About a week after the installation a truck was backing into our driveway and "dug" a hole in the driveway because the asphalt was still soft. I called to have it fixed (which they did for no charge) but they never told me that trucks could not drive on the driveway for a few months, If I had known I could have avoided the whole situation. Now I have 3' x 4' patch in my new driveway.
About a week after the installation I noticed water in my garage that was coming from the rain. The asphalt was sloped to toward the the a house. I called them to come and readjust the slope in front of the garage. About 2 months later after repeated calls they came out and put in a 2 inch curb. This was a trip hazard. I called and complained again and again. Finally in October they level out the bump in front of the garage, not great but better. At that time they finally put the curb in place and also fixed "mushroom" that was formed by the tree roots.
This was a big job and I know that the everything cannot always be perfect. My biggest problem it was practically impossible to get them to come and fix their mistakes. And there fixes were not of the same quality as the work that was originally performed. I think 5 months (and dozens of phone calls) is a long time to wait to have a few minor problems fixed. I do appreciate the fact the fixed the damage from the truck at no charge.
Overall when it was put down, the driveway looked great. They sloped it properly to drain all rainwater away from the garage, and I was quite pleased with the new driveway, after years of saving up to replace our terrible old one.
However, within a few weeks, depressions started forming where I park my truck (F-150), and smaller ones under my wife's car (Camry). I called Joe, who said that was normal and driveways can sometimes settle a little, etc. He came out within a few days and took a look, then he scheduled the crew to come back and do an and quot;infraredand quot; repair. I found out later that term isn't quite appropriate, since they use propane fired equipment. I was told it would be seamless and would take care of the issue. The put down 9 patches, ranging in size from 1 ft diameter to about 3 fr diameter. They rolled everything down flat and, although it wasn't seamless and looked terrible, my new driveway was ok again.
That lasted for a few months until spring arrived. Throughout the spring and summer, the patched places sunk again, and this time I let them get worse and worse, hoping that a patch wouldn't fix and Fuller would have to replace it, and in the process fix the issue.
I called Mr. Robinette 3 or 4 times in the span of several months throughout the summer of 2013. Each time he apologized, said they could probably patch it again (eventually this will work, he would say) and promised he would get out by the and quot;end of the weekand quot;. A couple of times he was out of town. Today is Feb 24, 2014, and I've yet to see him. Actually, I did see him give a quote to my neighbor across the street, and then drive right past me while I mowed the grass, never offering a glance. I immediately took my neighbors on a quick tour of my Fuller Paving driveway, which convinced them not to entertain the quote they just received. I even had my attorney call Mr. Robinette, and he was given the explanation that it was a soil problem, and there was nothing they could do about it. There had been a driveway at my house since it was built in 1978, and it didn't sink. But, my attorney didn't think it was worth the fight, because proving negligence would be very difficult.
I agree, and maybe it wasn't Fuller Pavings fault. At least not directly. Maybe they misjudged the base stone needed. Maybe they should've put down a base asphalt laying, especially in the parking area. Maybe another patch, while ugly, would've worked. I'll never know, because Mr. Robinette has no intentions of coming to look.
What I do know, is that for another $1400, I could have had Bracken Paving do the job, and they quoted a base asphalt layer that would have been a little stronger. Or, if something did go wrong, I think they would have worked with me to fix the problem. If it truly was a soil or other issue beyond their control, I would've gladly negotiated something with them to try and fix it. But they weren't going to take a loss after trying to patch it once, regardless of the issue. After the 1 year and quot;warrantyand quot; ran out, they have no obligation to do anything I guess.
So I'm now looking at a $4000 repave of the parking area on a $6500 new driveway, that my 4 year old son never got a chance to ride a bike on, and that has tripped more than one person because there's a 6 inch depression the size of a person in the middle of. The water no longer really drains away from the garage because it ponds in the holes.
And Fuller Paving doesn't care at all. That's the part that bothers me so much. Everyone makes mistakes. And I can't even prove its their fault. But they promise and promise and never deliver, without the courtesy to even come look.
I'd be happy to give anyone looking to hire Fuller Paving a tour of my driveway. Until I can save up enough money to have it fixed, Fuller Paving's work (or at least customer service) is on full display at my house.
