Child Care - Center
My toddler son attends Kid Tech II in Collierville. Overall, my wife and I are pleased with the service they provide.
What we like:
** Price seems fair at $185/week + they offer 2 weeks per year at 1/2 off if your child will be absent (vacation, holidays, etc.) They do require 2 week written notice for those absences and to withdraw your child permanently. Payments can be made at the school or online via Paypal and are due by noon on Tuesday.
** Full service breakfast, lunch and snacks. They offer a good variety of food with several vegetables and/or fruit options at every meal. There is no extra charge for food, but you do have to be there prior to 7:30 am to get breakfast and they are strict about that. Free coffee for parents.
** Facilities are modern and clean. Security system is via badge check-in. Each classroom has its own restroom. Separate playground for big and small kids. There is also a lot of natural environment around the Collierville facility and they take the kids out there to play/explore from time-to-time.
** Friendliness of staff. The staff is very engaging and make time to talk with the parents. You get daily reports on what your child did and any issues they had. And you can tell, they really do love the kids.
** After school program. In addition to daycare, they offer several optional programs like Spanish, Computer, Soccer, Swimming, etc. These do cost extra (usually less than $100 for 6 - 8 weeks).
** Structure of day. The kids in the toddler program follow a regular program every day mixed with indoor and outdoor learning/creativity activities. Although they do publish their curriculum, we have found it hit-or-miss depending on the teacher as to how closely they follow it (see below).
** Class size / Diversity of students. The toddler classes have 10 - 14 kids with two teachers per room and due to its proximity to FedEx, there is a great deal of cultural diversity among the students.
What we don't like:
** Turnover in staff. Especially recently, there appears to be a large turnover in staff. A couple of really good teachers have moved on and the summer months seems to bring in younger girls to work in the classrooms. The classroom environment can get a bit chaotic during those times. They are still very friendly, but don't have the experience that a lot of the older, full-time teachers have. A lot of afternoons, it seems as if the kids are kind of having their way with them.
** More advanced curriculum. May go back to turnover, but if you get an inexperienced teacher, expect a similar type of daily curriculum for your child. At this age, they seem to stress creativity over learning. Lots of drawing, painting, singing, story time, etc.
I think they'd do a better job pairing a new teacher with one who has been there a while than putting two new teachers in the same room, which is what happens sometimes.
** No webcams. Feel safe with the security in place, but would be great to be able to check-in via web from time-to-time.
Overall, it's been a good experience for our son. We do wonder if he'd get a more rigorous learning environment somewhere else, but at this age, we are pleased with the experience Kid Tech II has provided our son.
