I have a 2000 GMC Truck and the check engine light was staying on. I took the truck to autozone and ask if they could read the codes on the engine. The parts man was friendly and helpful. The told me he could read the codes with a instrument Autozone has.
We went to the truck and he attached to code reader to the vehicle. The code can up in seconds as to the problem. It was the upstream O2 sensor on drivers side. There was no charge for the code reader and he didn't try to sell me any parts.
I went home and clean the thread of the O2 sensor,( that made a better ground) and the check engine light went off
