Our total bill with them for the "work" was over $7,000. At the time of writing this review we are still waiting for Hander Inc's response to our written complaint about the situation. We intend to take legal action against them.
For the following reasons, I found Hander Plumbing to be overly expensive and unprofessional.
Hander Plumbing installed a kitchen faucet and attempted to clear our basement drain line. They did fine on the faucet. They noted that their work on the drain line was “not guaranteed” to clear it. They recommended a specific company which specializes in drain lines if the line was not clear. We found out soon thereafter that it was still clogged. The bill from Hander included two hours spent on clearing the drain lines, at their normal hourly rate of ~$80 per hour. This is what I took issue with. If Hander isn't an expert at clearing drain lines (which they essentially admitted when they recommended the other company), they shouldn’t be charging expert plumber rates to perform that service. I had to spend an additional $85 to get the drain lines cleared by the other company.
I called Hander to share my feelings on the bill and to see if they would be willing to negotiate. After hearing my concerns, they said they would need to contact the drain line company to confirm our story. After I didn’t hear back after a week, I called and they said they were still waiting. To make a long story short, I had to contact Hander numerous times over the next couple weeks as I did not hear back from them time and again. In our final conversation, our contact with the company noted they had received the information they needed from the drain line company but she needed to “consult with the project manager” and she would call me later that day. After two days without any contact, I sent an email noting that if I didn’t get a response, I would assume that they are not willing to negotiate on the bill. That was three weeks ago and I have not heard back. I would have preferred that they were proactive in addressing my concerns, and told me directly that they were not willing to negotiate on the bill.
"The drain line mentioned in the post was the main line and, when cleared, was found to be packed full of tampons. Cleaning the drain did take longer than normal because the line was packed with tampons which were shown to the owners on site. The drain line was open and flowing when we left. The drain line did subsequently plug again after the fact and, at that time, our plumbers were all committed to other jobs. The call was referred to one of our subcontractors as they were able to provide faster service at the time. Due to the fact that the line was clogged with tampons, the billings were not negotiable. We cannot and do not guarantee drain lines to stay open and flowing for reasons that are beyond our control. In our opinion, items such as tampons should never be flushed."
"When a water heater replacement is quoted, we always indicate that "combustion air" upgrades may be necessary and are not included in the quoted price as we do not know at the time what, if anything, will be required. The City of Sioux Falls inspectors have been enforcing minimum combustion are requirements for several years now. An "open door" is not considered adequate combustion air as the door is capable of being closed at any time which would restrict the air flow into the room the water heater is in. The simplest solution for combustion air is possible is to install transfer grilles through the wall as was done in this case, Another alternative is to pipe air in from outside which typically is much more costly. Last but not least, the inspection fee is determined by the City and is not negotiable. There is not a minimum time the inspector must be on site to warrant the cost of the inspection fee. I hope this sheds a little light on the combustion air and inspection fees noted in the original post. Thank you!"
is working perfectly. They had to go up from the floor below. They
were done fast, charged the same as the estimate, and were so courteous and clean.
They recommended an excellent vendor for the drywall where they had gone
through the ceiling.
"There has been a 14+ month lapse between the time the work was completed and this report being filed. As always, it is much simpler to address and concerns, good or bad, promptly while the facts are still clear in everyone's mind. I visited with the tech who was on site and, to the best of his recollection over a year later, any issues that did arise on site were discussed with the owners and/or the general contractor that was performing the counter top work. He did seem to remember that there were some issues with the readiness of the project for finish and/or the equipment supplied by others; either of which were out of our control. We value any input from our customers and encourage them to provide feedback in a timely manner whether that feedback is positive or negative. Such feedback allows us the opportunity to be responsive to our customers needs. We always strive for complete customer satisfaction of the work we do and anything less than that leaves room for improvement. Thank you for this delayed input. We appreciate your concerns and hope that we will have an opportunity in the future to better serve you."
