Job started in August, ended a month over estimated end date. This was largely due to poor communication between contractor and sub contracting companies, resulting in avoidable multiple visits. Often we were not told who, or if, someone would be working that day. There were too many days of no work. Some days, we'd just have to 'wait and see' who or if someone was coming.

The walls were not prepped before painting. One wall/section unpainted (contractor painted later). Painters painted over bubbles (contractor fixed later.)
UPDATE 3.8.14:CEILING WILL NEED RE-PAINT, ESPECIALLY WHERE CABINETS ARE SEPARATING FROM CEILING. WILL NEED PROFESSIONAL TO DO AS SEPARATION GAPS NEEDS FILLING. WE'LL ALSO NEED IT DETERMINED, BY A PROFESSIONAL, IF THIS SEPARATION  OF CABINETS FROM CEILING, IS POTENTIALLY A BIGGER PROBLEM DOWN THE ROAD. ALSO NEED TO CLEAN PAINT OFF NEW CEILING LIGHT MOUNT THAT HAS  SPLATTERS AND OVER RUN.

Plumbers had to make more visits than necessary because preparation was not complete for them to continue. Electricians rec'd conflicting or no instructions some days. The contractor was always available by phone; but, his presence could have moved things along more quickly (and smoothly). as well as provide inspections between jobs...rather than calling to ask 'how it went/looks'.

The cabinets installation went quickly  and we did appreciate contractor delayed his vacation to do so.
UPDATE: 3.8.14 CABINETS SEPARATING FROM CEILING.

Used black screws to install white (inside wood) cabinets. We were given a strip of 20 white 'FastCaps' for cover screw heads.
UPDATE 3.8.14: NEED TOUCH-UP PAINT BECAUSE FASTCAPS FALL OFF AND THE BRADS USED TO NAIL TRIM ON CABINETS DETRACT FROM HARMONY/BEAUTY OF CABINETS. THERE'S SO MANY BRAD HEADS, THEY ARE SPACED SO UNEVEN THEY TOO DETRACT FROM CABINETS. SOME NEED TO BE HIT AGAIN TO MAKE FLUSH.

Back splash tiles are glass (wife/designer recommended but at installation, contractor said he doesn't recommend.)
SHOULD HAVE USED GLASS CUTTER.   WHERE BACKSPLASH ENDS, THE TILES ARE 'CUT' SO EVENLY, IT'S MORE LIKE 'BROKEN' TO FIT. MORE CAREFUL USE OF GROUT COULD HAVE PROVIDED A MORE EVEN ENDING.
The tile design was not what we chose  (SUPPLIER'S ERROR BUT DO LOOK BETTER THAN THE DESIGN I HAD CHOSEN.).  SOME CRACKED TILES IMPOSSIBLE TO CLEAN OUT WHITE GROUT, SO YOU CAN SEE TOO MANY BROWN TILES WITH WHITE LINES OF GROUT. WE HAD A PROFESSIONAL COME IN TO SEAL GROUT, SO REPLACEMENT OF CRACKED TILES AND HAVING THE ENDS CUT W/GLASS CUTTER OUR LIKELY OPTION NOW.

We were quoted a price of $37K but  were presented with sample choices that were over the budget. Didn't know until after choice was made sometimes.  Floor, cabinets and counter tops were 'over budgeted' items.  We should have been given sample choices within our budget and informed if we were expressing interest in items that were NOT within budget. There are some items we would have chosen, despite increased cost (floor is PERFECT for us), so it's not the choices we regret, it's the opportunity to MAKE the choice ourselves.
When we asked for update on costs, contractor didn't have information, so we requested meeting SPECIFICALLY to discuss the updated status of costs. At this meeting, contractor did not have paperwork or information, he was in a hurry and we were not able to settle anything, other than the fact, we were over budget. Confusion about add'l water heater vs. 'hot water timer' cost, I finally  had to call plumber directly to get information.
The kitchen is beautiful, but there's finishing touches that we still have to do that we believed the $40K should have paid for. We bought our own appliances and fixtures (lighting, fans, etc.).
IT'S BEEN 6+MONTHS SINCE JOB FINISHED AND WE DO ENJOY OUR 'NEW' KITCHEN. RATHER THAN OBSESS ABOUT THE PROBLEMS, WE'RE GRATEFUL FOR LESSONS LEARNED.
