They took my bike in and agreed to see if it would be possible to upgrade my current shifting system from bar-ends to STI shifters. I ride a recumbent bike and have wanted an STI shifting system. I explained to them there was no rush, so to take their time and see what they could work out for me. Over the span of a couple of weeks, they ordered various components and began retro-fitting STI shifters onto my bike. This was not a simple, nor easy task and took a fair amount of trial and error to determine what could work.
In brief, my current gearing system (i.e. 3x9) turned out to be too old to successfully modify to work with currently available/new STI shifters.(i.e. 3x9 STI shifting cables exit at 90 degrees from the hoods, which would cause interference with my legs as I pedaled) My only upgrade path would have been to change to a newer 2x10 -or- 3x10 gearing system, since ten speed STI shifters have all cables exiting at the rear of the handlebars when mounted.
So I opted instead to have them revert my shifters back to the bar-end types and to replace my old front derailleur with the correct one for a three chain-ring setup.(i.e. my existing front derailleur was only meant for a two chain-ring setup and they informed me of this problem when servicing my bike)
The Outdoor Store went to exceeding lengths in order to fulfill my request, and I was well pleased with all their efforts to satisfy me. They kept in good contact, letting me know about each hurtle involved and my various options at each stage of the process. In the end, it was 'I' who chose to forgo my original request and revert back to my older shifting system, which they have made work better than ever now!
