The Vet was very professional but did what all of them seem to do today. Gave my dog the least effective med. 1st so we'd keep coming back to spend more money there. I've had dogs all my life and have dealt with just about all things that can happen to them. So, when I told the Vet I'd rather have the steroid injection, she seemed to be offended which made my son settle for the pills. Definitely more interested in her income than the welfare of my dog. However this seems to be the trend with the Vets of today.

My kitty was bloated with gas and burping or coughing every 20 seconds or so. This had been going on for 24 hours. It started on Sunday. She had stopped eating and drinking and all bowel and kidney function and had withdrawn and was silent. She's usually very vocal.I took her to R.I.V.E.R. It was Memorial day morning and they were understaffed. Only one vet on duty. I needed to know, first, if this was an emergency, or could the cat endure until tomorrow and see her regular vet. After a short wait a technician came out to see me to try to determine. She had not seen this set of symptoms (and said so when I asked) and was unqualified to advise. She tried taking a guess but that was no help. I determined it best I wait to see the veterinarian.
After an hour and forty minutes a second veterinarian, Dr. Droucet, a very nice young woman, entered the clinic to help with the overload. She came to the exam room and met me and my cat, Char, and determined she'd need to take an X-ray. I went to lunch and returned an hour later. She had taken an x-ray and sent it offsite for evaluation by a radiologist. The radiologist determined my cat had lung disease. Dr. Droucet showed me the x-ray and pointed out all the gas in the cat's system. She determined the cat's oxygen level was low and that the cat was also dehydrated. She had the cat given fluids and kept her overnight in an oxygen chamber. I returned the following morning to pick up the cat, along with the x-ray and diagnosis, and took her to her regular vet.
Her regular vet, Dr. Ford at Signal Mtn Veterinary Clinic, determined after two days of further observation he could find no problem with Char's lungs. I asked him what about the x-ray and diagnosis from R.I.V.E.R. and he said only he couldn't account for how they think down there. He did prescribe Prednisone and I took Char home. There was more to it but no more regarding R.I.V.E.R. As an end result I went to CVS and got some infant Gas-x and gave it to Char. That seemed to cure her. She was back to herself after two treatments. I am terribly disappointed in R.I.V.E.R. The vet gave, or obtained for me, a wrong diagnosis, the technician was clueless and even the receptionist had an attitude. But, if it's an emergency you have no choice. I am sure they all mean well and work hard and try to do their best.Perhaps the Prednisone Dr. Ford prescribed helped. I can't be sure it didn't. This is a review of R.I.V.E.R. so I won't review Dr. Ford. But it seemed the Gas-x is what worked. It seems I spent an entire week (and a total of 941.00) worrying about my cat, watching her suffer, and finally began giving her water and broth through a syringe. I would press her bloated stomach and could hear the gas escaping out her mouth. I determined myself this gas had to be dealt with. Dr. Droucet saw it firsthand on an X-ray and did not move to treat it. Dr. Ford suspected a blockage and, when asked about the gas dismissed it and said it would come out one way or the other. Dr. David, me, saw it was making the cat feel awful and determined it had to go. I got rid of it with Gas-x. My cat is fine. Thanks for nothing R.I.V.E.R. You should refund my money.

"On behalf of the RIVER staff, I would like to apologize for the negative experience that you recently had with us. We sincerely regret having disappointed you, and hope that you will not hesitate to call on us in the future should your pets require emergency or specialty services. Please understand as you read this response that, in order to respect your privacy, we will not disclose any details about Char's condition or treatment that you haven't already mentioned. With that being said, we appreciate the opportunity respond to your concerns. Regarding our understaffed condition, while we go through great lengths to prepare for holidays due to the fact that we are typically one of the only veterinary facilities open in the region, we have no way of knowing how many emergencies will come in, or what level of care they might require. It is for that reason that we often have additional staff and doctors on call. However, the lengthy wait that you describe is something that we do our very best to avoid, and we do not consider such a wait acceptable. Regarding Char's radiographic findings, and the gas distention in her stomach, both Dr. Drouet and the board certified veterinary radiologist that evaluated Char's radiographs noted the gas, but these findings are not unusual in a cat experiencing respiratory distress, as they will often swallow air. As you mentioned, Char was experiencing an intermittent cough, and Dr. Drouet determined that her Oxygen saturation levels were low, meaning that she was not properly ventilating (exchanging gases in her lungs). While gas distention of her stomach may have caused some discomfort, the clinical signs she was exhibiting were consistent with a primary lung problem, and the radiologist concurred with that suspicion. Concerning the incorrect diagnosis that you were provided, our records indicate that we recommended further diagnostics to determine the underlying cause of the lung disease and that you elected to pursue these diagnostics with your regular veterinarian. Unfortunately, using only the radiographs, we were unable to provide a diagnosis. While we truly regret your disappointment in our services, we are very happy to see that you report Char's conditions has improved, and we wholeheartedly thank you for your review. Not only do reviews such as yours allow us to clear up any misconceptions or miscommunications that we may have had while caring for Char, but they also point out areas where we can improve our services in the future. Please don't hesitate to contact us directly at 423-698-4612 if you would like to discuss Char's case further. Sincerely, - The RIVER Staff"

was treated like an idiot-which i am when it comes to medicine-led me along with hope when any decent honest vet would have laid it out like it really was-made money a top priority- these people are making money hand over fist if they charge everyone else like they did me

"On behalf of the entire RIVER staff, please allow me to express our sincere condolences for the loss of your pet. Please know that we would have responded to your concerns much sooner had we been aware of them, but it wasn't until today that we became aware of your review on Angie's List. We certainly understand your frustration with the fact your pet did not respond to aggressive treatment, both because of the tragic loss of a loved one, and due to the financial implications of such therapy. Please understand that we are not disclosing his name or condition to respect your privacy, but our records indicate at least 3 different conversations during which we discussed his very guarded prognosis for survival due to the severity of his injuries, including one before you elected to proceed with surgical treatment. Please know that he was under the care of not only our emergency doctors, but also our surgeon, our internal medicine specialist, and our entire critical care staff. All of us did everything we could to give him the best chance for survival. If you feel for any reason that we did not provide compassionate care for your pet, we would sincerely appreciate an opportunity to clear up any misunderstandings or misconceptions. Please don't hesitate to contact Donna Oster, our hospital manager, or Dr. Sallye Gregg, our hospital director by calling our clinic at 423-698-4612. Again, our sincere condolences, - The RIVER Staff"

I just moved to Chattanooga when one of my cats developed a problem. I took him to a local vet who did x-rays. The local vet thought the problem was with my cat's stomach, while I thought the problem was with my cat's colon. The local vet agreed to send my cat to the internal medicine vet at RIVER. The internal medicine vet knew exactly what was wrong with my cat..the cat had a blockage in his colon. The doctor and staff kept me informed during the entire 24 hr period my cat was there. They graciously accepted each and every one of my calls, answered all questions, and took superb care of my cat. The bill was reasonable for the amount of x-rays taken ( x-rays every 15 minutes for 3 hrs, then every 30 minutes for a couple of hours, and then once an hour, etc) plus an ultrasound, and bloodwork was done. I would highly recommend this facility to all pet owners.

My cat became ill all of a sudden and they did a great job keeping me informed about what was going on. When I took my cat in they were no nonsense and they took her straight back. They let me stay back in the ICU with her. They gave me constant updates and realistic diagnosis. They were kind and they called her by name. They seemed to be very compassionate and thorough. If I called down there to ask something the doctors would come to the phone. I can't even explain that kind of service, I was comforted that my animal was being taken care of.

They did a great job on our cat, and our cat was able to come home that next day after the surgery. I felt very comfortable with the doctors there, and their prices were fair for the amount of surgery that was done.
