On 3/17/14, Advanced Heat Pump Systems, Inc. was contacted to inspect the HVAC unit in my elderly parents’ home (located very near their office). The unit had stopped working 2 days before. When the repairman arrived, he briefly looked at the unit and then abruptly yanked a wire out of the compressor, stating that both the wire and the compressor it served were burned. He said the compressor needed to be repaired or replaced. The man said he would have the office mail out price quotes for those repairs/new equipment. My father told him we needed to get quotes elsewhere to compare prices. He paid $60 for the service call and the man left. A few days later, my parents received a quote in the mail. Advanced Heat wanted $2,314.00 to repair the existing unit. The company also supplied a huge quote to replace the entire system, including the ductwork, which was in fine shape.
On 3/22/14, my parents had their HVAC unit inspected by another local heating/cooling company. My father explained to that repairman that the wire to the compressor was burned. However, the man looked at it closely and said it was NOT burned but merely corroded. He went out to his truck, quickly attached a new end to the wire, and connected it to the compressor. The unit has run perfectly ever since. Moreover, the service call and the repair together cost only $45.00. Obviously, either the Advanced Heat representative lacked the skills to accurately diagnose HVAC units or he intentionally lied to my parents. In either case, that $60.00 NON-service call was a frustrating waste of time and money.
On 5/27/14, my mother wrote a letter to the owner of Advanced Heat, Larry Vance, voicing her dissatisfaction with the service call and requesting the return of their $60.00.
On 6/22/14, no refund had arrived, so I filed a detailed complaint with the Better Business Bureau against Advanced Heat.
On 7/7/14, Larry Vance responded to the BBB, acknowledging that his repairman had apparently given an incorrect diagnosis. Mr. Vance stated that he would gladly reimburse my parents the charges.
On 8/4/14, I followed up with the BBB to confirm that my parents were still waiting for their refund from Advanced Heat.
Another week passed and no check arrived, so I phoned Mr. Vance myself. I made that call from the law office where I was employed, the business name of which I’m sure displayed on Mr. Vance’s phone when he answered it. I told him that I expected an immediate refund of the $60.00. I suspect it was fear that he might become the subject of legal action that prompted Mr. Vance to finally return the money to my parents 3 days later.
In summary, the empty excuses to the BBB followed by failure to follow through on the refund in a timely manner looks to me like intent to defraud a protected population - senior citizens who appeared trusting and able to financially afford unnecessary work. I would warn potential customers against contacting this company. No one wants to be taken advantage of by shady business practices.
They have a great response time in emergency and do really good work.
Where we live is so far out in the Boonies it's difficult to get anyone out here. But these guys will come and do a great job for a fair price.
