Salesperson who came around neighborhood (marked "no soliciting") came multiple times before I decided to have them do work. He stated he would be "project manager" and be onsite...though he had limited visibility on the actual install day. After removing old shingles, it was determined that I also had to replace the boards...substantially increasing the costs...and leaving me at substantial risk whether the insurance would cover it. Ultimately the insurance did agree to pay 100% for the cost of the boards...but there was a disagreement over how much the boards should cost, so I had to pay the difference (more than $1000). If they determined I needed the boards before taking off the shingles, we could have gotten pre-approval from the insurance, and resolved the discrepency before they started work. Their original estimate included a vague charge for the cost of boards if they should need to be replaced...and I negotiated that down ahead of time...though it wasn't nearly enough. They mentioned that they wouldn't know how many boards I needed until the roof was off...and said there seemed to be a couple soft spots, so there would probably be a few...there was no mention that it could be the WHOLE roof...or how many boards it would take to do the whole roof. It was very frustrating to have to come to this realization after my whole roof had been removed. I feel they PROBABLY had an idea after removing a smaller section...and could have done a temporary cover, and sought insurance approval etc. before tearing off the whole thing. I asked them to accept the price the insurance company said it should cost, they refused, and threatened to take legal action if they weren't paid in full. I felt that given the situation it would have been good for them to accept the rate offered by the insurance company. If the insurance company had said they were paying 85% and I would be responsible for 15%, my issue would be with the insurance company...but they said they would pay 100%...but Horvath was unwilling to do the work for what the insurance company said it should cost. If I knew that they overcharged so much ahead of time, I may have been able to find a company to do the work for what the insurance company said it should cost. There was also an issue with the boards. Although some boards were rotted, they contended that the reason I had to replace the whole roof was because the house was built with 3/8" plywood, and it had be 1/2"...but they proceeded to order and place 7/16"...when I questioned this, they insisted that 7/16' was the correct thickness...but then why did they tell me I needed 1/2"? I was first lead to believe the difference was overa critical 1/8" in thickness, but it was really only 1/16". Despite the trouble with getting the work done, the finished product DID look good (it's starting to look a little rough less than a year later...perhaps I should have let them come out to reinspect and possibly repair prior to submitting this)...they're supposed to honor the warranty for the first couple of years...hopefully I'll feel better about it as time goes by...but they left me feeling VERY frustrated, and they know it. I told them that if they didn't work with me on the price, I would do a BBB complaint, and they suggested I was trying to bribe them. I don't feel I was attempting to bribe them, I just felt I was asking them to do what was right.
