This is a handicapped accessible home. No member of our family had ever experienced the building of a home, much less had to make decisions that would affect the needs of someone who had mobility issues. Steve worked with my parents in the design phase, showing a great deal of patience as my parents changed their minds many times during the process. The designer did a really nice job in guiding my mother and sister through the selection of materials and finishes for the interior of the house. As construction got underway and the rest of us had a chance to see the floorplans, we observed some needed changes that would better suit the functionality of the home for our parents and our sister who lived with them (these needs had not been expressed to Steve during the design process). As we expressed our concerns, the necessary changes were made within the footprint of the home. Working with Steve and Gary was a delight; their understanding, ability to maintain a sense of humor, willingness to put up with Dad's impatience (when he was done with his therapy, he was anxious to be out of the nursing home) and the ease in communicating with them during the build process made this a home building experience that most Americans only dream about. Though we had encouraged our parents to talk to Steve about building a house earlier, when we did get the decision made it was only 6½ months from design to move in date. In a South Dakota winter that is very efficient with other jobs on their plate as well.
