If you have a big dog with anxiety issues going to the vet's office, DO NOT take them to this office. I made the appointment to get our big dog's nails clipped and sedation was our only option for him due to trauma in his past. They started by giving him meds to take before the appointment, which I think, after seeing the results, was a near overdose because of how he acted the entire day. We worried all day about his paused breathing and lethargy. After arriving, because he wouldn't accept a muzzle, they put a choke collar on him, ran the leash through the door, pulled tight, and PINNED him behind the door to give him the sedation shot. Traumatized is an understatement. It literally would have taken a snack and distraction to give him this shot, but instead, because they were scared of a dog that HADN'T EVEN REACTED WITH THEM, they chose the rough option that only increased overall anxiety in the dog. It's unprofessional and they proved to be very uneducated on how to handle dogs of this size and it is very disappointing. To top it all off, they did a horrible job at actual cutting his nails! The nurse came in and spent less than two minutes halfway cutting his nails while acting like he was going to wake up and eat her. SHE EVEN MISSED 2 WHOLE NAILS! I came to this office for assistance in calming our dog enough to trim his nails, and they couldn't even do what I asked for, plus added to his vet anxiety, and left us with a ridiculous bill to pay for. I am never going to be able to get him into a vet's office again, even for shots after this experience. So DO NOT bring your anxious dog to this office, it will only make things worse with a big price tag, and trauma for everyone involved.

Everything went well at this visit with Dr. Hyatt. I have been using Colonial Heights Animal Hospital for the past two years. They treated my senior toy poodle Penny for kidney disease, pancreatitis, blindness, and routine wellness after I moved to Kingsport. Penny required a lot of care and I have interacted with all of the staff at one time or another including both Dr. Hyatt and Dr. Gray who are both excellent veterinarians. They are knowledgeable and caring and make every effort to help their patients. They always took their time with Penny and answered all of my questions. All of the staff at Colonial Heights Animal Hospital obviously love animals and treat them with kindness and in a professional manner. They were also very considerate and sensitive when Penny's care came to an end. They helped me take care of her final arrangements and I now have her ashes to keep forever. I did not hesitate to bring my new family member to them when I adopted another toy poodle, Mitzi. I am sure Mitzi will receive the very best care at Colonial Heights Animal Hospital.

We recently moved to the area from out of state and needed to get established with a vet as we have 2 dogs and 1 cat. We used Colonial Heights Vet as we live very close and they had an A rating on Angie's list. We took our labradoodle first as we thought she might be coming down with a UTI. She was treated by Dr Gray and he was very sweet with her and very good at explaining to me exactly what he felt needed to be done to check for the UTI. The staff was extremely friendly and pleasant and professional so two days later I took our German Shepherd in (who has severe allergies and was treated by a vet dermatologist in Tucson) to meet Dr Gray and they got along well. I had all their records faxed to Dr Gray and he gave me a lot of his time to discuss my German Shepherd's allergy problems. I needed a drug prescribed for him that we were running out of and he was nice enough to call it into Walgreens for us. Overall, we are very impressed with Dr Gray and the entire staff that we have met so far. They certainly have treated our dogs well. They might be a little pricey for this area but not in comparison to what we paid in Tucson so that is hard for us to gauge.

Years ago I worked as a vet tech and then a coordinator for a vet tech program where I placed students with local vets and monitored their on the the job training so I think I have a good 'feel' for quality vets and I felt Dr Gray is one. I had no contact with the older vet who started the clinic in 1972 but I hear he's great too.

Dr. Hyatt is very good with the animals. In fact if your pet needs surgery he's the best to go see. What I don't care for is how much they overcharge for the services at the office. Follow up needs to be improved upon also.

We have used this vet for over ten years. We have dealt mostly with Dr. Carr Hyatt, but the other vets we have seen have been excellent as well. The staff is always helpful and friendly, and it is very obvious that they love animals. Dr. Hyatt is a very compassionate person and a wonderful vet. This cat was sick earlier in the year, and I was so impressed with the way Dr. Hyatt followed up. He called us every day to see how our cat was doing and called until she was well. They are usually able to get you an appointment quickly (within a week) for routine visits. They will work you in for emergencies. They also spayed both our cats with no problems. I would highly recommend this vet for any of your pets.
