hanging over the edge of the top of the air handler. Unfortunately, the pictures were taken on 12/08/11, by a friend, who uses a digital camera. I never thought to have her put them in an email so that I could save them. I do, however, have hard copies of the four pictures she took.

They are absolutely wonderful. They installed our A/C unit and kept up on maintenance. They are very professional, reliable. The owner, Pete Mossman, even came out when we had water damage in our house and we were concerned it caused damage in our a/c unit. We highly recommend this company.

When my very old heat & air system failed, Maintenance Technologies was my FIRST choice since I had already established a happy, trusting relationship with them from back in the nineties when I bought another unit which is still running well. Their sales person, an older guy whose name I don't recall at the moment, came when he said he would and talked with me at length about the system that would be best for my home. He took lots of measurements, seemed knowledgeable and thorough and made a good impression. THEN he took more than a month to get back to me with his proposal and price and offered neither reason nor excuse for taking so long. By then I had already talked to others and decided to go with a competitor, Melton's. It has been more than a year now and I have been very happy with my decision to get a big TRANE with all the bells and whistles including wireless remote control, "Clean Effects" and dividing my large home into 4 separate heating & cooling zones for both comfort and economy.
Response from Maintenance Technologies Heating & Air
"I am Sorry [Member name removed] is unhappy! We try very hard to take care of all our customers, but occasionally a job gets set aside when we are very busy. I talked to the salesman involved and he admitted that he thought she wasn't in a hurry so he put off getting back with her. Again I am sorry she is unhappy and I sincerely apologize."

We ended up filling a maintenance contract with them. They never had to return or fix a problem or to check up. They come three times a year and we have been satisfied.

We were very unsatisfied with both the responsiveness as well as quality of work of this company. Originally we understood that when you pay fifteen thousand dollars to heat your home, that you re entire home will be heated properly. Unfortunately this wasn t the case here. Our bonus room wouldn t hold the temperature we knew it should, and no matter what they did to correct the issue, it still did not work properly. They installed a fan that kept me up at night and the heat was so dry my husband had to buy a dehumidifier in order to regulate the temperature correctly. One of the things that really bothered me most of all was the fact that they did not return my calls. It would have cost us another two thousand dollars to get things in order, but we felt it wasn t right and did not go forth with the changes.

"I WAS EXTREMELY SURPRISED BY THE EVALUATION OF OUR WORK. WE WERE UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT THE CUSTOMER WAS SATISFIED WITH THE RESOLUTION OF THE PROBLEMS & THERE IS SOME CONFUSION ABOUT THE JOB! WE INSTALLED 2 SYSTEMS IN THEIR HOME, A 2-1/2 TON GAS PACKAGE UNIT DOWNSTAIRS & A 3-TON AIR CONDITIONER & GAS FURNACE UPSTAIRS. WE ALSO REPLACED THE FIBERGLASS DUCT UPSTAIRS WITH SHEET METAL DUCT. EACH SYSTEM HAS A HIGH EFFICIENCY MEDIA AIR CLEANER BUT THEY OPTED NOT TO INSTALL HUMIDIFIERS! THE MEMBERS HAVE A 2-STORY HOME WITH OPEN STAIRWAYS IN THE FRONT & REAR OF THE HOUSE. THIS CAUSES THE HEAT TO RISE & THE UPSTAIRS FURNACE RARELY RUNS. THE BONUS ROOM IS CLOSED OFF FROM THE REST OF THE UPSTAIRS & GETS COLD. WE HAVE RETURNED SEVERAL TIMES AND MADE THE FOLLOWING CHANGES: MEASURE & BALANCE THE AIRFLOW TO THE UPSTAIRS ROOMS, MOVED THE BONUS ROOM RETURN TO FLOOR LEVEL, RESET THE FAN SPEED IN HEAT TO REDUCE NOISE AND SET THE UPSTAIRS FAN TO CIRCULATE THE AIR TO EVEN UP TEMPERATURES. DURING THIS PROCESS WE EXPLAINED THAT THE ONLY WAY TO COMPLETELY CONTROL THE BONUS ROOM WOULD BE TO ZONE THE UPSTAIRS SYSTEM. THEY OPTED NOT TO SPEND THE MONEY FOR THIS. ALL OF THE ADDITIONAL WORK WAS DONE AT NO EXPENSE TO THE CUSTOMER & WE WERE UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT THE CUSTOMER WAS SATISFIED WITH ALL WE HAD DONE. WE STAND BEHIND OUR JOBS AND WILL TAKE CARE OF ANY PROBLEMS IF THEY SO DESIRE."
