Chuck Hooper - Tile contractor - Job: Shower/Bathroom floor-Sept. 2016 I found Chuck Hooper when looking for a tiling contractor who knew the Wedi Shower system and had installed it several times and would allow my husband and I to learn, as we wanted to install it in another bathroom. I found Chuck thru his brother who had a flooring company that carried the Wedi components. We talked for an hour about the Wedi system and he recommended his brother Chuck to do the tiling and confirmed that he had installed Wedi several times and would be more than happy to teach us. I also talked to a few of my respected friends who had used him, but so wish I had asked more questions about their WHOLE experience! So we contacted Chuck Hooper, he came and looked at our bathroom. First thing he asked me, was if I had heard of a protein powder MLM drink that he was selling and tried to tell me about it, weird. I wasn't interested. He seemed nice and said he would totally let us watch over his shoulder while HE installed our Wedi shower system. He showed us pictures of his work, even a few jobs of our friends bathrooms that he had done. So we felt comfortable to move on with him. So we picked out our tile, grout etc.. First red flag was that Chuck came over to discuss tile and our job, and then asked for a check, which we were not prepared to write yet.. If he had explained this on the phone, we would've been more prepared. And then without thinking about it.. he asked for a check for 75% of the job before he had even started, because he said he had to buy the tile, grout etc.. ahead of time, which is understandable, but not 75% up front!! When Chuck arrived, he showed up with 2 guys from Guatemala who did all the work. He dropped the supplies off and left! It was raining and I guess Chuck expected them to work in the rain, so my husband had a large display tent and set that up for them so they wouldn't be tracking in mud back and forth from cutting tile. They were incredibly nice, but only one spoke English. THEY did a good job, but cut a few corners, laid a few chipped tiles that had to be replaced, and several places had to be re-grouted because they wiped out too much grout when wiping down. I learned that Chuck doesn't do any of the tile work at all, like he gave us the impression he did, nor does he put in the Wedi system, the guys do it. After we paid Chuck, that's when he changed from Dr. Jekyll to Mr Hyde... his attitude soured, horrible manners to my husband and I and became verbally demeaning to us when asking the simplest questions about our job. While the Wedi system was being put in, we were taking pictures, making notes, because this was a system we ourselves had taken classes on, got certified to do.. and would send a few pictures to Chuck and ask a few questions since he wasn't there installing like he said he would. And remember he said that we could literally watch over his shoulders while he did it?! I had a question about how does the Wedi product transition between it and the drywall, and do you use mesh tape? These are his words verbatim, yes, I saved ALL the emails. “Lisa I'm gonna say this the best I can without being rude. Please stop sending me this stuff. I know what the **** im doing. If you continue on with this I'm gonna pull my guys off your job. No more. I don't need you micro managing me or Ramon. I'm serious I don't need this. I promise you I have plenty of jobs where customers trust me and hire me because. I KNOW WHAT IM DOING.” After getting that response, I thought does he not remember even talking to us about this? And when did I say I didn't trust what he was doing? He said he's teach us?! So I sent him an email reminding him about my long conversation with his brother and wondered about his memory? His behavior and attitude became unpredictable and his responses to our concerns and questions were completely off subject and bizarre. After the guys started the shower wall, the shower floor tile was delayed another day and then realized it wasn't coming in at all, so Chuck said, you better go get another tile to replace it, the guys were already working in my home. Was this not HIS job to make sure all the tile was in before starting the job, he ordered it based on what was needed, right? My husband closed his business and ran across town to find another tile company that had the tile in stock. The clerks at the tile company asked who our tiler was, my husband mentioned Chuck's name with a voice that showed he wasn't happy, and several men in the shop responded to hearing it was Chuck Hooper, they didn't have good things to say and said he was a “hot head”. Then a few days later when putting in the shampoo niche into the wall, Chuck realized he hadn't accounted for that and told ME to go get 2 or 3 pieces of marble and started measuring and calculating how much he needed right there. Why had he not calculated all of and brought the marble himself with all the other tiles?? Again he came unprepared! The guys were in my house so I couldn't leave, so I said I'll go get it after they leave. Later, one of the tile guys asked me about “how are we turning the corner on the shower wall that went out onto the outside wall. And I said, “you're asking me”, so I called Chuck and asked, assuming that was the right thing to do, Chuck was furious to get a question like that from me and the tile guy hung his head as if, now he's gonna get raked across the coals for asking a question. And by the way, this was a question that I had asked when he first came to our job, and he said..”just trust me it will be great”.. well, it's not that I don't trust you, but I want to know what you will do to see if I even like it. By the time Chuck came to see what tile guy was referring to, my husband had come home and we looked at the area and were thinking about our options. Upon Chuck seeing the wall in question, he looked at my husband and I and said verbatim..”Have you guys ever built a house?,.. cause if you ever built a house together, I don't think your marriage would survive it”.. We looked at each other in shock as to his answer about the wall and asked him what did they have to do with anything? At that point his answers to things became alarming and it made me wonder if this guy is an idiot and trying to deflect, or has he had a stroke or something?! My husband was livid and wanted to fire him that day but the job was coming to an end. After the guys left, we happened to have a friend in the commercial tile business come over as we had asked him about how do we put the apron back onto our curved tub that had to be cut off to do tile work under neath it. At this point we just wanted Chuck out of our lives, but they should've known how to do it, but didn't have any equipment with them to do it. Our friend instantly noticed 3 floor tiles with chips in them and said those need to be replaced as they will only get worse. Then he noticed the grout was too thin in places and needed to be re-grouted and he noticed that our 12 x 24 tile was bowed and shouldn't have been laid. Then he asked who did your tile work and we told him Chuck's name and he instantly knew his name and mentioned, he had a reputation for being a “hot head”, then proceeded to tell us a story about him and other tilers waiting to get their tile out of a warehouse and what had occurred. Chuck's guys did have to come back and take out 3-4 pieces of 12 x 24 tile that was chipped and had to re-grout several places on the shower walls. The guys told us that this was coming out of their pocket as if I was supposed to pay them something additional?! I SO wish I had known this before hand. I realized after this job was done, there was nothing on the internet about Chuck, no reviews and for a while I just wanted to forget about him, but I waited 2 years to post anything, because I wanted the emotion to be gone, but the facts to remain, so in case anyone else looked for him, they would know about his behavior. Ask around about his attitude and behavior. One reason we also felt secure about him was the fact he was a Christian man, as we are as well, bu
