The first photo displays shimmering beautiful floor.
Remember the saying? Don't judge a book by its cover. Same here, read on and
you'll do well to avoid the McClurg's Decorating Center.
I contacted McClurg's by telephone and spoke with Mrs.
(Marsheine) McClurg and we discussed the Balterio brand laminate. Mrs. McClurg
was very informative and in addition, explained the procedure of how Mr. (Sam)
McClurg would come to our home and provide a free in-home estimate should we
chose. Mrs. McClurg left the impression of a long standing mom and pop
owner-operated business who took pride in their work. We would soon learn that
both she and Mr. McClurg were well polished salespeople but not much for
installation and follow through.
After Mr. McClurg had visited our home, Mrs. McClurg
contacted me the next day Thursday, January 15th and verbally gave
me the breakdown of the cost estimate with the Great Room total being $3414.93
and the Guest Bedroom came in at $1234.05. I told Mrs. McClurg I would update
my wife on the cost and would get back with them thereafter. I called McClurg's
Decorating Center back the following day, Friday,
January 16th. Mr. McClurg answered the phone, and I reminded him
that I was not as convinced as my wife of replacing our carpet with laminate. I
made a commitment to her that if McClurg's Decorating Center
would install only the Guest Bedroom and, we would give it a month and if all
worked out well, I would go along with completing
the Great Room too. Mr. McClurg agreed
to install the Guest Bedroom only and then the Great Room at a later date if
all went well. Mr. McClurg stated he would need a deposit down and I authorized
$600 to a credit card for the deposit. Mr. McClurg assured me he would mail me
a copy of the proposal and deposit in writing. Mr. McClurg never did mail the
proposal with deposit receipt, but rather, sent it with his installation crew.
The workers arrived at 11am and left the premises at 1:15pm,
a total of two hours and 15-minutes to unpack, install the padding, laminate,
molding and pack-up. When we looked into the room we were horrified at what we
saw. Nothing looked professional, the planks were not symmetrically laid with
several joints being within an inch of the baseboard (see photos #2 & #3);
the shoe molding had been cut off square with no effort to install along the
vertical trim (see photo #4); there was no transition piece from the laminate
to the carpet at the closet door (see photo #5); the T-Molding of the entrance
door had not been fitted correctly and there were gaps at both door jams (see
photo #6); and lastly, there was a joint in the middle of the door of the first
plank when entering the room; this is a definite no, no per the Balterio
manufacturers installation guide. Incidentally, it was very cold outside on
installation day with very gusty winds and I offered Matt a stall of our garage
to set up his saw for cutting. I knew there would be sawdust on the floor but
what I did not know is laminate does not leave sawdust as if cutting a piece of
wood, but rather, a fine dust which floats through the air like pollen, you
can't even imagine the mess throughout everything stored on the shelves of our
garage. Yes, I offered but I fault Matt for taking up the offer being fully
aware of what his laminate dust was like. This was an awful mess to try and
clean up! The effort is ongoing.
On Thursday, February 5th, 3-days after
installation my wife and I visited McClurg's Decorating Center and I carried
into scheduled meeting one of three planks that had been ruined by Trey so that
the McClurg's could personally see. Both Sam and Marsheine McClurg were
present. We not only stated how "schlock" the installation visually
looked, I then outlined the concerns I had for warranty per the Balterio
manufacturers installation guidelines (see photo #7). At one time when my wife
was discussing her displeasure of seeing a joint just ¾ inches from the
baseboard Mr. McClurg flippantly replied, we sell rugs too. In the end, all the
McClurg's were willing to do is return to make an attempt to adjust the square
end of the shoe molding, replace the T-Molding and write us up a personal
warranty. He flatly refused to take up and correctly lay the planks that looked
cobbled up where they met the walls. Yes, our blood pressure went up. We agreed
to Tuesday, February 17th as the day to retro fit the T-Molding and
shoe molding. It was that or nothing at all.
The crew was a no-show on February 17th with no
phone call and could not be reached. On Friday, February 20th Sam
McClurg arrived at the appointed time with Trey (the installer) and the helper
he had at the time of initial estimate in tow. The retro fit of the shoe
molding was completed and the T-Molding replaced. Mr. McClurg did hand me a
personally written full installation warranty by McClurg's Decorating Center
signed by him which both I and my wife feel is worthless. In conclusion, be
sure to look at the last two photo which is how the installer left the
T-Molding (glue has oozed out the entire length of the T-Molding).

Response from McClurg's Decorating Center
"We have returned to the home of ( members name removed)and we have addressed their concerns. We re-installed and corrected the items that caused them concern. We were happy that both of the Cobes were satisfied as we left their home. We take pride in our knowledge of our products, the support we receive from the wholesalers and manufacturers that we deal with, and the installers we hire. We regret that the Cobes were unhappy, and trust that they are now satisfied with their new flooring. We wish them well as they enjoy their home in East Tennessee. McClurg’s has been in business for almost 42 years and has enjoyed great success in working with and pleasing our customers. We are thankful to count these members among them also. Sam and Marsheine McClurg"

It all went very smoothly. A couple of days to remove all of the old flooring and several days to install the new floors. It took about 6 or 7 days for the complete job.

The floor looks beautiful! The plumber finished removing the toilet and sink vanity early, so I called McClurg's and the workman came over within the hour and had the job completed in about 2 hours. Everything looks great. This is the second time I have used McClurg's and both times I have been very satisfied . Everyone is pleasant and helpful.

Mcclurgs did excellent work on the floor. I am completely satisfied and I have no complaints at all. They treated us OK. They are a really good company. I could not be more pleased at the way things have turned out here. I also thought that the pricing was pretty fair as well. Yes, I would recommend them.
