"First off, all I can say is "WOW!" When member first called me, I told her that I was extremely busy and didn't think I had time, but I would try to come by and at least look at what she needed. She was very upset and kept on with the same "I paid him and he left...I couldn't get him to answer my calls..." I felt for her and put other work aside to complete her railings (which I found out later that she was the one that supposedly installed the poles, so I am not even sure if the "other guy" existed). She attempted to pay me up front for the railings and I told her that I would rather wait until they were completed to be paid. Upon completion of the railings, she paid me the agreed upon price plus what she called a “tip” and asked me to come back to complete the gates. Although I told her that I had other jobs to complete before I could make it back to her, she gave me a small installment to cover the material for the gate work. At this time she told me that she was extremely satisfied with my work and that she had taken really great photos that she would promptly put on Angie’s list, which was over 3 weeks ago. She also stated that the gates were “no rush” and that I could do them in my spare time. I would like to address her comment regarding “rough and splintered wood” on the railings. The material used was pressure treated, not oak. The member called me only once between the time that I completed the railings and returned to complete the gates. I was not difficult to get a hold of, nor was I unresponsive to her. First off, regarding her comment about gate posts being crooked, I installed only one post that was not crooked when I left. If it is crooked, it is due to someone else moving it before the concrete had a chance to dry. Regarding concrete not drying correctly, I am not sure how that could happen. As far as compensation, I spent at least $75.00 out of my own pocket for additional materials (for which I have not been reimbursed). Upon completion of the gates, I made sure that she was happy and content with my work and asked her if there were any issues to tell me then and that I would be happy to correct them. She stated that she was totally pleased and asked me if I was mad at her, because she had been quite rude. I am trying to take the high road here. Looking back at the situation, I can see why the other guy (if there was one) left. As we all know, in all professions, there are people that are difficult to work for. It just never ceases to amaze me that you try to help someone in need and this is the way you are treated in return. I find it interesting that her report indicates that she was unsatisfied with the work, but indicated the price was acceptable. The member’s report is totally unmerited; she actually got a great job at a discount price. Thank you member for renewing my faith in human nature."
