past few years, and feel like we made a great decision to go with American Exteriors when we finally couldn’t take another winter of leaky, inefficient windows.
When we met with the salesman, he stepped us through all of our options. Similar to others, the special offer we received was only good for that night, but that didn't bother us much as we were ready to purchase.
The process was seamless and went much quicker than we anticipated. We are impressed that it took less than a month from the first visit to the finished install. Not bad for a house full of odd sizes and custom requests!
From the salesman to the installers, everyone we worked with along the way were professional and personable. We appreciate how everyone we talked to answered our (at times, numerous) questions and walked us through the process so we knew what to expect. Thanks to their advice and expertise, we felt confident we were making the right choices for our home. Also, the installation crew did a good job cleaning up so we were able to enjoy our refreshed home as soon as the furniture was moved back. It was snowing during our installation, so after the snow melted we did find some small white pieces of paper in our yard, but that did not take more than 10 minutes to clean up.
Best of all, we love our new windows. The finished result is beautiful and we loved being able to customize our look and match the style and character of our home. And we are so excited over the increased warmth we’re enjoying in our family room – no more drafts! We can’t wait to see how much we save on our energy bill.
The entire process was a great experience. We are already recommending American Exteriors to our friends and
colleagues!
The initial installation, in late March, was punctual and done in a timely manner, however, the installer broke two windows before they got to our house. He was very apologetic, said this had never happened to him before, and seemed genuine, so we believed him. We were somewhat dismayed to find that, though the salesman had made vague reference to the install including sills and frame, all this apparently meant was that the new window was sealed in place with a vinyl sill covering the existing sill. In the case of one window in our home, this is somewhat concerning because the sill under the sealed covering was rotting and open to the outside. The installer insisted it was fine because it's sealed in, but it would have been better if this had been clear before we had to question the installer.
The initial install was complete in a single day, which was nice, outside of the two windows that were missing panes due to the breakage. We were pleased that the installer said he had already re-ordered the two broken windows, and that he'd be back in three weeks or so with the replacements.
Six weeks later, after we prompted the supposed project manger, the replacements were scheduled for install. The kitchen window replacement was complete, and the installer did replace the basement window but when he was done, brought me down to show me two flaws in the main pane. He said he wasn't satisfied with that so he would call in a replacement, and be back in three weeks. Again, I thought this was very professional and he was quite punctual for this install as well, but I was beginning to doubt the quality of these windows.
Again six weeks passed, and again we had to contact the project manager to get the replacement scheduled. The installer was out a third time, and carefully replaced the window a second time. This time my husband was present for the install. Again, when the install was complete, the installer brought my husband down to see a flaw in the interior of the main pane, and again he reported that he would have it replaced. My husband asked if this was common and the installer said that hadn't been his experience with this company in the past but we were the third house this year he was having to do multiple replacements due to flaws in the glass.
Eight weeks passed, and again we had to prompt the project manager to get the replacement scheduled. The project manager seemed to have changed in this time, not that it mattered since neither project manager was proactive about contacting us and getting the replacements installed. On the day of this install, at the time the installer should have been arriving for the install, the project manager called and apologized. She hadn't realized the installer had actually been booked to a siding job for the same day, and rescheduled for a week later. The project manager later sent us a $25 Visa gift card, but as we were on window number 4 for this same window with little communication from the project manager in between installs, we were not impressed.
Finally the replacement arrived a week later, with a different installer than we had seen before. He installed the replacement but unfortunately also broke one of the two panes in the center section of the window, so a replacement was again ordered. SIx weeks later, again following our prompting, the project manager scheduled the install. Fifth time was the charm I guess as this window was finally installed in October.
As far as quality goes, we still have some concerns. Though the windows themselves are clearly much better than the ones we had before (30-some years old), they have some interesting quirks upon opening and closing, which I would not have expected from brand new windows. The vertically hung ones have to be closed and quot;just soand quot; in order for the latches to actually latch. In the bedrooms this is somewhat frustrating but OK, the kitchen window I cannot close properly for the life of me, although my husband can get it. The horizontal sliders are somewhat better, but one side of the main window in the living room is very sticky and makes a frightening noise upon opening. Even these close with some persnickety-ness - you have to get them just right to get them all the way closed and the latches to line up properly.
Overall, I'm not that impressed and would not recommend them to others. The main reason I would not recommend them are as follows:
- High pressure sales pitch
- Questionable product quality - although the windows seem excellent, the latches are concerning.
- No communication from the project management unless we reached out to them.
- 6 months to complete a 7 window install due to flaws and breakages - raising questions as to quality again.
