It was replaced. It took 4 hours. We were charged the same amount for installation as we had been charged the first time, 3 years prior. This was legal but it seemed wrong. We were sent a letter on their letterhead signed by their secretary and owner saying it was legal. I have all the documentation on file. By coincidence representatives from the City came to check our furnace as a new one was installed and saw the water heater had been installed and nobody had called to have the City inspect it as legally required. I told them that Hander installed it. The City called Hander and Hander representatives DENIED HAVING INSTALLED IT. They did not affix their company label, they wrote the date of installation in black marker on the water heater. However, we had the receipt and I had my letters of complaint and their letters of response with their secretary and owners signatures and I forwarded them to the City Inspectors. I was told that Hander was fined for not having the inspection done and my research on the Rheem parts that they use was very disappointing. (I apologize if I have the year of installation incorrect, it might have been 2016 and the price might have been $300)

Worst company I have ever dealt with and the problem is still unresolved. They sent an incompetent technician out who could not find the problem and had the nerve to send me a bill for $80. No one ever called me, so I had to call their office and explain nothing was done to fix the problem. They said they would send a more experience tech out, which took another two weeks. That Tech recommended a new water heater. I told them to go ahead and install. Almost two months later I am calling weekly to see when the water heater will be installed and told within several days. To them several days means two months. DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE!!!! THEY ARE HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hander Inc sent a technician very quickly to fix a broken pipe in our basement which has caused flooding.  We had never worked with Hander Inc before but they had an after hours emergency service we needed.   The great guy who came spent all day working, said he had fixed it, and left.  However, the next morning we had new standing water in the basement from the same pipe.  We called Hander Inc back that next morning and they sent someone else.  This person said the first guy had used the wrong type of glue.  The second guy resealed the joints  with a new type of glue and left, declaring the job fixed.  The next morning there was more new water standing in the basement.  We called Hander Inc again and they sent out a third guy.  This guy said that the second guy had mistakenly lifted the pipe too much when re-doing the glue and removed it from the seal.  The third guy placed the pipe back where it was supposed to be, said it was all fixed and left.     After this third correction there was no additional water leaking from that pipe.

Hander Inc sent a kind but incompetent man to run the gas lines in our home.  This man admitted to us after about 6 weeks into the job that he had never run gas lines in a home before.  We had continuous communication problems with this technician and the office where we kept being told the job was done when it was not.    Toward the end of the job, during an inspection, we found it did not pass the city gas codes and parts of the job had to be redone.  After complaining to the Hander Inc. managers about the slow speed, lack of capacity of the technician, and failure to meet city codes, another Hander Inc. Technician was sent to check the work.  We were informed by this person that due to lack of good staff, this is the way Hander Inc works:  They send lower skilled people first and only send out the more skilled technicians when complaints are lodged.  This second technician checked the work, and then turned on the gas, declaring everything satisfactory.  Unfortunately neither of these men found that one of the valves connecting a bend in a pipe had never been tightened.   That night my family, including two children under 5 years of age, slept in the house all night with a major GAS LEAK.   In the morning we noticed the whole house smelled of gas and, after removing the children, made an emergency call to a different company who came immediately.  This company was the one who found the valve so loose that it moved around with light touch of a finger.    There are no words for how we feel after this experience and the danger in which Hander Inc place us, and our small children.
Our total bill with them for the "work" was over $7,000.  At the time of writing this review we are still waiting for Hander Inc's response to our written complaint about the situation.  We intend to take legal action against them.

Excellent experience from the first moment I contacted the company!  Hander's representatives were always courteous, punctual and responsive.  They worked with me to schedule my appointment and completed their work quickly, cleanly and with clear descriptions of what they did and the current status of the equipment in my house upon which they worked.  I look forward to doing business with them again!

For the following reasons, I found Hander Plumbing to be overly expensive and unprofessional.

Hander Plumbing installed a kitchen faucet and attempted to clear our basement drain line. They did fine on the faucet. They noted that their work on the drain line was “not guaranteed” to clear it. They recommended a specific company which specializes in drain lines if the line was not clear. We found out soon thereafter that it was still clogged. The bill from Hander included two hours spent on clearing the drain lines, at their normal hourly rate of ~$80 per hour. This is what I took issue with. If Hander isn't an expert at clearing drain lines (which they essentially admitted when they recommended the other company), they shouldn’t be charging expert plumber rates to perform that service. I had to spend an additional $85 to get the drain lines cleared by the other company.

I called Hander to share my feelings on the bill and to see if they would be willing to negotiate. After hearing my concerns, they said they would need to contact the drain line company to confirm our story. After I didn’t hear back after a week, I called and they said they were still waiting. To make a long story short, I had to contact Hander numerous times over the next couple weeks as I did not hear back from them time and again. In our final conversation, our contact with the company noted they had received the information they needed from the drain line company but she needed to “consult with the project manager” and she would call me later that day. After two days without any contact, I sent an email noting that if I didn’t get a response, I would assume that they are not willing to negotiate on the bill. That was three weeks ago and I have not heard back. I would have preferred that they were proactive in addressing my concerns, and told me directly that they were not willing to negotiate on the bill.

Response from Hander, Inc. Plumbing & Heating

"The drain line mentioned in the post was the main line and, when cleared, was found to be packed full of tampons. Cleaning the drain did take longer than normal because the line was packed with tampons which were shown to the owners on site. The drain line was open and flowing when we left. The drain line did subsequently plug again after the fact and, at that time, our plumbers were all committed to other jobs. The call was referred to one of our subcontractors as they were able to provide faster service at the time. Due to the fact that the line was clogged with tampons, the billings were not negotiable. We cannot and do not guarantee drain lines to stay open and flowing for reasons that are beyond our control. In our opinion, items such as tampons should never be flushed."

When I called I was given a price quote. Then AFTER the work was finished they told me that they had to cut holes in the wall for vents. This was in a room that has a large doorway where the door is never closed. They added about $200 more to the price. Then I had to pay for an inspector to come look at the work. Another $20 for that and the guy wasn't even here a full minute.
Response from Hander, Inc. Plumbing & Heating

"When a water heater replacement is quoted, we always indicate that "combustion air" upgrades may be necessary and are not included in the quoted price as we do not know at the time what, if anything, will be required. The City of Sioux Falls inspectors have been enforcing minimum combustion are requirements for several years now. An "open door" is not considered adequate combustion air as the door is capable of being closed at any time which would restrict the air flow into the room the water heater is in. The simplest solution for combustion air is possible is to install transfer grilles through the wall as was done in this case, Another alternative is to pipe air in from outside which typically is much more costly. Last but not least, the inspection fee is determined by the City and is not negotiable. There is not a minimum time the inspector must be on site to warrant the cost of the inspection fee. I hope this sheds a little light on the combustion air and inspection fees noted in the original post. Thank you!"

Hander did it in 3-4 hours and, after years of a very slow drain, this
is working perfectly. They had to go up from the floor below. They
were done fast, charged the same as the estimate, and were so courteous and clean.
They recommended an excellent vendor for the drywall where they had gone
through the ceiling.

I told Karen at Hander what I wanted done. She said it was no problem and estimated it would cost about $90 for the job. I told he that was agreeable and to schedule it. On the day it was scheduled, I was traveling out of town. I contacted my wife, who had taken the day off to be at home when the work was to be performed, and she said they did not perform the work. Instead, the plumber (Lonnie) decided on his own that it would be better to turn the thermostat to140 degrees, charged us $70.00, and then left without performing the valve change. When I found out, I called Karen and asked her to review the work order to make sure I hadn't been vague with my request and hadn't stated anything about a lack of adequate temperature. She replied that it clearly read that the only thing requested was to change the valve and Lonnie would come back out and do it. Lonnie came back, started to work on the valve but then changed his mind, packed up and left without finishing. When he left, however, the valve was now leaking where it hadn't been before. I called their on-call service the next day when I got back in town and asked that someone be sent out to do the work as agreed (and paid for), just don't send Lonnie again. Instead, a few minutes later, I got a call from Lonnie. He said that the job appeared to be more than he was prepared for and when I said that a professional plumber should be able to handle a simple valve change, he got verbally abusive and eventually told me "if it's so easy, why didn't you just do it yourself?" I then contacted Karen at the the main office to let her know what happened, including Lonnie's lack of professionalism, the scalding thermostat setting, and the fact that I had water on my floor from a now-leaking valve. She said she would look into it and get back with me. I never got a response or refund and ended up having to stop payment on the check.

The work, for the most part, was satisfactory, though the technician had failed to complete a step with the stopper in one sink. I didn't bother to call them back (my husband fixed it). The technician who did our work was quite rude and carried the impression that when he arrived late in the afternoon, he was really doing me a favor. Then, the cost was exorbitant for the time he actually spent here. Here's the real kicker...this guy took our old garbage disposal (which worked perfectly fine--it just no longer fit under our sink). I believe he should have asked if we wanted him to take it at least. If he asked me whether he should take it away, I honestly do not recall it. Besides, he did the majority of the work while I was at work, so it is not likely that was ever talked about. We could have given it to a friend or family member, after all. When I hear the ad "Put a Hander on it", all I can think is....Ha! Never again! Unless you want rudeness, overpriced work, and mediocre quality. I'll stick with Frisbee.
Response from Hander, Inc. Plumbing & Heating

"There has been a 14+ month lapse between the time the work was completed and this report being filed. As always, it is much simpler to address and concerns, good or bad, promptly while the facts are still clear in everyone's mind. I visited with the tech who was on site and, to the best of his recollection over a year later, any issues that did arise on site were discussed with the owners and/or the general contractor that was performing the counter top work. He did seem to remember that there were some issues with the readiness of the project for finish and/or the equipment supplied by others; either of which were out of our control. We value any input from our customers and encourage them to provide feedback in a timely manner whether that feedback is positive or negative. Such feedback allows us the opportunity to be responsive to our customers needs. We always strive for complete customer satisfaction of the work we do and anything less than that leaves room for improvement. Thank you for this delayed input. We appreciate your concerns and hope that we will have an opportunity in the future to better serve you."

We discovered that our water heater was leaking late in the afternoon. Since it wasn't leaking too badly yet, we made an appointment for the next morning. We also had several other "little jobs" around the house that needed to be done, so we asked the scheduler to play to have the plumber work on them too while he was there. He arrived a little later than planned, but quickly got to work replacing the water heater. He also fixed a corroded clothes washer connection and put a new drain in one tub. The plumber finished the work in just a few hours and even allowed my husband to put in his own vents in the utility room, which will allow us to meet a city code that has been changed in recent years. They billed us for less than they quoted us for just the water heater alone under the phone.

We called the day before, said they would be here at 8am the next morning. They were:) Looked at the sink, wall, and areas around the bathroom to get an easy route to the pipe. Fixed the problem in a timely fashion. Thanks for all you have done on the day before Christmas eve:)]

We came home late from vacation to a broken and draining water heater, flooding the basement. The next morning, we contacted several plumbers - deciding on Hander based on the professionalism of the conversation with the estimater. Hander was neither the cheapest or the most expensive estimate. The installer was prompt and able to instill the new water heater within a few hours (same day). I appreciate his noticing that we had several shelving units on blocks due to a basement that gets water during siginificant rainfall. He suggested we put the new water heater all on blocks to prevent corrosion on the bottom of the unit - and saving us certain issues in the near future. The only downside to the experience is that we failed inspection due to the size of the room in the basement that houses the water heater. A 100 year old house is apparently not grandfathered, and I am forced to put a vent near the floor to all additional airflow. Even the inspector thinks it is a BS code, but there is nothing he could do. To resolve it, it is a simple vent in the wall. Is it Hander's fault? Basically, but it is not due to plumbing, it is due to a weird city code. I will get it easily fixed, and it will be fine. I loved the price, response time, and the suggestion to put the unit off the floor to keep it from the (sometimes) wet basement floor.
