Veterinarians,

About us

Hillbrook Veterinary Clinic is a small animal practice. We are committed to providing quality veterinary care for the life of your pet. Our services and facilities are designed to assist in routine preventive care for healthy pets; early detection and treatment of disease as your pet ages; and medical and surgical care as needed during his or her lifetime. We understand the special role your pet plays in people’s lives and are dedicated to becoming your partner in your pet's health care. We treat your pet as we would our own. Our goal is to practice the highest quality compassionate medicine and surgery. While most of our patients consist of dogs and cats, we also see a variety of other small animals. Some of these other patients include hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, rats, mice, chinchillas, rabbits, turtles, lizards and snakes.

Dr. Shelbourne is one of those very rare vets who is in private practice. He is located on the east side of Spartanburg in a small strip mall. When I say private practice, I mean there is no receptionist or vet tech to help. So when you call to get an appointment, you will get him on the phone. He does the surgeries by himself, closing the office. Most of the time my dogs were the only patients, which is a little different.
He appears to be very knowledgeable about animals and I felt that my dogs got good care. However, being so small, the selection of pet care products (such as) heart worm preventative is limited, and there is a surcharge if you want to charge your service on your credit card.
There don't seem to be files for patients, which is a little unusual.

Dr. Shelburne is a great, non-nonsense vet. He takes the necessary time to treat each dog, but he doesn't waste time either. He is punctual, and has always made time to see our three dogs (even when something has come up at the last minute). He is thorough, but doesn't run a lot of extra tests to jack up the price. I am very pleased that he is taking care of our dogs - they are like family, and I wouldn't want just anyone taking care of them. The last time we were in, the pup had a reaction to the kennel cough mist, and her eyes became very swollen after we got home. My husband called Dr. Shelburne and asked what we should do. He recommended that we try something at home before bringing her in again. That probably saved us a lot of $$! If he had been interested in making money, he would have told us to bring her in - but he was more concerned about us and the pup. Great vet!

My dog has had excessive skin problems and I wanted to have him checked for possible underlying causes. An antibiotic was prescribed for the skin infection. Dr. Shelburne was very good with handling my nervous dog and taking time with us. Results from tests came back fairly quickly as well.

I have been taking my three dogs to Dr. John Shelburne, who is the proprietor of Hillbrook Veterinary Clinic, for several years. During that time he has treated my crew for all manner of issues aside from the "routine" shots/exams.....He is a very compassionate, patient and direct person that I can count on to give my animals the care they deserve. He is also very upfront about everything and will always give the "bottom line" regarding treatments/care for your pet. He is a friend to both you and your pets.

Only the vet works there, no receptionist. It's not busy though, so there was no waiting. The cat didn't really like the vet. She was hissing and trying to bite, oops. The vet was thorough, but could have been a little gentler. The cat is usually fine around other vets. I'd recommend, but bedside manner is on the rough side. The facility seemed pretty new. No credit cards accepted though last time I was there. Price was a little higher than I expected. I have been there before and it's nice not having to wait in line. He diagnosed an abscess tooth on this cat previously and gave us pills that cleared it right up. If you don't mind not having a chatty doctor, he is very capable.
