- We called Thorson's thinking that our furnace needed repairs. They've done a good job with small fixes in the past. However our furnace was over 25 years old and we've expected it to die. This time our heat exchanger was cracked, so there was no more fixing. It was late in the day on Friday, so they brought us several space heaters and we talked about starting a replacement project first thing on Monday morning.
Everything went smoothly. The furnace was installed and turned on by the end of the day on Monday. By Tuesday, the job was complete. They not only did the installation quickly and expertly, but they cleaned up after themselves, leaving the furnace area as clean, if not cleaner than it started.
We're impressed with this third-generation family business. They take good care of their customers. We can't recommend them enough!
Some time later, I checked outside to see if she was still here, and she was - still working on the exterior AC unit even though she said it would only take a few minutes. She eventually left, and said that she would get me some cost information on a new furnace (which I had asked for), and would also give me the Angie's List $5 discount.
When I got the bill, I noticed a $60 additional charge for labor. I've had other furnace / AC work done over the last few years, and they always seem to get the job done in their 'minimum' job time. I called Thorson to ask about it; spoke to Mr. Thorson and he said he would check into it. I called him a few days later & was informed that "she probably did some other work."
When I paid the bill, I again asked that the extra $60 labor fee be explained, and also asked that information be sent to me about new furnace options. It's been over a month, and I've heard nothing from them.
My problem with this bill is that I feel that I've been billed $1 per minute for her to do things that I could have easily done myself. I think that she fixed the loose connection and also sprayed the exterior unit clean. That's great, but I didn't ask for that to be done, as I could do it myself. When chatting with her, I'd mentioned that I was an avionics troubleshooter on helicopters, so she must have been aware of my capabilities.
My summary is that that if she had performed these minor fixes quickly and free, I would have been singing the praises of Thorson Heating & Air Conditioning. Instead, I feel that I paid a lot for some simple fixes that I could have done myself, and I am disappointed in their lack of communication (which seems 'extra' strange since they know they'll see a rating on Angie's List).
"Thanks for your response (removed member name), but I’m sorry to hear you’re unhappy. I do believe this is all a miscommunication. Rob had left a message about scheduling an estimate, we had not heard back so we figured you had changed your mind about having an estimate done. It really is of your benefit to install a furnace this year because of the energy rebates, no matter who you have install it. As for the work done on your air conditioner, you were only billed for the time it took for the work to be completed. Since your call was the air conditioner not working, I first had to diagnose and fix the problem (replace the transformer) as well as fixing the exposed wiring outside before continuing to check the air conditioner. With our professional service I go above and beyond to make sure your air conditioner is working at its optimum efficiency. If I didn’t, I would get complaints that I was just there to fix it, but it still doesn’t work efficiently because the filters were dirty or the Freon was low. On average a service call would be checking the filter, washing off the outdoor unit, checking the Freon, etc to make sure it is running properly. The time allotted to do this does not include time to diagnose and replace parts for units not working. If we worked for free we would not be in business. I have no doubt as an avionic mechanic that you would have been able to fix the air conditioner yourself, but when you called us we have figured that you have chosen to have it professionally done."

She got the fuse replaced, checked out the rest of the system. Had to blow out a clogged drain hose. Also replaced the filter, checked freon levels, cleaned inside and outside units, etc.
She spent about a hour and a half total working on the unit.
It's Thursday night now, and all is still working great!
I would definitely call them again without hesitation!

Mr. Thorson quickly diagnosed the problem, came up with a creative solution (giving us time to save up for a new air conditioner and saving our carpet for this summer at least!) and was professional, helpful, and knowledgeable.
Mr. Thorson, not only called ahead to let me know when he would arrive, but he called the following day to see how things were going.
Our air conditioning is running much more efficiently, and as I understand it we can expect our heating to also improve with this cleaning of the coil.
I would highly recommend him and will definately use his services again.
