"Home Concepts enjoyed working with [Member Name Removed] but we were in a situation that would never have met her high expectations. All she kept saying is that she’s an engineer and she knows how these things are done. She requested that Home Concepts resurface her existing deck frame using deck brackets and bands, which was against our recommendation. We normally build decks utilizing lag bolts, heavy-duty deck screws and the utmost workmanship. Our challenge is that the existing deck framing system was not plum with the house, unlevel and the system that the customer wanted to use. Home Concepts strives to make the customer happy and we did everything we could in this situation. We mutually ended the job when the customer decided to finish the project herself."
When we originally discussed such details I asked what the door would be like and he said "just like my front door" which is solid wood. What he installed was a full glass door. When I objected he gave me a hard time and he said that what he had said was "like the existing door from the kitchen". This was not true and he gave me a lot of grief about it and then complained bitterly he would have to eat the cost for another door.
Later when it came to the finishing of the interior of the new room, I emphasized that I would not accept anything but a very good job on the taping and finishing of the drywall construction. I pointed out the work on the adjoining kitchen which was only done by the developer of the house eight years ago but was in fact done superbly as was the wood trim. He sarcastically replied that "maybe I should get them to finish the work instead".
Finally, there was some trim work undone on the outside of the new addition, When I questioned him on this, he said he thought that it looked better that way. When I pointed out that the rest of the house had such trim and it looked strange without it, again he gave me a hard time where I found myself yelling at him and then he said I didn't have to yell. The yelling was the only thing that stopped him having the point of view that he knew best and the customer was not always right.
Suffice it to say that his workers can do a decent job when given enough time and I liked them but he personally was characterized by rude remarks, sometimes on a personal level, and stubborn behavior.
"In response to the review by [Member Name Removed], there are a few items that are incorrect and some additional information that he failed to note. When [Member Name Removed] first contacted Home Concepts for a quote, he waited a year to do the work and asked that I do the work at the same price. I agreed to do the work for him without changing the quote (even though building supply prices had increased). He asked to see some of my recent work and I took him to a room addition that I had just finished (which was an $80,000 upgrade) just so he could see the quality of work that Home Concepts does (i.e., tongue & groove ceiling, tile, etc.). [Member Name Removed] did not want to spend a lot of money so he didn’t want many of the upgrades that were in the project I showed him. [Member Name Removed] received a much better product than he paid for. Below are my responses to his review: 1) Screen porch door - [Member Name Removed] started nit picking work before it was finished and when he didn’t hear what he wanted to hear would become angry and start raising his voice at me and my crew. When the work was finished the door was aligned properly. 2) The door that was on the quote was the door that the customer received (glass, full-view door), and I have the quote that was sent to him. Then the day after the door was installed, he immediately approached me first thing, irate saying this was not the door he wanted. I tried to explain and show him that was the door he agreed to on the quote and he said it wasn’t. He continued to yell at me and I finally told him to stop yelling at me. Realizing, there was no compromising with him, I replaced the door at my expense (even though [Member Name Removed] was wrong) in order to make the customer happy. 3) Drywall issue – I don’t know what his complaint is but the drywall work completed on his project was of excellent quality because that’s the kind of work that Home Concepts does. He constantly badgered me and my crew about our quality of work; might I add that I have been doing remodeling work in the West Knoxville/Farragut area for over 30 years. 4) [Member Name Removed] didn’t like the trim on the outside of the room, which I thought made the structure tie more into the house, I offered to redo the trim work as he wanted it and he said to leave it. 5) [Member Name Removed] was dealing with some personal issues at the time and I felt that he would take his frustrations out on me and my crew. I treated him with the utmost respect but there are boundaries that are acceptable in any situation. I never made rude remarks to [Member Name Removed] and RESENT his comments that I made derogatory comments personally about him. Furthermore, I have many, many clients that will tell you that I am friendly, trustworthy, respectful, and the most flexible company to work with. Home Concepts’ goal is to make the customer happy. 6) After reading [Member Name Removed]’s review I would like to add that Home Concepts did additional work for [Member Name Removed] to include many extras on the project at no extra charge, as well as repairing his kitchen cabinet that was about to fall off the wall, (that he said was “superbly” installed by the developer eight years ago). 7) At the end of the project, [Member Name Removed] even paid me a small bonus for the work. Home Concepts strives to make the customer happy and I don’t think [Member Name Removed] would have paid me any additional monies, above the original cost of the project, had he not been happy with our work."
"Home Concepts has never done any concrete work for this customer. We did however provide a quote for a porch. We will be glad to come out, assess the problem and provide a personalized, free quote."
