Our dog is a black lab/german shorthair pointer/border collie cross. She is our bird dog during pheasant season. She is an indoor dog.
She gets long hair around her neck due to the border collie in her and she gets pretty hot in the summer. Therefore, we decided to have her groomed.
We made an appointment and took her to the clinic. We picked her up several hours later after we got off of work. I will say that she looked pretty good, but they sedated her to cut her hair and trim her nails. When we picked her up she was still groggy and acting strange. We were never informed that she was going to be sedated. i was very disappointed, as our dog is well behaved and there was no need to put her under to cut her hair and nails! If I would have known this was the procedure I would have taken her elsewhere or just done it myself.
Most recently....
This last hunting season in December my husband was out with the dog hunting. The dog was at a run and didn't quite duck far enough under a barbed wire fence and got cut up pretty bad. They were basically out in the middle of nowhere 30+ minutes from town and the dog was losing a lot of blood. There was a piece of the dogs ear hanging on by just a small piece of flesh and she cut up her back and head and had a very deep gouge on her ear where it attaches to her head. My husband got the bleeding under control eventually, but knew something would have to be done with the ear and wasn't sure if she would need antibiotics or not since the injury was from barbed wire. He called Norma Headlee and asked her what he should do. She told him exactly this "I'm busy. This is a small town and we can't serve everyone." My husband told her it was fine if she was busy and unable to help but then asked her if she could lead him in the right direction as to what to do. She said "You're going to have to take her to Rapid or Pierre (both 80+ miles away) where enough people chose to live where there are enough vets." (another exact quote). She was VERY rude to say the least.
We tried contacting several other veterinarians with no luck. My husband eventually got ahold of a family friend. She instructed us on what to do. We stopped at a local bottle & vet supply shop and got what we needed. It was very traumatic, but I had to hold the dog while my husband cut the part of her ear off that was dangling and unable to be reattached. Then we had to apply peroxide, salve, and a dressing not only to her ear but to several of her wounds.
It was just very disheartening to be in such a situation and finally get a hold of someone and then have them tell you they don't care.
Our dog has a chunk of her ear missing, but she is healed up and doing just fine now, with no thanks to the Philip Veterinary Clinic (aka Headlee Enterprizes).
