This is a complaint against Charleston Area Rental Homes. I rented a home from them for 3 years and moved out in November 2007, after buying my 1st home...I had a good inspection report from the representative, Ken Smith, (which in the move I lost). When approximately 50 days had passed well beyond the 30 days they had by law, I requested by phone, then letter, my deposit back. I received another letter from CARH stating that I wouldn't be getting my deposit back with a list of further damages I had done to the house which were untrue. Threatening to bill me for any amount over the deposit. Of course I never got a bill, since I didn't pursue a law suit. I consulted an attorney, and though by law, I'm in the right and have a case, it wouldn't stop CARH from counter suing, thereby costing me legal fees far beyond any settlement that I may be awarded and that I don't have the resources to pay. I'm not sure how many times your service is used before a renter leases from an agency, but figured it couldn't hurt to cover this base as well.
