I had three bathrooms and a kitchen backsplash done. All of them have issues. In my opinion I would not choose Bob Gray tile. He was the most expensive of the bids and did not even come close to the quality you would expect. Worse part is that when things got difficult he just quit and didn't want to try and fix the issues. Now I'm stuck finding a new tile installer.
"I notice there are no pictures of the showers and backsplash. Mr. [Member Name Removed] also didn't mention the $4,733.75 that he didn't pay, or that this is a tract built house that doesn't have a square or flat wall in it. A look at the pictures showing the entire project would show the true story. I also agreed to fix a small area in one shower, but Mr [Member Name Removed] wanted the entire shower replaced"
our kitchen floor tile and back splash 8 years ago when we bought our
track home. We made the mistake of letting our builder, Ryland
Homes,
install the master bath floor tile at that time. We were never happy
with the installation or the quality of the builder's tile, as it was
very slippery when it got wet. Bob's experienced, and "better paid"
crew of professional tile installers came in in March of this year, and
not only installed a more "slip resistant" tile that we had picked out,
but they did it with a much smaller grout line, using a better quality
of grout. Bob's installers made our new tile "look raised" from the
thin grout lines, whereas another installer we used on or second
bathroom floor tile replacement made the grout more level with the
tile. That poor quality job makes our second bathroom floor look like
one big piece of "melted in pizza". Bob's installation looks so much
more professional, we now wish that we had called Bob rather than trying
to save a few bucks! That same poor installer on our second bathroom
floor tile kept threatening to retire, and we hope he did, for every
one's sake. But before he retired he gave us a quote on doing our
master bathroom floor tile, which turned out to be a couple of hundred
dollars less than what we most willingly paid Bob to do the master
bathroom floor tile. In this case, and maybe not with all contractors,
we certainly got what we paid for. Not only does Bob's job look
professional, but is installers put up plastic drop cloths that kept the
rest of our master bathroom cleaner, while the other guy did not put up
any drop cloths. While no contractor can keep all the dust that
happens from spreading when tearing up old tile floors, Bob's crew
certainly did a better job of keeping the rest of our bathroom as clean
as possible, and then cleaning up properly at the end of their work.
The guy that we hope retired, actually put broken pieces of old tile in
our back yard right on top of the drain cover that takes the water off
our roof through the gutters an downspouts, and out into our back yard
away from our flower beds. We have enjoyed looking at Bob's beautiful
and professional mater bath floor tile job so much that we now have
contracted with him to do our fiberglass to tile and glass shower
remodeling. We have
such an element of trust with Bob now, after three tile jobs over eight
years, that when Bob told us upfront that he doesn't make any money on
the plumbing that needs to be done for shower remodeling, so he can only
give us a "range quote" on the entire job (excluding the glass doors
which we buy ourselves), that we trust his honesty and integrity that
what he tells us is true. This "trust factor" for my wife and I is the
most important aspect of contracting to have work done in our home.
We've had too many bad experiences to not think any other way. We know
that Bob feels the same way about the tile installers that he hires, as
he told us that he makes sure he pays them, competitively, a little
more, so that they don't go to another contractor. That way, he can
trust his installers to do the right thing even though he is not there
watching them do the entire job. He tells them what to do, and drops in
to make sure everything is going correctly to his high standards. He
trusts his installers, and so do we. While Bob's labor charge may be a
little higher because he pays his installers more than most other
contractors do, he tries to save his customers money by letting them
pick out and buy the tile themselves at one of his wholesale tile
sources, as we did. In the end, you save money over other contractors
that make money on the tile, as well as the labor. Just so you know, I
am not a relative of Bob's, or a long time old friend that knew him
before he did our kitchen floor tile (so this review is "NO BULL!", but I
consider him a trusted contractor now, because if anything ever did go
wrong with any of his installation work, he makes it his first priority
to take care and follow up on his current "completed job" customers,
before he makes more appointments with new customers. For that reason,
he is sometime hard to pin down initially, and he'll sometimes have to
call you and say that he'll be late for a new job quote. Thank God, we
found a contractor with good communication skills, though. Bob texts,
emails, and calls, while keeping up with technology by using an online
calendar for everything in his smart phone.
